pretty simple, got a 100 ohm 1w resistor and some heat shrink, wrapped the heat shrink around the resistor and tied the 2 prongs around one of the license plate bulbs and bingo no more bulb out warning.
i know what you're going to say what about the HEAT! the bulb actually is generating more heat then the resistor is after 20minutes of driving so not too worried at this point and because of that I moved the resistor directly ontop of the bulb so that theres a heat shrink barrier between it and and anything else.. guess time will tell to see how long this lasts. pics below.
and also decided to clean my rims.... (orange blast rim cleaner + megiuars tire wet)
was busy haha, and didn't really think of it until the only better alternative involved peeling back the entire trunk liner and sticking a massive resistor inside there
i'll probably re-do this in a week or so when the temperature gets a bit warmer outside and I have some motivation to solider the prongs properly as well as the piss poor job I did on the heat shrink (I was working with a pretty poor lighter that was running out of fluid!)
I'm curious how this works long-term. I bought one of those 50w 6ohm resistors that's a giant aluminum heat sink'd beast and that thing got SO friggin' hot. I didn't trust mounting it and leaving it. We threw some drops of water on it and the water was literally jumping of and instantly turning to vapor it was so hot. We were guessing the temps somewhere in the ~350deg f range. I pulled everything out and put it back to stock because of that. Sucks too because I had a pretty bad ass backup cam/LED replacement for the left license plate light. Now I have to drill the plate and trunk to mount a stand alone cam.

big props to you! why do you only have to put the resistor on only one of the bulbs? please post pics of the re-do when you get to it. thanks

because if you notice when you are changing the bulbs from stock to led when you replace one light theres no bulb out warning, when both are in you get the bulb out.. so you only need one of them to get the annoying warning off...
i'll try to get some better pics up later this week - it's not much different from what I did above but i'll be solidering the prongs to the resistor instead of just coiling them around
and yes it work with a colour DIS.
the bulb gets hot more so than the resistor does - if anything long term the bulb might burn out but that's why I got some cheapie 2dollar ones in there.
Does anyone know what type of resistor I need for this DRL bulb?

i tried this an it doesnt work. bought ddm festoon bulbs. using 1 resistor like the one listed only illuminates one bulb. using two does the same. using none illuminates none. any help?

Got it to work the first time around, then went to cover the resistor with heat shrink tubing for permanent use, I added the resistor back to the bulb it wouldn't work. Couldn't get it to work ever since... very annoying
EDIT:
The resistor I used was a 100 ohm .5w .... I'm gonna guess it burnt out only having a .5w rating thus not working anymore...

Alright well, I hate to beat a dead horse and keep reviving this topic, but I've been tinkering around with this to see what's the best possible method to get this working and I've come up with the conclusion that putting one 100ohm 2 Watt resistor on each of the license plate bulbs will eliminate all DIS errors. Having one resistor on one light would work for a bit, then while driving I'd get the error to come back on. So for those who never got it to work, try this and I'm sure you'll get it.
The lights don't dim, and since the resistors are rated for 2 watt, you don't need to ever worry about overheating. I'd still recommend using some heat shrink wrap like the OP stated, just to enclose and keep the light circuits safer.
Goal preventing a fault code with a led setup is to calculate a resistor value that, added to the LED draw will equal the same draw than the original bulb. The value I am referring to is the Ohms of course since the watt value is only for power dissipation.
Now, how did you came up with our conclusion that this resistor will get rid of ALL errors codes? And it would be nice if you could post the math as well.
As for now, because all the LED have different draw,my our conclusion is totally false
My mistake Phil. I didn't take into account that others would be using different LED bulb set-ups. I suppose I was just excited to finally get this working after a lot of trial and error on my part. You are right though.
I'm using the LED's off Ebay from Zeus group http://www.ebay.com/itm/170516746686. I noticed with these LED's, you can get the fault code to go away with using one resistor, but for me it inevitably always came back wether it was 1 day or 1 weeks time. I decided to use 2 resistors, one for each LED and it's taken the problem away so far. I've been driving for a few weeks now and all seems to be working great.
So in other words, if you're using this set up, this method should work for you. If you have different LED's and you're getting a fault still, give it a try.

So i presume from what I have been reading no one at all sells license plate bulbs that will work straight from the box. I hear some people have luck others dont. Its like hit or miss.

It seems to be hit or miss, yes. The ones off Ebay that I bought from Zeus Group are advertised as Error Free, but they sure as hell aren't. I complained and got my money back, then bought some .99 cent resistors and fixed the issues

Hahaha. That makes sense and interesting I wanna get some bulbs but truly dont wanna deal with this nonsense anymore I am surprised a vendor has not found a complete solution for this and sold them.

If I'm not mistaken, you can purchase error free LED's that come with a built in resistor that actually do work, but you're paying a pretty penny for them. I think the majority of people here just buy the cheap ass Ebay lights and simply add a resistor for 1/4 of the price.

seems to me, in my reading experience, the error free LEDs still throw an error if you have Color DIS but somewhat work if you have Red DIS

Yea i can imagine the pricing on it. Makes sense I'm gonna just do that and get the same ones you did and see what happens if the bulb out comes on I will just do this resistor mod and go from there. I have the Red Display so I hope it doesn't even go off for me lol

The bulb out will go for sure without a resistor. You can code it out in VAG-com, or add the 100ohm, both will fix it 100%

I have the red DIS also, let me know if it works! Good luck

x2....i feel like litterally everyone would have already done this if it was either A)possible or B) common knowledge. all the license plate light threads ive read through and this is a first.
