"I feel I want to like, take the engine [artistic pause, hand gesture] out..."
As documented earlier in my thread, I dropped the oil pan to change the oil pickup screen as preventive maintenance. Everything was looking good, had no sign of leaks but I noticed I started loosing more oil than before. Previously my car burned like 3/4qt oil between oil changes, OCI about 5-6k(about a year for me), but now I had lost little more than half a qt in 4months..
So decided to give it a closer look to rule out if it actually leaking or if its burning more oil, everything chacked out good. Then I was to inspect my downpipe while the car was on jackstand already, I found this:
I does not leak anywhere around the pan seal, check. Oh wait, ITS LEAKING IN THE GOD DAMN WORST PLACE OF ALL! Those pics are shot up where the two oil pan bolts bolts INSIDE the bellhousing.
I worked hard to do the oil pan and pickup on the jackstands, in my garage, thinking everything was good it turned apeshit on me. I was so angry at this point, I would have smacked anyone in the face.
Sooo, this was last wednesday I found this out. As I was clearly doing the oilpan again, this time im doing it right. I decided that night to take the engine out to rectify this situation, and doing the oil pan this way, I got the opportunity to doublecheck if my new FX400 had been contanimed + get a good visual inspection of the whole engine before the BT swap.
No time to waste, started out friday night when the kids went to bed
Front bumper off, working on the core support and getting the steering cooler off:
With the core support off, I took off the powersteering pump, AC pump and wiring:
Pretty good friday night progress, engine 2 bolts away from being pulled.
Saturday morning, -30*c outside. I managed to get this lovely temp inside the garage:
Fuck that, I had 2 socks, 2 pants, 3 shirts on and a bag of beer
Went on, unbolted the sucker and pulled it:
Bolted it to the engine stand:
Began with clutch inspection, heres the PP outside:
Clutch disc, 1000miles 50/50 highway/city, about 90% broken in:
Clutch disc measured 7.87mm's, a brand new FX400 disc measures 8.03mm's.
PP inside:
Flywheel, 19lb steel 240mm:
No signs of oil contamination on the clutch components =
Cleaned them up and put it back on with some new loctite on the PP bolts:
Then I flipped the engine and unbolted the oil pan, when I got the last bolt out, the pan fell off the engine. WTF?! Usually you have to pry it off with a big ass screwdriver..
I have no pics of this, but the "sealant" i used was rock hard, I could get it off with my pinky finger. LOL, I was amazed it didnt leak like a river..
I recommend using OEM sealant, Victor Reinz Reinzosil VAG part# D 176 404 A2:
Sealed it back up:
That was it for saturday, I had a heater blowing on the pan over the night for the sealant to do its thing:
Sunday started with bolting the engine off the stand and cramming it back in the car:
All bolted down in the car again:
Put on the accessories, wiring etc. again, ready for the core support:
You make pulling an engine look like cake! How long did that take you in total?
It isnt too hard, just ALOT of wrenching.. I think I spent about 20hours, there was a few things that took forever to figure out though. But know when I have done one time I can cut at least 5hours off that time. It took about 5-6hours to get out, worked on it about 8hours and it took 4-5 to get it in and buttoned up alone.
Figuring how to bolt it to the stand, go get the parts to do it and execute took me a good 3hours. Getting the engine to mate with gearbox without one of those lift blocks the line it up took 1-1.5 hours longer than it should have done.
I'll never complain about it being too cold to wrench again!
lol, I swore when I get my own garage im never gonna complain again doing work to my cars. I have done 2 suspensions outside, 1 exhaust outside in the rain, oilchanges in winter time etc...
I forgot to add this little blooper I found while the engine was out:
It is the coolant flange, if you look close you can see I missed the flange with the bolt LOL! Somehow it was 100% sealed anyway since it was clamped by the bracket for the crankcase breather tube

Im currently waiting on my basefiles from Tapp, I hope to get them before the weekend, emailed him the readout sunday. Maestro seems to have come a long way since it was released, more user friendly, more maps added etc.
You can now select any basefile you want directly in maestro, without having tapp send them to you. But ofcourse, my ECU is not in that list
my friend you are gonna have a lot of time spent - tuning with Maestro. You better start reading fast!
Yes, I started reading about tuning Motronic's when Chris (MmmBoost) started the Maestro thread

Yeah you would figure there might be some people with a dead Elim turbo that they could sell the exhaust housing from. Odd thing is that there are tons of China copies of everything else but not 1 single Elim housing copy. lol

