I've been hanging around the RS4 forums and read that they like to use Shell fuel to reduce carbon build up yada yada. Does this hold true for TFSI 2.0T motors also? I'm due for my first fill up soon.
Unfortunately, with Direct Injection engines, Shell V-Power fuel won't do a thing. Fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber, and carbon buildup is formed on the valves. Many people use seafoam to get rid of carbon buildup, but with mixed opinions regarding that.
AoA does recommend "top-tier" gas such as Chevron and Shell V-Power, but it honestly doesn't matter as long as you are using the correct octane.
I broker oil products and financial derivatives for a living and I can say without any hesitation that as long as you are staying with top-tier fuel, it's all the same (in fact, I can barely even state that top-tier means anything with full integrity). V-Power, "Nitrogen Enriched" gasoline, Techron, etc. are marketing gimmicks and they are entirely meaningless. What you need to be most concerned with is staying with retailers that you think maintain their ground tanks properly so that they avoid water build up (this is extremely important for gasoline containing Ethanol). I shy away from wholesalers (Costco, Wallmart, ETC) just because I don't trust that they police octane mixing well, but all of the major brands are A-OK.
I stick to Chevron and Shell just for peace of mind. Places such as AM/PM, and no name stations scare me too much. I am not that worried about Costco since they tend to maintain all of their brands well, but Walmart gas would scare the hell out of me after seeing their stores.

according to my mechanic, our chain driven TSFI B8 is different then the previous model years TFSI. we would have to simply wait and see if carbon buildup is an issue on our engines.
Biggest thing you can do to avoid build up is DRIVE the car. Fewer short trips, more time at temp. There's a guy names Viziers in the B7 forum. Just pulled his valve train at 115k and it looks pretty darn good. He drives hard and most of his driving is not short trips.
Quality fuel and low ash content oil are the other things you can do.

Remember that our engines were designed for the autobahns, not just stop-go traffic. Stories like this wouldn't surprise me. I have had a few friends with German makes that developed issues b/c they were babying the vehicles. Drive it like it was designed!

Hear hear - I know that the B8 has had the oild temps increased 10 degreed F on purpose to help combat carbon. Most people having the issues have been found to rarely get the car up to temp, doing daily communtes of a few miles and never to rarely any highway or long drives.
I just took mine over a few mountains on a long highway trip this weekend. Around town, I see 211 - 219 oil temps, going up a mountain pass, it was peaking 233, so temps up in this range will prevent the buildup by baking it off the intake valves.
Like a surgeon with a scalpel, my S4 is a precision instrument, with which I carve and dissect my way through traffic.
What's the 'right temp'? the midpoint on the temp gauge? I'm not sure how you can avoid that. It goes there after merely ~5 minutes of driving lightly.

Ryan, NWS4guy is refering to oil temprature, which he probally loged by using Vag-com. Not the coolant guage that is on the cluster.
Sunoco's 94 Octane supposed to be a bit better. Octane Boosters have the fuel burn better and hell I beat the heck out of the car every so often like anything it needs a good strech to keep things running good. I don't care what people say these cars wouldn't be made to move like this if they were not suppose to. I am shore the heat and running hard helps kill some of the stuff that gets caught sitting in the tank or oil or even on the valves in this case for the most part.
Only thing is you drive it hard you'll be working just as hard to get rid of that brake dust! FML.
Did I miss something in that list?? I don't see ExxonMobil or BP. I am kinda surprised at that.
Don't be. They did not join this group. The fact is, the profit margin on gasoline is very slim and it's something everyone needs. No point spending extra to join Top Tier for marginal difference in sales.
BTW, ExxonMobil has left the retail game already. All of their gas stations are run by independent owners as part of a franchise. Shell has already started to do the same. There are very few Shell operated gas stations left. All oil companies are slowly retiring old refineries because the environmental and financial cost to keep them running.

Shell is all over the place here in Houston. In fact, last weekend I drove by two Shell stations that were across the street from each other lol. That being said, the most convenient Top Tier station for me is now Texaco, so that's where I go most of the time. I do occasionally go a bit out of my way to get Shell tho.

Hey sorry to beat on a dead topic but who here is close to 40k on their B8s?
I am hitting 35k and wondering what a good indicator of possible build up would be? Also how could I work this so the dealer has to fix this because its unacceptable ?
I would love to get in there and see what its all about but from what I see so far the Carbon Build up is not much of an issue on these B8 I have talk to the Audi of Canada rep and said it is very minor not to the extent of the B7s. Then again every car is different, the fuel can be different on any given day you fuel up and such. So what to do!? Anyone take a peek at the valves around 40K yet?

For what it's worth, Blake P is over 40K miles I believe. He just recently had his car in for service for an intake issue and had them check for carbon buildup while he was in there and was told that there was NONE. Take that with a grain of salt, but it sure is encouraging!

Now did Blake P do anything special or just use any random 91 gas?

IMO, it's unlikely that the fuel will have any meaningful change on valvetrain carbon buildup on these DI engines. It's not like the fuel/air mixture flows over the intake valves like throttle body injection.

Either 91 or 93 I'm sure. Might wanna ask him to see for certain though.

Do you guys really shell out for 93 octane? I have not even seen any places around West LA that carries it. It must be pretty inconvenient to find. Or do you get it in tanks and do it at home?

It is available at almost every gas station in the midwest.

Yup- I'm financing rather than leasing, paying an extra $.20/gallon is worth the peace of mind.

Must not ever get out east? We're the weird ones out west by only carrying 91. Everywhere east of Texas pretty much has 87, 89, 93 and some like Sunoco regularly have 94. (and it's cheaper too)

WAY cheaper! And thank the good Lord! I'm already about to take out a mortgage to pay for this car, lol.

pfff..come to Canada.. 4.12$ a gallon! (and yes I know it is even more in EU/outside of NA)
not so bad here in s fl., believe it or not the price of gas went down here even after the oil spill in the gulf. Last fill up i paid $2.84 p/gal for 93 oct. usually i would pay over $3 a gal., thanks to a wholesale club i save alot more at the pump.
