Is this piston salvageable with new rings, or should I replace the whole piston?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Background: some time ago I melted a spark plug and ate some spark plug ceramic (chicken/egg?). The cause is still not fully determined.

Tiny bit of the lower compression ring missing.

Foreign object damage to skirts in three different places around the piston.

The ring grooves are bent from previous "timing belt failure" events. The top groove is compressed down in two places, making the top ring "stick" a little, as opposed to moving freely in the groove. You can see some of the deformed ring groove in these two pictures.

These ring grooves are what I'm mostly concerned with and the reason I think I should buy a new piston. If the rings didn't stick in the grooves, I'd probably just go with new rings. What do you think?

Replace the whole piston for sure. That thing is done.

Will you need to re-hone your cylinder bores? It would probably be best to replace the piston with a new one, and re-hone it if there is wall damage.

surprisingly, the cyl seems fine. I'll be doing a light hone for sure.

Thanks for the offer, really, but I'll be replacing this with another weisco forged piston.

I would reuse it, but only if there wasn't that damage on the ringland. the piston rings have to be able to spin freely. it's bad news bears when they stay in one spot.

I would definitely just get a new one for cheap insurance

New pistons fr sure, thats cooked. If you are going with aftermarket pistons I would do a slightly larger bore as well.

This is a joke, right? Throw that shiznit away. It would be insane to take her apart only to put some slag like that back in....and probably do it all again in short order.

Since the plug damaging event, there has been no further evidence that there is continuing malfunction in that cylinder, right? Has the replacement plug continued to look normal?

I haven't been driving it. I have also replaced the head with a rebuilt AEB head in the meantime.

A rod/piston makes a sweet business card holder, I'm using one in my office.