Yeah, maybe im just having bad luck

Good for you for just having a go, and the end results are amazing.
thanks for the kind words! I hope to inspire people with this thread
your thread is a true inspiration one of the reasons i bought my silver wagon now i just have to learn to start wrenching
Thanks and grrreat choice! Silver is the fastest color also
A little update on the Maestro
I provided Tapp with a stock binary for my ECU type, he has to add this type to his collection(even though Hansi and me have exact same ECU?).
The ECU in my car is flashed with Powerchip stage1, so my file cant be readed fully. And I would not like to have my basefile to be based on another companys flash, impossible to know which maps that have been altered from the beginning.
I want to start from scratch with a 100% stock binary to keep things sane, build my own stage1 and get that 100% then move on and install my RR1000's. That would be nice practical training before tuning the HTA and B5 S4 MAF.
I assume Tapp has to dissassemble the binary I sent him(idk, maybe he has written something to help with this, he probably has) which takes some time, but I rather wait a little extra to get a 100% stock base to start from
Im having trouble now deciding if I should go with Maestro, or if im going to the dark side...
Maestro has many nice features for me as a novice tuner, has failsafes and is constantly getting updated. BUT, it is restricted with a selection of maps AND restricted to one ECU. If I do it the hard way I have no restrictions what so ever, but I loose some other fancy stuff.
I have started digging in my own ECU as there is no definition for it on the internet(that I can access), I have defined pretty much all maps that Tapp provides to '02 ECUs:
There is a few more I would like to add to start with, like accel/decel fueling and coldstart fueling/cranking etc.
My maestro is not licensed yet and my basefile should be ready next week, as of now I dont know if going to start with Maestro anyway or not. Im a true DIY'er and I know in the future I will go bad boy tuning in hex, but maybe I should start out with maestro anyway to get comfortable tuning my car before going hardcore without failsafes lol!
just audibated to your car. wow. nice work man. such a motivation.
Thank you sir.
This thread was made to motivate people to do DIY things and build their car in their own way. I am a true visionary and I love to learn to do stuff, nothing is too hard, it just takes longer time to learn.
Most likely just best to play with the Maestro for a while before even thinking of going the other way.
You are probably right. The only thing is I feel i might be held back with the selection of maps, I dont know Tapp's standpoint on adding maps. I had the feeling he is not too keen about adding maps..
If there was no problems to get maps added, I would not think twice about doing Maestro on my car. It is a nice all-in-one package with the logger/flasher and all.

Yeah it is raw, but when I port in those maps into Tunerpro it is no more scary than altering maps in Maestro. Save it, flash it and log it.
The Nefmoto flasher has come a huge way, and Tony is updating it as his time permits. He has plans to extend his software even more too, he is putting in a shitload of work for the community.
Here is a B5S4 M box file in Tunerpro for reference:

Tapp has added some maps for the B6 A4 guys, I know MmmBoost has requested and got some maps added.
I hope you choose Maestro and request maps you find out you need and get them added. I don't see why Tapp would have a problem with that, should only make Maestro an even better option for everyone. It seems to me that Tapp is working hard on improving Maestro, with constant updates, so I think and hope he is forthcoming with adding maps when they are requested. A potential problem with it I guess is that it might become too advanced for beginners (it can be argued it already is), but then he could just make some sort of toggle for advanced options?

Anyways, my vote goes to starting with Maestro
If I look up the maps I would like to added with all adresses so he doesnt have to do the hard work, maybe it is easier to get maps added. As for being too advanced, if the number of maps get too large, he could add a list with checkboxes so each person can choose which maps he wants to be visable in the editor, should not be a big deal.
Something I noticed right away I wanted to be added, is the Bosch abbreviations to each map(like Ignition timing - KFZW etc, like how I named my maps in the screenshot above), I cant believe those are not in there already. That makes stuff 100 times easier to look up.
Hansi I could not reply to your email, only got delivery fail. I dont know what happened lol

I agree, if you do all the hard work he really should just add the maps. Good point on checkboxes on which maps you want displayed.
I definately agree on the Bosch abbreviations, I'm sure we could get it added. In fact, I'll add it right now to a thread on the Eurodyne forum called feature request
Hmm, maybe my mail server is acting up again, you could just PM me.
Like I said, I hope you choose Maestro. The Maestro community needs more knowledgeable people and people willing to share their experiences.

I plan on documenting my tuning in this thread, leaning towards Maestro IF the basefile is closely matched to my requirements. Either way, tuning in hex or Maestro, it is the same system. The successful/unsuccessful tuning approch will be the same, a good strategy shown on either can be copied to the other.
Im not afraid to make mistakes while learning to calibrate my engine and posting it here, this is the reason why you dont see any beginners document their first calibration, the fear of being laughed at by more experienced tuners. If someone wants to laugh at me for being a noob, go ahead lol, I will laugh with you
I always budget some level of failure while trying to learn new stuff, and im never dissappointed at the end. I have come far in the past 2-3 years, this was one of the first threads I made on this forum, and now I am able to indentify maps in a hex binary out of my cars ECU.
