    Turn Headlights on with remote

Today it occurred to me that it would be nice if my headlights were to turn on when I unlock my car. Many times I feel this to be a convenience. The headlights can light my way when I'm walking to my car in the parking lot. I did a search and found this thread.....

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ght=headlights

This guy was asking about the headlights "flashing" which I agree would be bad for the ballasts. But I would like the headlights to turn on and stay on like my dome/map lights.

I have heard of the foglight mod where the module is modified by sodering to points in the module to allow the fogs to run WITHOUT the headlights. I'm guessing the same can be done to achieve what I want....is it feasible?

Im sure its feasible but have fun studying the wiring diagram in that mess to figure out how to get it done. It would be a nice mod tho!

I don't think it would be too hard. I think I would first find a power source that goes high when you unlock the car. For example the dome lights. Perhaps there is a better source, but it's late and that's all I can come up with. Then you hook up a relay so it would power up the headlights. You would probably want this whole system to be disabled when the key is on - so flicking on the dome light manually doesn't mess with the headlights, but that shouldn't be too hard.

Well, that's all I got without looking at the diagrams. Ah, its late...

The part that turns on the dome light when you unlock the car is a separate power from the one that lets you turn it on w/ the key out. I think it would be fine! I might have to try it.

Re: Turn Headlights on with remote

I would like to do this too. Is there somewhere on the ECU (or anywhere for that matter) that is specifically a "remote" line for using the fob.

I can do this cheaply using a signal from the dome light, and a latching ebay fob unit, along with some custom circuitry. Only activate headlight relay module if interior dome light is on, and then use the second fob to turn the lights on. This only lets the headlight fob do anything if the dome light is on.

Or I can take a little micro controller and hook it up to a cheapo ebay fob like stated above and just use it for latching on/off and then program the micro to turn the lights off after a few mins.

Or the second with the only if the dome light is on feature from the first.

But...then again I am electrical/computer engineering senior...each way would cost <50$ and not much time. the first one could be wired up in a matter of hours if even that long.

    Thanks for the idea

    -John

BTW if this is the case, but just with 2 power wires to the light and nothing to limit current flow, you would run into the same problem since reverse current is flowing into the secondary power line (in each case when the remote wire is primary and the main power is primary), just install a 1n4001 (I think) diode onto each power line and it will still work the same way (minus around .7 volts maybe, from the silicon juntion in the diode) and then you could install it this way. And then install a capacitor (after the relay) for the fading effect!

I thought it was just my battery!! lol

About the headlight... How often do you walk to your car at night? Something like: if you hold the unlock button would turn on the lights, but i'm not convinced it would be very beneficial to me. Only because I rarely walk to my car at night.

    Garage FTW!!! :)
