    Rebuild a GT2871R

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So my brother decided that he would run his car with a giant exhaust leak in his flexpipe with the stock n75 on a uni file. He over spun the turbo and it wobbles like shit now and has massive shaft play and wont even build boost anymore. anyone know where a good place is to get it rebuilt and balanced? The car only was driven for 1 day btw and yes i am the same one who has been having problems with the install since december. Any help is greatly appreciated

    Thanks!

If it's wobbling, your shaft is toast. You will need a new CHRA.

What is a CHRA? and how expensive do you think a repair would be?

Center Hub Rotating Assembly. its everything between the compressor and turbine housings. repairs could cost close to or maybe even more than the price of a replacement turbo.

its unlikely, but you may be able to get it warranteed, since its new, and the failure wasnt FOD (foreign object damage).

Swap the stock oil line next time with at least a new one or a proper AN line, like i said before. The turbo was oil starved and died, it has nothing to do with the downpipe. A new CHRA from ATP is $600. You may be able to get them to warranty it. I wish i could find the video's of the 4 eliminators i killed. All in the same fashion, all due to oil starvation.

    bingo!

bout time someone gave this guy the right info. no exhaust leak(post turbo especially) will overspin your turbo.

and yes, you need a new CHRA. don't sell the current turbo, you need the housings to put on your new CHRA. or you could trash the current one and spend an extra $500 that you don't need to.

and you won't be able to do an HTA upgrade as someone up there pointed out. you either have to have a brand new turbo, or buy it from FP. they can't put a new wheel and cover on a damaged turbo. just won't work.(i realize that you didn't inquire about this. this info is more for everyone)

no, you can do it at home. just 6 bolts on each side that hold the covers on. just remove them and pull the covers off. you don't have to be gentle since the turbo is already thrashed. but this brings me to my next point is how do the inside of the housings look? when you pull them off look inside to see if the wheels have done any major damage. a couple little scrapes wont be a big deal. just hit them with a high grit or scotchbrite pad. if it's serious damage, like gouging, you might want to order a new compressor cover

before taking them off, make sure to mark them out so you know what the orientation is(how the turbo is clocked) for when you put them back on your new CHRA. and this is the time to be VERY gentle and precise as to not touch the wheels when putting the covers back on. you don't want to damage the new shaft/bearings/seals

Would it be good to advise him to get the new turbo professionally balanced after putting it together to avoid any further issues?

chra should come pre-balanced. Covers won't change the balance.

the CHRA is a complete unit. there is no bearings, seals, or anything like that to put together. it's a brand new rotating assembly from the manufacturer. in this case, Garrett. here's a pic.
