Generally people who want the modifications are willing to help a lot more than people who don't need them. The catch is I'm also not prepared to release the coding to the module to world yet so in order to get the scans I will need remote access to computers hooked up to the cars. I don't expect to have people lining up for that. So we'll see how long this takes. There are stages involved in developing these these things and participation is always the difficult part.
I'm sure I could arrange this. Bulb sedan & possibly avant.
Congrats Dave and Thorsten! This is a HUGE deal. I'd defintely understand if you wanted to protect your investment by doing it over remote connection and enabling the behaviours as requested by owners.

Basically, they have reverse engineered the codes in the rear tail lights for the LED lights. This will allow people who have bulb tail lights to convert to LED tails and allow those with LED tails to program their lights to act like the lights on the European or 'Rest Of World' cars.
.
Think of it similar to being able to upgrade to Xenon/LED DRLs if you have regular Halogen headlights or being able to program the LED to act like they do in Europe or RoW.
Did they actually give you codes or did they send you one of their dongle things? Maybe we should talk about pulling all the coding from your module 46. :)
I got the coding fix onsite at Kufatec (was more less kicked out of there workshop while they did the fix - very secret) - I don't know if the fix is included in the kits sold today - and the 'problem' was/is only when braking with rear fog lights switched on.
On the photo below you can on the left side see how the brake lights are working OEM when fogs are on - and on the right side how Kufatec did it on my A4 (first try).
Then I got the coding fix, and this is what it looks like on my Avant today:
The problem is the BCM2 module, where one Channel is missing for each side. It should control the middle bar in the outer LED - that is why you need to have a wire from the inner middle bar to the outer middle bar, and if you want to activate the middle bar in the outer, then it is the inner bar that you activate - but then it will only be the middle bar in the inner LED where braking is shown - not a nice solution.
I think my solution where there are no difference between braking with parking lights alone, and braking with fogs on, is better then the OEM way.
David, if you want my coding, you need to send my what to do (maybe only the login code), because I don't have internet access where I'm parked.

That would be great if you could. I'll need different years before I'm done but any are a good start. There is some software out there that other places on the net are using when they charge for programming that looks perfect. Specially since it's free. Anyone who is considering helping out can check the software here: http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx
I plan on testing it on my car soon, right now it's snowed in at a garage and I don't have internet access there.
That's neat, and can be used. Also, in the past I've found MSN/Windows Live Messenger to be the easiest way to run a remote connection. You just have to have the person on your 'friends' list and you request for remote assistance in the conversation window. I haven't checked if this is still there in the most recent version.

I would say based on what Kufatec did with your lights that they can really be customized. You don't have to say, but if you don't mind my asking what did they charge for making those changes to your lights?
They won't tell - and if it is what other has reported, then the coding from Kufatec is based on some parameter settings.

No, the inside will by default go on when braking - it is only when the rear fogs are on, that the inside won't show braking. I got the inside enabled with the coding fix (see photos in previous post).
I can see about borrowing a VAG. I have internet access in my garage and would be more than happy to let you connect, but I guess first I have to get the LED housings.

I think I really need to get pictures of the different lights in all possible states to better figure out the coding.
David,
I'm more than happy to set up the tripod and run through all the combinations but with five variables (tail, turn, brake, reverse, fog) doing all combinations is 32 pictures!
Since fog and reverse are incandescents then I guess they'll not really come into it much ?? That would obviously shrink the number of combinations massively.
If you can let me know what actually would be useful I'll get them over to you for my UK spec '10 Avant i.e. factory LEDs.
I am an owner of a 2010 A4 Allroad (avant) with factory LEDs. Would my coding be interesting to know as well?
Is it coding values from module 09 and 46 which is needed?
David, good work. My S5 was orignally the normal bulbs which i upgraded to the led lights and had them recoded with a kufatec dongle. If you need the coding let me know
I had my car powered up for over a week straight getting this code .
No wonder I kept seeing you on google chat the whole week straight, but set to away!!! Hah. Thought that was strange.
On a tangent, where would get the LED parts from if your a sedan bulb? You have to get all 4 parts (L & R inner & outer) plus some kind of wiring harness???

