I wish I could keep my iPhone in the center console while being plugged in to the AMI (located in the glovebox). Does anyone know anything about a possible extension cord for the AMI? (DavidB8 - you seem like the B8 master in this forum - if you don't know of a way to do this, I'll put up the white flag and keep reaching over to the glovebox to plug in my phone!!).
I'm guessing I'm not the only one that would love a change like this... thoughts?
Any suggestions on how to route the cable from the glovebox to the center console?
Does the route detailed in link provided in my previous post not work with your cable? It goes from the glovebox to the center console and out the coin holder. It could easily be extended to go further back to the arm rest, but you may have to poke a hole for it to come out.

I haven't got my A4 in yet - but do you still have ability to control the iPod FROM the iPod screen in the B8? Or is it disabled once it's plugged into the car (and can only use the menu in the car dash/screen)?
If you can't I guess the only reason for the extension is just easy access for removing. Any work arounds for still being able to use the iPod screen (if in fact you can't with factory settings)?
You can't with the AMI. The car takes full control of your iPod/iPhone.
Thanks JCS. So I assume with the iPhone you MUST use bluetooth in the car? No way to pick up the phone (physically) and use it? I know that's not possible if it's in the glove box, but just thinking about the extension cable if you can still use phone capabilities while holding it to your face.
I know if you jailbreak your iphone/ipod there is an app that will let you have full control of your iphone while plugged in. its called "noaccessorysplash" its in cydia look it up and make sure you download the correct version for whatever OS version your running.

Tried it this evening. Very good find! I was able to get the AMI display out-of-sync with the iPhone. If you use both AMI controls and the iPhone controls to change music, it can display the wrong things. Try this: Start a song using AMI, while it is playing, use the iphone control to go into a playlist and pick a new song. The new song will play, but the old song will still be showing the first song and counting down the song duration. Hit the next song button on the iPhone and it continues to be incorrect. If you change folders with AMI (press return) and let it sit, it will revert to the correct song title. Regardless, still a great find by ljnaum26!

I attempted this and tried playing a radio app and Pandora and it kept going back to the iPod. Did this in my father's A8 though since I have xcarlink in mine and I don't use the iPod cable.

I was messing around with youtube and the AMI on my iphone 3GS 2 days ago and it was weird. It started playing from the "ipod" app, a song, and then I hit the home button on the phone, went to Safari, then m.youtube.com and found a music video and started playing it. Initially the music would go back and forth between the ipod song and the youtube song, but then it eventually stayed on the youtube song until it ended, at which point it reverted back to the ipod music (and I had started driving at that point, so didn't want to keep messing with it)
Anyone complete the AMI extension cord install through to under the armrest?
I was curious if anyone knows what this small cover is for, and if you can remove it (without breaking it off)? I figured it's a good place to start to put the extension cord head through since it's pretty wide already.
WOW - is that for cars without MMI that just have to plug their iPod into the "aux" port (I assume that the flap comes down showing in input option)?
Its for cars without AMI. There is just a standard Aux plug under the flap. When I bought this I was planning on just extending the Aux input from my AMI to the centre console. Still not sure if and when I will use it but I have it. The MMI has the ability to enable an Aux input in it's menu but I have no information as to if this can be wired as a separate input yet.

You sure? I was pretty sure it is one or the other. Mind you... You seem to have all the interesting items.
In case there is any confusion, I have the 12V power accessory plug--the kind that you can plug a radar detector in to get power. I do not have an AMI/MMI plug.

The car takes full control of your iPod/iPhone. I can't think of a workaround unless there's something in VCDS
UPDATE: Maybe this was only news to me, but I just hooked up my iPhone 4S and I was able to take FULL control of my iPhone 4S, including playing Pandora!!! All with it just being plugged in in the glove box. Sounds great!!
Now I'll be working on the extension to the center console armrest. I now have a reason to use my iPhone 4S to hook up to the car, rather than just my "full time" iPod.

It used to be that we had to install a hack to get this functionality. Thankfully, its not the case anymore. Good luck with the extension processed!
