If I end up with a B7, I would prefer for it to be an Avant. However, they are still commanding quite a premium that will put most out of my price range (trying to stay under $30k, preferably more around $25k). If I find a nice B6 S4 Avant, I'd definitely consider one of those too. It also must be manual, of course, which also makes it harder to find one.
I was looking at B7 S4 Avants last month myself....in MT form they are hard as hell to find! So instead I bought an S5 and will keep my B5 Avant. :-P
I do remember seeing quite a lot of B6 manuals though, but the oil consumption and cam roller problems on those earlier V8s got me off the B6 wagon real quick. Now I just have carbon buildup to look forward to.

Oil consumption CAN be a problem with all the S4 V8's...not just the B6. And there are no cam roller issues. There are timing chain issues that are starting to manifest, though.
There are also oil consumption and carbon buildup issues with many FSI engines. Good luck with that S5.
The B5 is officially gone. It went to a good home though.
Yes, it is in good hands. I'm bob, the new owner. This is the first Audi I've owned. I come from the glorious world of oldschool rwd toyotas. I've always loved the b5 platform, and its a dream come true to finally own a s4 avant. I will be daily driving it until the turbos go, then I will start throwing money towards this beauty. Bodywork, paint, wheels ect are all coming in the near future. I probably won't be posting on the forum too oftenbut I will be doing plenty of research on the site because the Audi world is new territory for me. Here are a couple of my toyotas, I hope you enjoy and i look forward to being part of the audi community in the pacNW

Cam roller, cam follower....whichever. I know I read about some motors that had a destroyed follower. Even read through justincredible's engine tear-down thread where he discovered one. And oil consumption *can* be a problem? Ehh...this thread: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...pdate-12-03-11
That was enough to sway my decision. That and a friend of mine when I was living in PA/NJ last couple years had replaced both heads on his B6 a couple different times and still was having issues. Granted, another friend of mine out there also has one and has yet to have an issue....so I'm not saying it's all of them that are bound to fail. Just like ALL FSI V8s are indeed bound to get carbon build-up, but I can deal with a cleanse once in a while.
I did see too that several people have had issues with the chain tensioner and/or guide, as well.
Loving the hell out of the S5, really really happy with it. I actually looked at B8 Avants before ultimately deciding on the S5, but didn't want a Tip.
Cam roller != cam follower. I'm under the impression that the roller problem in that particular motor was a fairly isolated incident, or was a side effect from the chain guides failing, which is a more wide spread (although still doesn't affect everybody) issue. If you search for cam follower in the B7 A4 section you will see that it's a much more widespread issue (as in 90%+ of people), although at the same time it's an easy fix)
........I thought this thread was gonna turn sad with the sale of Capt. O's S4........yodabob: .......very interested in where you go with it from here; please keep us posted........

^^^ Will do streetsoffire! like I said, I have a lot of research to do still and Ill be using this forum mainly as a study guide to familiarize myself with the car for now. BUT, when I start work on it down the road Ill bring this thread back from the dead, keep it alive and post up the progress!!! Ideas are already brewing MUAHAHAA!
996 C4S eh? I have thought about them, but I think I would only do a 996 if it was a turbo. Now that I looks like my Avant is going to sell soon, I think I'm just going to hold out for a few years and buy a 997 Turbo.
I thought you were looking for a 930? What made you choose the blob eye P-car?
I went with the 996 over a 964/993 because the 996s just make a better daily driver than the air cooled cars do. More creature comforts, it will start in cold weather, that kind of stuff. Also, I got a stupid good deal on this car.
Nice pickup with the 996.........I guess I may be one of the few that likes the 996 over the 964 or 993 (especially for a car I will use often).........and it looks like you got a clean example.........and I'm not gonna lie; I am looking for a Benz for my next car, but after seeing this, I have been looking at P-cars in my cars.com search........

Congratulations on the new Audi. Welcome to the family!
Measure. Then re-measure. Then measure once more. Once you cut a hole in the hood, that's where the vent is going!
Also, cover the area you're cutting with painters tape. It will protect the paint and help keep it from chipping around the cuts.
And lay a towel or old blanket or something over the engine when cutting to catch all the little metal shavings so they don't get all over the engine bay.
I used a regular ol' recipricating saw with a metal blade on it. After cutting it, I sanded the edges down and put some primer on the bare metal to protect it.
^You'd probably go through a ton of blades. Maybe an excuse for you to buy another tool? Got my sawzall for ~$100 last year and it was one of my better tool purchases. So damn versatile.
