Hi all, Sorry I've been quiet for a little while (usually means something is in the works)
I Just got the official invite to compete in the 2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 26th, in my 2001 A4 with the 4.2L V8! Will be rockin' #21 in the AWD Time Attack class. I'm pumped!
(Mods, for some reason I can't post in the projects builds so if you feel it needs to go there feel free to move it)
Here is what I've been up to for the last little bit when i am not working or going to school. The strip down begins...
one piece mounting plates for the roll cage:
Using a nice manual pipe bender:
Main hoop test piece out of cheap pipe, (perfect it less than 1mm gap to roof)
Actual main hoop bent out of DOM with test piece for front dogleg:
Front dogleg conveniently fits through the vent hole (will have to cut up the dash later though for removal but oh well)
With the cage moving along, I started some side pojects as well
Carbon-fiber sunroof replacement:
6k twin weave:
Decided to see how it would work without vacuum bagging, doing a simple overlay of the OEM sunroof
Finished product:
Custom Aluminum Radiator:
Its pathetic how small an OE replacement radiator is...
Perfect fit:
Tight fit with the V8...
I'll have more pics posted as I make more progress. A bit slower with work and school, but oh well.

How much of the original Interior is going back into the car?
This car has deffinitely become an inspiration for me to go with a 4.2, theres a guy on vortex selling pretty much everything needed for the swap for $1500 im so tempted

Well the Pikes Peak rules are:
"8. Interior
A. All non-essential items must be removed."
so everything but the dash is out...
and don't be fooled by the $1500 price tag, there will still be plenty more stuff you need to do that will add up pretty quick. Feel free to ask if you have any questions about it in the future...

Nice build again... You should post some pics of your 944. When did you get it?

I remember seeing your 4.2 swap when I was still living in the midwest and had no idea you live in Boulder (I actually work there now). I would love to see this beast in person when it's up and running. Keep up the good work!
Looking for some decent condition ST's or Vmaxx's.

Come on guys, K03 is stage 1 no matter what you have on top of that. K04 is stage 2 and BT is stage 3. Lets not get like the S4 guys were they need to add a - or + to every stage.
Thanks all, have done a bit more this week.
2 large boxes arrived on my doorstep... i wonder...
Had to make it a twin turbo
pretty nice fit... could only fit one in the 944 to get it to the shop. needs to move back and down a little bit, but other than that its a nice fit, now I can finish building the cage around them...
Got the front roof bar bent and notched

I got it exactly a year ago actually, haha, it had some body minor damage so I fixed that and gave it some fresh paint... GT3 RS orange :) pics are fresh after paint, so the hood is just up a bit, its not maga-gapping or anything...
its a NON-TURBO but I love how the turbo bumper spoiler looks so i threw one on there for kicks.

Pretty sure everyone and their mom on AZ wants to see them on the 4.2
yeah i want to see them on there too... but that would kinda go against the reasoning of doing the 4.2 in the first place, of having good power at OEM reliability... but you never know what is in store in the future :)

nice project, can't wait to see it done!!! I know I would love to do a v8 swap but I can't afford it, now I'm thinking I'm just gonna rebuild my turbo and chip and gut my cat and catch can and maybe fmic. Now I'm also thinking about spray painting my wheels bronze come summer time. How you do it I don't understand but I'm always impressed!
Wow, lotta work going into that thing man, looks good, two questions....
1) Is that pipe bender really mounted into concrete in your back yard? If so, that is so dam bad ass.
2) Did the female mold of that cabon fiber sunroof fit into the car? If it did, did you trim it at all? Im just wondering how it is that you got that thing to stay in there mounted and how operational the sunroof is now. Thanks.

Always loved this project cant wait to see some videos of it tearing it up on Pikes Peak. Quick question though, how big are those front tires in the pic they look massive? Also I sent you a PM about those Holsets.

How's this project coming along? WE NEED UPDATES!!!!! haha
The Car: 1998.5 A4 1.8TQMS (fairly stock at the moment), stainless steel brake lines, S5 style projectors w/5k HIDs, 2.5in catback, 710n, K04, FMIC, SOON TO HAVE LIST: gutted cat, chip, snub, 4:1 center diff mod
The Bike: 2001 Honda RC51 (fairly stock), stainless brake and clutch lines, Power commander, 2:1 Jardine headers with shorty DD pipe, HID, this bike is the reason I don't need an uber fast car!
More updates, about three weeks away from being done. Now that seats are in the harness bar can be put in at the right height, and the door bars can be put in at the right height as well
Back half is done
Both seat mounts done
intricate rear strut platework
Co-driver seat sits 2-3 inches lower for better cg

All the pieces are done and tacked in! Complies with FIA rules except for two bars that i would have to add later to reinforce the A-pillars even more... Now the whole thing just needs to be welded
two piece door bars
harness bar done
a lot going on, but the notching is spot on!
roof bars done
makes for some great triangulation, creates a big X across the entire top portion of the cage
view from driver seat
lots going on now that its all done
