So today i was switching my wheels over and i have been hearing a thud thud thud thud thud while i drive, at all times, breaking, cornering, accelerating, etc. So while i was changing the wheels and i had the car jacked up, i checked the cv boot. I also did the wheel bearing test where you pull and push on the tire to see if it is loose. Well, when i got to the rear passenger size i saw this.(the picture) I saw some grease but everything was not covered it was kind of scattered spray. Am i missing the clamp? Is the boot bad? Would this be the cause of the thud sound? Please help me out? I searched a bit and it seems like wheel bearings is mainly when cornering and going over speed bumps. I also heard that when you have a bad cv its more of a clicking. Please help me.
Your missing the clamp for what ever reason. You can buy a universal cv boot clamp at a parts store, but a really big zip-tie works just as well, and you prolly got some kicking around the house.
This how ever isn't causing your thud noise. That is most likely ball joints or TREs. Possibly a loose wheel.
Unless all of the axle grease came out of that boot and the CV joint is smoked.
Like mentioned, I would check ball joints and tre. My car was making several thud sounds, until I replaced the control arms in the front. I get a popping sound now, mainly due to a tre I didnt replace b/c the jam nut is seized. CV makes a clicking noise, Ive got the same problem.
Have you checked your wheel bearings? its sounds like whomp whomp whomp whomp whomp? yes/no?
jack the car and try and turn your wheels with your hands (steering lock will need to be engaged for the fronts).. see if there is any movement in all 4 wheels.
it was raining as well so if thats not the noise you are talking about we will need a clearer video.
The noise i am talking about was from :25-:30 ish, it may sound like a whomp whomp, i am no good with spelling sounds/ describing what they sound like. I have jacked that car up multiply times and tried the wobble test, is that what you are talking about? Or are you trying to say spin the tires as if the car was moving?
Good luck man. As far as your CV boot goes, the boot itself is fine. As mentioned above, the clamp came off, happened to me too. It COULD behoove you (if you have a grease gun with a needle attachment) to slide a needle under the end of the boot and bump some more grease in there (be sure you get the right kind) before sealing it back up, just to ensure you have enough.

I've got a similar thing going on with my 98 A4 Avant. I believe it is a rear wheel bearing. What did you find was wrong?
I also have the same thing going on with the rear outer CV joint boot, in that it is missing the metal band that goes around the inner side of the outer boot.
