    s4 vs m3

My buddy just bought an 04 M3 with stage 3 dinon software, and full exhaust with headers. He says its 340 at the wheels, but i think its somewhere in the 300 range.
I drive an 00 APR Stage 2 S4 and probably putting around 270whp.

So we decided to go for a couple runs in 2nd gear :) and i definitely thought he was gonna pull on me.
Guess what? We were completely even, our heads turned at each other the entire time, smiling and then not realizing we both hit the rev limit!
I guess we were too excited.. lol

So what do you guys think? :)

APR is weaksauce. Something is not right.

I had a stock 02 M3 imola red and LOVED IT! Payments were a bit redic so I ended up parting with her.. but I'm back in the S now and loving it.
It's not a matter of if but when I end up with more cash I'll definitely be getting into another M3. They are incredible machines. First thing anyone says
when you lift the hood.. "HOLY SHIT, INDEPENDENT THROTTLE BODYS??" and a full stainless exhaust to boot. My old chipped APR S4 would have taken it though
but the M3 being rwd = more fun :)

Nice run! Impressive pull against the M3. I'm not suprised as HP only tells half the story. The S4 has a lot more torque and racing has a lot more factors then just power. I've beat cars in my A4 that should have smoked an S4.. Its all about the driver, etc.. Anyways good run, congrats on going head to head with the M3. Now put some tials in that car and smoke everything lol

Never said that it wasn't "plenty fast." But against a Dinan M3 with full exhaust... ugh, I'm sick of these threads.

A Dinan M3 is a bolt on N/A straight 6. Your limited to how much power you can squeze out of an Naturally Aspirated 6 cylinder. Small displacement. It may make 340whp but might not make anywhere near that in tq. More than likely mid 200's tops. The S4 will make more torque than hp...

I agree. However, once you factor in power to weight ratios (M3 is 2865lbs., S4 is 3600lbs), the difference in actual power numbers and how much the S4 loses through Quattro, and how APR isn't the most aggressive tune out there... Well, if I could pick one to win a race, it would be the M3. To each his own though

[QUOTE=Manny;6769790]What are you talking about? APR is plenty fast..

APR is a joke compared to the other stage 3 files out there. I'm pretty sure that's what RedB5S4 is getting at. Back when I was stage II, I ran almost every OTC file at some point (GIAC, AMS, MTM, APR, etc.). Don't get me wrong, APR is safe and smooth power, but GIAC and AMS were on another level. All cars work differently with tunes and for all I know you have a fast APR tune. I just remember there being a substantial difference. It's worth trying out a GIAC file if you can pick one up cheap, just a suggestion. If you kept with this guy with APR, you'll be faster with GIAC.

Unless this was an E30 which it isn't then they are def not 2865lbs, E46's are at least 3200-3300lbs

Woops you're right. Quick google search shows them right around what you said. Not sure how I came up with that other number.

Thank you. Critical typo on my part. Although, it probably works for stage 3 as well. I've never driven or been in an APR Stage 3 car, but from what I understand the OTC tune is still on the conservative side compared to others, correct?

Yep, that's all I was saying. I mean, I guess that an APR S4 could hang with a Dinan M3? It just seems a bit off to me. If an APR was neck and neck with one though, pretty much any other tune would pull on that same car (maybe with the exception of MTM).

Uhhhm, wat. Maybe an E30 M3 weighs that much.

E46s are fairly heavy for a coupe; they weigh around 3400-3500 pounds. An S4 only gives up like 200 pounds to an M3, has a much, much better torque curve and similar power numbers.

EDIT: Damn it, I'm slow today.

340 whp? your friend's seriously inflating those numbers. no full exhaust or tune is going to get you 65-70 whp, most dyno right around 270 stock. you were right about it being closer to 300.

the new v8 M3s are damn quick, i dare say they will give the run of the mill stage3 car a very hard time. But the V6s? lovely cars but without at least a supercharger, not a contender.
