Canon and Nikon both make remarkable products, so you'll be much more limited by your ability as a photographer for a LARGE amount of time before you're limited by your camera if you buy either one of these brands. That being said, here's a few pointers that I considered when making my decision between them initially...
-Do any of your friends have a Canon or a Nikon DSLR? If they do, it will be easier to get insight/knowledge about using the product (brand specific) if you have a friend handy whose brain you can pick.
-as above, which do you prefer in terms of ergonomics? Since both companies competing pretty directly with each other in the DSLR category, they are pretty competitively priced and equipped so you'll get a very similar product if you pay the same for each brand.
-If you end up really getting into photography, you'll be happy with either one but I find Canon accessories, lenses, etc. to be more readily available and more frequently available used on sites like amazon.
-Lastly, if you are familiar with photography, you can determine which lenses you prefer and which company offers the lenses you like to use at better prices. For me, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens is a GODSEND, at $100, its value can't be beat. Its amazing. That alone would sway me towards Canon over Nikon if I was on the fence still.
In the end, I think most PROS use Canons or at least Canon lenses, best in the business as far as most people are concerned. If you have more questions, shoot me a PM and we can chat. Best of luck!
