Well... leaning it out will help and also one trick to helping pass is on the way there literally beat the shit out of the car. YOu have to make the cat as hot as possible (like glowing). The hotter it is the better the cat will work.

I'd have to go early on Sunday morning or something because I waited 20mins or so just to get the thing on the rollers. It also doesn't help that my cat is at the bottom of the downpipe. Harder to get it hot. I wonder if anyone in the area has an APR HFC...
Same thing happened to me hate to bite the bullet get a couple of cats put in. Got 2 high-load cats if you wanna toss them on for emissions. I gotta do the same thing in a month or so as well
Mixing in some E85 will help clean up the readings.
I was thinking about this for my own car since I have some power upgrades coming in the future. I'm probably gonna have to register my car in Park County once my cat comes out.
BT/BAT build threads make me happy I have a stock turbo
Im struggling with the same thing!! Mine was up there with the same numbers you've got Dolphin18T. (I think you actually commented on a post of mine a while back haha) If you give the E85 a try and it works let me know, or if i can find some time in the next few days I'll be the guinea pig haha.
Ive been in 3 times now and failed every one. Got better after getting a hole in my fmic piping fixed and getting the car super hot on the way over, but still couldnt pass. I bought a stock CAT from a guy off here and a friend will weld it on for me, but if it can be resolved with the E85 mix that would save the hassle...
High CO results from incomplete combustion of fuel and is emitted directly from vehicle tailpipes. Incomplete combustion is most likely to occur at low air-to-fuel ratios in the engine. These conditions are common during vehicle starting when air supply is restricted ("choked"), when cars are not tuned properly, and at altitude, where "thin" air effectively reduces the amount of oxygen available for combustion (except in cars that are designed or adjusted to compensate for altitude).
Of course high CO are directly related to A/F ratio. So leaning it out could help this... or putting higher octane in could help as well causing a more complete combustion.
Some things that could cause high CO are:
ECTS (engine temperature sensor)
leaky fuel injectors
improperly high fuel pressure
thermostat stuck open
clogged air filter
and the tune itself could be the major factor.

nice. i'll have to remember this as i will need to get mine done here soon to get colorado plates. thanks!
The place in Boulder wouldn't even test my car... said it was "too low." Went to the place in Broomfield and had no problems.
Anybody know about getting your car emission exempt? They say if you spend something like $740 in repairs to try to get it to pass you can have it inspected by somebody and have it exempt from testing. Although I'm guessing any modifications would quickly void this option, but maybe not??
in california you can go to a "ref" who checks the car out. You can mod the car but all of the parts that are visible mods need to have a "C.A.RB" sticker on it. which is California Air Resources Board. Companies like AEM and some other big names will pay to have their parts tested and passed under emissions.
Not sure if CO has something like this but I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Went and gave it a go today. Went in with a gallon of 91 and a gallon of E85. Lowered my numbers so I passed HC and CO, but still failed NOx by a full point (I was about 2.6xxx)
After (Running 1/2 91 and 1/2 E85)
HC: 1.0693
CO: 12.4479
CO2: 327. 5130
NOx: 2.5807
It says high NOx numbers come from high combustion temperatures/pressures...hmmmm.
Are you running a hi-flow cat? Also when was the last time you changed your plugs? If you have access to vag-com run the codes to see if you have a misfire.
i have a stock one if you want to throw it on... but if you can be first in line... beat hte shit out of the car and get it super hot. btw get on COD
COD = Black Ops?
If so... PS3?
What is everyone's usernames?
To the OP (or everyone) - I will need to get this done very soon as I'm already near the 90 day limit of when I have to switch my plates over to CO. Is there a shop that everyone suggests, or just go to any shop? I only have APR 1 so i doubt that will mess with anything?
Looking to trade/sell my JL Audio 500/1v2 amplifier - BRAND NEW still in box + wiring etc... for TT225 injectors

Not a hi-flow CAT, plugs were replaced 3 months ago, I had a local shop run the codes when the plugs were replaced, one misfire that was resolved. I havent gotten vag-com yet, maybe ill go back in and have them run the codes before a retest..

What do you think the penalty is for not doing it in time? I'm at about 5 months since I bought the car with Illinois plates -_-

You need to run some type of cat. We tried like crazy with my friends STI and we could not get a clean pass without one.
As for not registering the car you'll be fine as long as your tags arent expired. I know people who've been living here for years without registering in CO.

no it has a cat on it....just not hi-flow.
tags expired last month lol so im really trying to wrap this up.

Not sure exactly, probably a fine. Cop was grilling me about that during my accident (see my other thread) and said I needed to get it done, especially now that I'm "in the system".

Haha! Shit, we're both right there. Damnit NOx. We have 10 days (I've got 8) to figure this out for the free retest haha
That was my free retest. My next one will be $25 again...
I think i'm going to check for exhaust leaks and/or try a little more ethanol. Mine's sooooo close.... Amazing what some ethanol will do for CO and HC though, haha.
If you can pull some timing out of your maps for the lowish rpm they are testing you at then that should help out the nox. Generally backing full advance down about 5* will drastically effect nox. Just remember to add it back after the test and what it all was so you don't make stuff go boom by adding too much back..... I know this only from tuning and egt's. Hope that helps.
I do vehicle polishing at very reasonable rates. Call me at 970-978-0648
welll shiiiiit. got my NOx down from 2.5xxx to 2.0xxx from switching from a 91+E85 mix to a 87+E85 mix. so damn close! Anybody around the Boulder (or surrounding) area wanna pull codes for me?? Trade for a case of beer or something? I took it to the dealership in Boulder just to ask them to run diagnostics and they ended up charging me $55 and gave me NO info.....thanks alot....haha

Pulling codes is NOT gonna help with you failing emissions if you don't have a CEL (and even then I don't see it doing you much good)
holy fuuuuuck that is intense, can you go over everything you did to get it to pass? I'm gonna have the same problem when I reregister my car... so lame! right now its registered in virginia, and the tag expired a couple months ago so i just removed it haha. not gonna worry about it until i have to but would like to have some tips ready
