So, I wanted to work on the car today, not a whole lot that I can until I get my parts. Today was a good day for cleaning and painting the y-pipe and valve covers.
I didn't feel like taking the valve covers off the good motor, so I just grabbed the set off the bad one.
cleaned and etched with aircraft stripper and then cleaned and wired brushed with simple green.
*sorry the first few pics are bad cell phone pics*
Painting with VHT wrinkle red, I have had this stuff for a while. I was going the strip the paint off the VR valve cover and repaint with this. Never got around to it, wasn't motivated enough. I was more than motivated today.
Fairly dry, enough to handle. I put them back on the bad motor and I will swap them out before I put the good one in.
I also the painted the y-pipe hammered black.
Starting tomorrow, I will start hooking up the wiring harness to the engine so I can figure out the wiring for the swap. I can also put on the flywheel and clutch while I am waiting for everything else. I am looking forward to the next few weeks.
Since I have a couple of weeks before I get my turbos and downpipes I figured it should do some spring cleaning on the motor. I am glad that I have the time, the more that I looked at the motor when I was putting it on the stand, the more I was noticing how dirty it was.
One dirty birdie...
The filth and corrosion made it hard to take some bolts off, like this one in particular.
I wheeled the motor out of the garage today and hit it with some engine bright and simple green.
While I was doing that I cleaned up my extra manifolds and painted them up with some VHT flame proof 2000 degree paint that I got from summit for the VR manifold.
The finished product...
I also cleaned up and painted the intake manifold.
It took a hot minute to get these off of the motor...K03s and K04s have the lines very well mounted and sometimes double mounted.
I think think this motor came from a east coast car/midwest car. There was/is so much rust and salt corrosion. I am still cleaning it up, I think I will be finished tomorrow and luckily I have extra pulleys and covers to replace the these.
I was sentimental and I didn't want to use the big clunky B5 oil cap, so I grabbed the one off my VR6. Smaller, brand new and it says to use synthetic.
There is still a few things that I need to clean up, I also need swap out the crank pulley, this one is way too rusted and I also need some thin sheet metal and pull off the radiator fan pulley and make a blanking plate.
I am hoping that I will have the turbo kit and downpipes in a week or so, I am anxious to get the motor in so I can start tackling wiring. After that or while that is happening, I still need to get intercoolers, bi-pipes, radiator and another 1.8t radiator support because I butchered this one pretty good for the VR6. Fueling, I need fueling as well, but once I get all that sorted out I could drive the car as Stage 3-, can't really get on it even if I wanted to because I still have to on a 1000 miles to break in the clutch.
The other day, I decided I was not going to trim the bumper cover anymore. I trimmed it marginally for the 3" core that I was going to use on the VR6. I was thinking about about getting a JHM front mount, but that is a 3" core as well. I would be right back were I left off, sort of. Not having a front mount would also give me a place to put my 12" 1360 CFM SPAL pusher fan that I never got to use from my DSM days and I get the ability to cleanly remount the Mocal oil cooler from the VR6 setup. Having said that, I needed to reclaim some space for side mounts...
...from here.
This afternoon I declared eminent domain and relocated some things. Luckily I got to reuse that line going from the pump to the filter. I don't have much feed hose left.
Once I starting looking at this picture and after I was finished looking at my daughters bike, I decided that I would cut the fronts off the resonators were it is 3" and weld on an short extension and 3" vband and then extend those up to mate to the 3" downpipes.
I am glad that I had all the fittings to change this up, I ordered more than what I needed for the VR just in case...lucky me.
New location for the fuel filter...
Here are the final results of my cleaning efforts as well.
I am thinking for the side mounts, I will go with either ER or AMD units.
Hopefully soon, I know there was a decent back order when I ordered mine. I called Tial on Friday and they said they were putting together the kits and shipping.
Now after reading all the new stuff...I am le happy.
Damn you work fast. I guess I'm picky. I am still trying to find a reliable motor. I will one day create a 2.7 build thread. But mine is being held off on account that I am about to build some custom Rs's. What can I say, I'm a wheels whore. But this thread is awesome. You are a true motor head man. Too bad you're all the way on the West coast, I'd love to see this project and craftsmanship in person.

REDRUM
seph: who's ricky and why were you at his place with all those dildos?
I have been getting a few parts here and there. The 034 downpipes came in first a while ago, I got my fueling kit from EPL on Tuesday and my Bipipes, diverter valves and some other odds and ends yesterday from 034.
The bipipes are pretty nice workmanship. I was going to get them coated but I decided on a raw finish and I would just coat them myself.
I am coating them in VHT wrinkle plus, the same that I used for the valve covers. I was expecting the adapter plates to be anodized black. I am painting them hammered black right now. I need to go out to garage and put another coat on them and do the other side of the bipipes.
Some other things that I was working on was the fan pulley thing. At first I went out and got some thin sheet steel to just bend a plate. Then I decided at the last moment that I wanted better protection that that.
I massaged the stock piece a bit...
I also picked up the passenger side tranny mount from AudiS4parts. I already had the drivers side from the VR6 adventure. Since I had the auto subframe, it is the same as the B5 S4 with the ears. I am swapping to B5 S4 tranny mounting.
Also, a while back I robbed the wheels and tires off of my Avant and put them on my B8. I didn't feel like buying new tires for my B8 and it gave me an excuse to get lighter wheels for the Avant. Unfortunately it was late at night, the C.B. for a B8 is 66.1 and I only had two centering rings and shit ton of 57mm ones. No worries...
As a result of that I need new kicks because my Avant is on jacks. These are on the short list...I am trying to balance weight and price. I should be ordering something from TireRack tomorrow.
