Still in the playing stages. The idea is this would plug into the harness with the 12v power point in the armrest so it would dim with the rest of the lights. Right now there are only 3 LED's in place and I can change their light pattern by moving the LED in and out of it's holder a bit. I'm not thrilled with the mountings just yet but it works pretty good.

Love the idea. Is there any way to make these LEDs switchable, independent from the rest of the interior lights? Just wondering if this would be more noticeable to the driver, thus having the ability to switch on/off might be beneficial.

Anything is possible. You could wire them into a switch if you wanted and still had them go to the rest of the lights and dim when they are turned on. The cup holders are back from you so I don't think they would be distracting.

Sounds good. I do think that the light would be caught in our peripheral, but it's not THAT big of a deal. Not like the LEDs are shining in our faces, so it wouldn't be a big deal...like you said.

I like where you're headed with this mod. Would wiring them to the foot well lights to do the trick because then you can adjust it via the MMI screen? Also, a cooling cup holder would be wicked cool!
I'm sure you could wire them to the underseat lights and it's something I was wondering about. The only thing is trying to do it in a nice easy manor. I like plug and play and I'm not sure off hand where the wiring runs from for the seat lights. If it goes through the centre console it could be as easy as splicing one wire. Wouldn't be plug and play though which I can do using the lighting from the 12v plug from the arm rest.

Love it now I want it. Did you drill 3 holes under every spring? And what LED are you using?
On hole under 3 of the springs. Could add more to the rest I suppose. I'm still assessing. I used 3mm flat top LEDs to keep it flush and not interfere with the cup holder along with 3mm led holders and of course some 1/4 watt resistors. Still no where near a DIY yet but should be done playing soon and I'll write one up.

I don't have a center console in my car right now so the cup holder is here in the living room with me:)
I think it should blend pretty good. This is my trial cup holder, my new cup holder should be here in a week or two and I'll do a permanent install and get the centre console back together. If I can figure out a good angle to shot a pick I may place my console back in over the weekend and snap a few pics. In the interim I thought I would post a bit more of a teaser. This is what it would look like with a bottle of water in it.

Extremely intriguing
Assume necessary to remove entire center console - PITA (did last month to replace my console wood trim from almond beige to walnut burl).
Would like to do LEDs in cool white or warm blue. Hope your eBay seller has such or similar colors.
Wire to dash/console lights so that activated off them/at night, rather than using 12V plug in console possible?
Well I'll give a source for the Yanks to get them pre wired. I found a place that has them wired with resistors and ready to use but after I ordered using their checkout and shipping crap they emailed me wanting another $20 for shipping. Can you imagine a $20 surcharge for shipping 20 LED's... But for you guys it would be good since the shipping is cheap in the US and they have multiple colours (sorry colors) to choose from :)
Greg my thought was to get the power for the lighting from the ring that is around the 12v plug. I haven't checked yet but I assume it dims with the rest of the lights. If not then getting the lighting elsewhere wont be hard. Theres a main harness running through the centre console with lighting wires in it.

I had a quick look at the wiring and there is a light control wire going to the 12v plug in the centre console so this can be made up to be a plug and play type wiring job or splice for those that choose to. I'll have this one written up over the weekend.

Oh for those looking here is a link to the US seller that wanted to rip me off for $20 additional shipping. I see they have since added a note about asking them about how bad they are going to rip you off if your not in the US. I just mailed a box to the US for $6.00 and they wanted $20 for a small envelope (yes I'm jaded)...
They only have 1 3mm holder on their site and it's a big metal one. The ones I use are black and pretty well flush mounted in the cup holder to prevent them from interfering with the holder itself.

David,
Looking forward to this write up for my next interior mod, now that I've FINALLY installed the under-seat storage boxes
per your earlier write up - greatly helped a warm weather dummy like me
BTW, the bolts holding the seats to the floor on my 2009 3.2 sedan were M10 Star bolts, not T50 torx - borrowed the socket today from my service guy to get seats out.
Prices for the LEDs on your link are reasonable for sets of 20 and he's got lotsa colors.
Again, thanks for all your incredible and amazing efforts.
I wonder if you can extend this to lighting up the door-card bottle holders. A small hole and an LED would to it, and it'll cast a nice glow along the door.
Oh sure ruin my next surprise. Actually the thought I was having was to light up the entire pocket not just the bottle holder but I wanted to look at the door more before making a call on it. I was actually wondering about putting LED's on the bottom of the door handle itself so they wouldn't get covered if you put something in the pocket. The advantage there is very little wire to run to get to a lighting source. Any ways I was going to pull a door card off this weekend and look so I'll let you know what I find.

Its strange looking at the picture, it looks like they use red light where the bottle holder would be we and a white light shining into the pocket. If we can get some closer pictures we could look more at a factory type install.

Ok wasn't really ready to start thinking about the doors yet but lets get some thoughts going. Light the pockets from the bottom of the door as in up have lights in the bottom of the pocket facing up? OR maybe buying some factory LED lights like that are used under the seats and swapping the LED's over to red instead of the bluish light and cut a hole in the bottom of the door panel and install an actual light.
Thoughts?

I think putting one on the bottom of the door cup holder would be cool and having it light up like you have in the picture above, white? One of my friends put small strobe lights in his A4 by the rear window that could be a idea but I think its a over kill. And what about putting a LED in or by the door handle?
I just took a look at my door and my idea wouldn't work as I posted before. I think putting two LED lights under the window controls would look best one that would shine onto the bottle holder and the other to light up the rest of the pocket
I think for a black interior, red is nicer. In the A8, the white or yellow light was used on lighter interior where the features become a highlight. In the black B8 interior, the white light would highlight dust.
I'm just gauging this from the fact that even in our dark interior, the existing red light on the door handles and the overhead center panel looks nice, whereas the footwell lights don't.
