Interested in stripping some weight, and was curious where I could find a set of aluminum subframes to replace my stamped/tubular steel ones. car is a 2001 A6 4.2Q 6MT.

Is that the subframe, the uprights or both? Any idea how much weight difference?

Having picked up both a steel and alum subframe I'd guess right now that the alum unit weighs in at about 25% less than the steel frame. so weight savings would be about 15-20 pounds as a guess.

The alum C5 subframes were installed on the S6 and RS6, and the rear alum subframes were installed on the S6 and RS6 avants only, so for the USA the only car with the rear alum subframe is the C5 S6.

The W8 is 4B0399313DG Dealer list price $674.00
The RS6/S6 front is 4B3399313H Dealer list price is $1463.00
The RS6/S6 Avant rear is 4B0505235AB or 4B0505235CC Dealer list price $1282.50

So would the W8 fit the A4/S4?

Th W8 rear subframe would not fit an A4/S4. It is designed like the A6 rear subframe.

Aside from the weight benefit, are the aluminum subframes any stiffer than the steel?

I'd be very interested in the measurements. I took some rough measurements on my C5 and compared it to a B5. The front subframe holes are in the same location. The distance back to the rear mounts (front subframe) appears to be the same.

My concern is the geometry for clearance on the oil pan. I've got a 2.7T C5. Knowing that the S4 B5 has the same engine would lead me to believe that the clearance is there. There might be a different subframe to clear the turbo oil return at the oil pan for the S4 2.7T. I'll have to look at part numbers. The bracket for the headlight ride height sensor might make it unique too...

Scotty by any chance did you happen to compare them? I hate to ask, I know running a business consumes a lot of free time, thank you for willing to take the time to do compare them.

Since this is the first thread that comes up when searching the subject I can verify that the front V8 subframe rear mounts are about 2.5" farther apart and slightly farther back than the V6... I realized this after I had the fronts threaded and was trying to mount. So the answer is some kind of crazy plate adapters to adjust the difference, or V8 body only. The mount holes on the body are in the middle of the surround point so just using some solid Derlin blanks and offset drill holes... which is what I was going to try as well.

Are you working with the steel or aluminum subframe for the V8?

    B6 / B7 front subframes are totally different to B5 / C5 non- V8.

C5 non-V8 use the same subframes as the B5, with 8D0 part number prefix.

swapping out to the aluminum subframe will just make the car more front heavy. There is a reason the front of the TT has been aluminized while the rear are still steel. Web Designing Training in Chennai | PHP Training in Chennai

    Resurrecting this now ancient thread.

Does anyone have accurate figures on the weight savings when replacing front and rear subframes on a 4.2 C5 with the RS6 versions?

Also, how much lighter is the RS6 rear diff, which is also alu.

Just wondering about making the old bus a little lighter and more nimble.

    Cheers.