I have to look up who it was, but there is a person on here in Germany who can get the stuff. He gets headlights for people. He told me the 4 pieces total is about $1k USD for the Avant, so probably pretty close for the sedan.

Well done David! I hope you're using a USB extension lead so that you can see the lights with out having to walk to the rear of the car with each change!! :-D
Yeah, the coding should (hopefully) resolve two main objectives.
1) enable/configure the individual lights options (tail, brake, fog, brake w/ fog - etc.)
2) bulb out warnings in DIS, when retrofitting LED from non-LED

OK so I have figured out all the lights and channels....
There is no way however to have the rear fog lights on and brakes work on the inner lights. I tried every combination out there. ... I know confusing, just lots of variations.
You're some steps ahead but I played a bit with my halogen taillights today and faced the same situation so far.
Either the inner sections work as brake lights (and you'll lose your fog rear lights - once the switch is engaged, it will immediately turn off again), or they work as rear fog lights but aren't affected by the brakes.
Little hope remains since I wasn't able to test every combination in the related adaption channels yet. This quest is a toughie - there's no stock coding available to compare with.
retrofitted (OEM+): tow bar, bluetooth&rSAP kit, pdc+, color dis, light&rain sensor, auto dimming mirror, highbeam assist, auto folding&dimming mirrors, charisma switch, alarm, electrical front seats (memory driver side), light package+ambient lighting+illuminated door pockets, heated rear seats, xenon incl. auto leveling+headlamp wash system, side assist, illuminated exterior door handles front+rear, LED taillights, auxiliary heater, powered rear window blinds ...
next: we'll see
......Anyone who as an 08/09 however is pretty safe to start planing a swap. Don't buy a harness though, I think we can do better than Kufatec's conversion with a bit of planing. So sit tight everyone.
Avants as well? If so, we need to start brainstorming a good place to purchase OEM LED kits :)
Now anyone with LED's now that wants to convert to Euro, let me know and we'll try and do that for you now. I can use my current coding to convert you over.
Hey David,
I would like to convert over to Euro style taillights, how would the process be like?
I have to look up who it was, but there is a person on here in Germany who can get the stuff. He gets headlights for people. He told me the 4 pieces total is about $1k USD for the Avant, so probably pretty close for the sedan.
I found them on eBay.de for about $900 shipped last year. Was almost ready to pull the trigger but then I learned about the coding issues. Guess I'll have to do some search again now!
Great work Dave and Thorsten, I wanted this mod since I got the car a year ago. I would really like it more if the blinking is amber. I installed euro leds on My GTI and got the blinkers to blink amber( initially it was red ) using vag com programing.

Rear Fog?
BYTE 03, BIT(s) 1 & 2 set to = "1" (check the BITs in the long Code Helper)
BYTE 18, BIT 3 set to = "1"
BYTE 04, BIT 6 set to = "0"
Bonus BYTE/BIT:
BYTE 17, BIT 0 set to = "1" (emergency braking, flash the Tail Lights)
BYTE(s) 18/19 contain BITs relating to Cold Diagnostics that are not required on the LED Tails, except BIT 3 which is the BIT for the Rear Fog Diag.
If you are not doing the Rear Fog, then skip what I posted concerning the Rear Fog.

damn! i thought by cracked you meant we finally had a fix for LED Tails for 09 A4's lol
oh nevermind. im such a dumbass lol. DavidB8 ur da man! nice to see you using your coding skills to do something fun, Im a JAVA/PHP Developer myself, what type of coding/language do you use to do this awesome work?

This is great work David. Do you think this would allow those of us with the Euro LEDs to replace the incandescent turn signal bulb with an LED? I'm thinking this will now be possible without using a resistor. Also wondering if accessing the BCM module will allow for other mods (besides tail lights) since it controls other functions of the car, correct?
