Thanx for the post. I need to check my plugs here, I am running on the rich side here, the cold days are coming. I am already hearing my exhaust poping on deceleration.
It was actually a question regarding whether the B7 DIY outlines the basic process for the B8. Coming on 35k miles on my end and would like to do the change myself.
It dosen't make much of a difference with our B8. Do you have access to a sparkplug socket? And remember to be gentle with the wires and clips connecting to the coil pack, they could be brittle, especially in cooler climate.
Thanks for the warning. Figured it would be similar. Just didn't want to miss out on any nice to know tips specific to our b8's. Still have to find a torque wrench and a sparkplug socket. Only have the 1/2in drive torque wrench which i use for the wheels.
I thought the OEM were bosch or NGK? They're switching from one to the other according to the dealer, I can't remember which was switched.
Called a local dealer and they stated the OEM's were NGK. However, seems like I didn't get the correct part number. Any info on the oem NGK part number? For some reason can't seem to find this information anywhere.
thanks for the part numbers...ordered from sunsetaudi.
One thing, anti-seize - any point in sourcing the copper based compounds vs. the generic aluminum/copper/graphite permatex "advanced formula" found at your local pepboys?
Found this DIY video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN-XW2gqd_E
Was still a little unsure of how the wire harness tabs work but the video makes a little more sense out of it.
As well, emailed NGK and they stated they advised against using any anti-seize:
"With NGK plugs we do not recommend using anti-seize. The zinc coating used on our plugs is all that's needed to prevent corrosion and plug seizure. Just install the plugs dry and you'll be good to go."
Thanx for sharing the pix. Yeah, I remember when your intake manifold gave away. Indeed, your plugs looked fouled. Looked like it ran abit rich.
Yeah I'm not sure aboutthe lean theory. I do know that in the mornings it idled like a crap box abut after the engine heated up it was better. The plugs were toast for that reason. I would expect to change them every 35K miles.

"successful" change on my end as well. Though still, was a real pain detaching the wiring harness. Like the guy who made that first DIY i linked to, I ended up breaking one of the clips. Basically spent about 30 minutes getting the wiring harness off and about 15 minutes actually changing the plugs. Need to buy a 90degree pick for next time.
One thing to note, like eaniemeanie, I pulled out Bosch plugs. But the oems that I ordered and installed were NGK's. No noticeable difference on my part as of yet. In fact, no noticeable difference period after changing out the plugs so far. A bit disappointed given the effort spent in detaching that wire harness.

Yeah but better to have no differentce than some. I was running pretty rough for a while....
When I first inquired about plugs (when I was going to do my 55K, but then finding out the dealer replaced them at 35K) Sunset Audi told me that the dealer OEM was switching from Bosch to NGK.

I figured it was just a sales thing. I usually buy my Maintenance stuff from ECS.
Nope - not cracked. Good point.
.
Just plugs it is then.
I'm on my second set of plugs and they are fine. i expect to replace those on the next oil change(95K). My coils look fine. Never trust a person who makes money the more you spend on "maintaining" your car.

Thanks for the pics MYFASTA4, so from them based on the coil packs they need to be replaced. Is there a regular maintenance mileage that they should be changed at?
Based on ECS is their STI packs any better then factory? They also have a tool to remove them is it necessary?
Thanks all who have contributed to this thread...very helpful I did mine last night and they were a piece of cake...after 34k they had pretty good amount of use....
that diy is really close, the only difference that i can tell is that we only have 1 screw holding the conectors to the coils
after 31k miles
I just changed my plugs out at 28k and they looked the same. Oh, and for those who are still unsure of the factory plugs, I pulled out NGK and replaced them with Bosch Laser Iridiums. No difference really. It idles a little smoother but I also did my oil change at the same time so I'm hoping for a little improvement in my Hp as well as MPG's.
Okay so I've been on the Bosch plugs for a couple days now. It feels as if I'm missing some hp. It also seems as if the idle has gotten progressively worse.
