occ is up and running

so i had a custom oil catch can put in today at kmd and the install looks great. the only remaining space left in that engine bay fits the catch can perfectly and it looks like it belongs there. an occ is pretty straight forward so i cant really comment much more until i put a good amount of miles on. i did a full carbon cleaning that was finished on friday so the engine is nice and clean so we should be able to accurately measure the build up situation.

nope, no turbulence in the motor at all, everything seems like its running like normal.

I thought it was from the heat cycles as well but I saw a left over 08' last year in a show room and CF looked identical to the one in the pic...and mine on my car. I think it's a different hue they chose when manufacturing it? Who knows, I could be wrong but iirc the brand new RS4 CF covers matched mine in color.

Back on topic: Sweet!! It doesn't look out of place in the bay AND i'm looking forward to more reviews and feedback from you once you have racked some miles.

the bottom hose is venting back into the motor through the valve cover

Why not just let that one vent outside? I used to have a little breather filter on my Rx7 when i installed a catch can... Unless you are actually looking to get the vacuum?

Perhaps others can, but I can't quite make out all the plumbing changes; besides the addition of the catch can, what has changed? Also, if the basic crankcase ventilation system remains the same, where did you place the catch can - on the valve cover breather line upstream of the cyclonic oil separator?

Regardless, it looks good, I'll be very curious to see how it performs over the first 5k.

Will you have to empty the can so often? Or does it dump itself?

I believe it is a manual process(meaning we have to empty it), not sure on the frequency either. Someone will chime in I'm sure, I had these same questions and was about to ask.

yea, it is emptied manually, but as far as frequency of emptying it, no1 really knows as this is the first one to my knowledge on a rs4 so i guess ill let you guys know about that one haha. this motor needs the vacuum, putting on a breather would result in extreme turbulence and most likely a stall out

So you will also have to monitor the oil levels more closely now as the CC will pull some? How hard is your setup to remove the can and empty it? A chore or as simple as popping the hood and unscrewing the can?

emptying the can is as simple as loosening a clamp and taking it out, childs play haha. ill take some better pics a little later of the cc close up but there is a clear vertical line that shows you the level of contents within the can, so just every now and then ill take a peak under the hood when i check oil levels in the car or something like that.

Hmm that does sound like a possibility. We'll only know how much in X amount of miles once Rich has driven some more and starts to see the CC accumulate oil.

Good thing is that Rich uses his RS4 as a DD and will rack up miles fairly quickly to give us some good results. I on the other hand will take 1/2 a year to drive 5K miles lol.

Goodness man. Well fortunately for me I have a toyota pickup DD. 97 T100 with 320,000 original miles and still running strong with no problems, it's rediculous.

They are just sitting in his garage right now since he has his snow tires on. I think hes had them for a few months now, definitely from at least the early fall I think.

That looks awesome Rich. It actually looks really good on the RS4. I've seen them on other cars and they were iffy. Great choice, can't wait to see them in person once the weather gets better.

What were the specs on the btw? 19x9.5 ?

yea dave, 19x9.5 i personally dont like the rims off the car haha they fit strangely well on my car with the color schemes and what not, the barrels and insides of the spokes are black, its hard to see in the pics. imm gunna remove the intake manifold at around 5k, but i will constantly be checking oil levels in the can. at 500 miles i will crack open the can to see what if anything is inside

Oil consumption shouldn't change with a catch can. Instead of the oil going through the intake and being burned in the compression chamber you are catching it in the can and dumping it out manually. The presence of the can isn't going to increase or decrease how much oil is coming up through the PCV lines.

Nice install BTW! I plan to install one soon on my S4. There was a lot of oil in my intake the last time I had it off so a catch can should help remedy that problem.

VERY small update. because i was so impatient lol... we opened the catch can at kmd yesterday, i had put on 200 miles at that point. the catch can IS catching. we drained out a little bit so stay tuned

Ironic huh? Anyways, that is great news, hopefully it should catch all the oil buildup before it is recirculated.... I was talking to a buddy an d he suggested maybe removeing the EVAP canister, thinking that would probably help as well. Any insight?
