welded seam on differential
So it looks like the new B8's have welded seams which prevent a differential mod. I was wondering if someone could give me a more nuanced explanation of what exactly this means to a non-technical person like me. I was going to get a STASIS high-bias diff, but apparently that is no longer an option. I was wondering if I actually had any options, like a Quaife diff for example.
I should also mention my track time will be limited at best, but I am interested in a higher torque differential for the snow as well. Is this a practical need, or will I be satisfied with a stock differential even with only a few days per year at the track.
Thanks
2011 A4 2.0T: Quattro 6MT, Ibis White on Black, Bang & Olufsen Audio, Titanium Sport Package, STASIS exhaust + ECU, 35% tint all around, debadged, piano-black rings, JHM ST Shifter, ECode HFIP, 3M ClearBra, Weathertec Mats, 18" V708 Matte Black Wheels w/ Dunlop Wintersport 3Ds. Soon to Install: Ecode Alu Kruez Stabilizer, Ecode Sway bars w/links, 034 HF Cat, 034 Catch-Can, 034 FMIC.

If you mean the center diff, it is assembled and welded together meaning that you can't take it apart to modify the shim pack. Earlier diffs can be disassembled by removing pins or bolts. You might be able to get a new diff housing engineered but that would blow your budget by tens of thousands of dollars.
Audi is also welding ring gears to diffs now. Ring gears are normally held onto the differential carrier with a bunch of bolts. It appears that as part of cost cutting Audi is EBM (electron Beam Welding) the ring gears to the diff housing. It may be possible to swap diff carrier but that would mean cutting the ring gear off the diff and then having it EBM'ed to the new carrier, meaning it will be VERY expensive. Or sourcing a different rear differential that allows you to swap the differential.

You know, I'm on the fence bout geting a Center Diff upgrade myself.
How much is the 4:1/80% power to the front or rear going to make a difference in normal daily driving?
I'm sure for the occasional spirited driving session and around corners or highway entrance/exit ramps it might be nice.
.
I've gone so far as to call a STaSIS dealership to make sure the part is available for my VIN and it is, but I'm not sold yet.
I might concentrate on other mods for now...
