I would like to do this too. Is there somewhere on the ECU (or anywhere for that matter) that is specifically a "remote" line for using the fob.
I can do this cheaply using a signal from the dome light, and a latching ebay fob unit, along with some custom circuitry. Only activate headlight relay module if interior dome light is on, and then use the second fob to turn the lights on. This only lets the headlight fob do anything if the dome light is on.
Or I can take a little micro controller and hook it up to a cheapo ebay fob like stated above and just use it for latching on/off and then program the micro to turn the lights off after a few mins.
Or the second with the only if the dome light is on feature from the first.
But...then again I am electrical/computer engineering senior...each way would cost <50$ and not much time. the first one could be wired up in a matter of hours if even that long.
Thanks for the idea

And then install a capacitor (after the relay) for the fading effect!
