^^ This...Best Buy's Geek Squad is a great place to learn/start. They start you off based off your experience and then from there they train you and teach you while you work and get paid. I remember me being 18, with basic computer knowledge, in my first REAL computer job working with a guy who was 23 and knew about servers and remote desktop and just blew my doors off with his knowledge. Me being 22 now, I'm at that level. Keep your head up and research, learn, and attempt. You will get to where you wanna be at as long as your ambition drives you. There are pros and cons to certs. They are not what they used to be back in the days. Now a days to bank, you need a degree. One of the leading industries that is growing is IT. Imagine the competition that you have in general, then imagine how many people are going to grab their certs vs people who are going to grab their degrees. I am in your shoes. I work full time, study full time, and do my side jobs over the weekend. Alot of companies now want 4 year degrees, 4 years RESUME exp. Make that your goal. At 19 you are still fresh. Trust me on this one. Start by fixing peoples computers, even if you are doing them for free because at the end of the day, its not so much the work that you do, its the questions you are asked that will begin to open your eyes to the needs of the people you will be dealing with and that by itself will force you to research and learn, which will then force you to experiment, and THAT right there is key..

The one other thing to remember is you CAN'T remember everything or know it all, don't even bother to try, it won't work! Stuff changes so rapidly.

^^ Especially in technology. It all depends on what environment you work in too. For example, I work I.T. in video post production, so I am working with raids and SAN's for editorial and graphics compared to working with servers and storage for software deployment on very larger grand scheme.

Knowing the basic procedure, terms, and understanding of computers/networking can make pretty much give you a start no matter where you will go. I'm only 22 and with no degree, school is good knowledge but helps very little. All experience I've learned is on-site experience. I'm sitting right under the Director of Technology for my company and two years ago I didn't know jack shit about any of this infrastructure.

One semester away from finishing undergrad, BS - BA degree. Two years of finance and accounting in corporate america in the summers and also have worked in IT for the last 3 years and it's true you never learn until you are in a working environment with real world problems. Plan on getting a full time IT or tech related position that will pay for an MBA in a couple years after I graduate.

People get annoyed when I'm always around here to give my two cents here or there, but it's because I'm on the computer or my Blackberry 8-14 hours a day.
