Not sure how many know of this, but there is a DIY mechanic shop in Sterling, VA. It's practically right around the corner from my house and I figured I would try it out for an exhaust install on my allroad. My experience there was great. M-T 2 post lifts cost $18 an hour and they give you tools to use. Friday and Saturday it is $20 for a 2 post lift.
I have a garage to work in, but sometimes that is not enough for certain jobs. I was able to recruit a friend to help me out and off we went.
Getting started was relatively easy. Fill out a few papers saying if you get killed it is not on them. They give you a quick demo of the lift and how to operate it. And off you go!
A few pics from a relatively easy job
And with the job well done, we treated ourselves to a few beers at Sweetwater
The whole process took less than 2 hours and cost less than $50 (tax included). If you have protective glasses, bring them so you are not charged $2.50 (required to have/wear). We took probably more time for adjusting than anything else. I really dig this place an will be going back more often. Quick DIY oil changes, etc. They take the oil there. They even took my old exhaust I was going to scrap. Big thumbs up to these guys

Dude! You just saved me a ton of money for oil changes and all the installations I need to use a lift for.
Going to look into this in person this week.

Glad I could help out. Just trying to spread the word about this place. I would think in these hard economic times and huge $$$ hourly rates at most local shops here in NOVA, those who like to DIY will save yourself some $$$. It's a great deal. Especially on using a lift. I would have one if my garage would allow for it, but it doesn't. This is the next best thing. I know I will be a frequent customer

I knew this place existed but haven't been there yet. Nice to know how much it costs, thanks for that. I assume they help you load the car on a lift if you've never done it?
when i was stationed down at Quantico, i used to have guys from here come with me to the hobby shop on base... lift was only $4-$4.50/hour. tools provided also, no requirement for eye protection either.
did many a coilover install during my time in quantico. if you have a friend that is in the military, that is always another option for you guys...

This is great info! Do they have space to work if you don't require a lift? I've got a timing belt job coming up and it would be nice to do it in a garage instead of the parking lot of my apartment complex
Hmm, gotcha. I wouldn't mind paying for a lift and not using it, but I'd feel like a jerk taking up the time/space from someone who actually needed to lift their car lol
there's another one in the area. gotta ask sky where it is.
The other shop is literally down the road and around the corner. It's called Sports Car Shop, Inc and the website is www.Sportscarshopinc.com. Their rates are much better than that other place but you have to pay a monthly membership fee to use anything they have. They have a wheel mounter, balancer, paint spray booth, car wash area and obviously lifts. It's $20 a month for the membership and lifts are roughly $12 an hour after taxes. Membership includes use of all the tools, wheel mounter, balancer, car wash at no additional charge. The owner, Scott, is a real cool guy, he races spec Miata's and has some buddies that race spec Boxster's. He definitely knows his stuff and can answer any of your questions.

Awesome news. I rolled by the DIY shop the other day to check it out and yup, closed. Bummer. Glad this one is around though! Thanks for pointing that out
