help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i need help with getting correct timing.
everything's at TDC, used cam locking bar and crank locking pin, all cam 4 shafts are at TDC also.
but i'm getting no compression at all.
valves are not leaking, rings are not leaking, i checked it while heads were off the block, they didn't leak fluid through valves for a few days.
what could i have done wrong?
and engine's completely out of the car.

How are you turning the motor over to build compression while it is out of the car ?

you're not going to get an accurate reading with that. You need a hand-held starter. Plugs should be in except for the cylinder you're testing when doing a compression test.

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

I am no Audi god, but I have a lot of experience working on other cars. I have found that you can not simply draw in enough air to build compression by just turning the motor over by hand that slowly. It has to be spun over faster than that using something with some cranking power .. like a starter. The same principals apply as to why you cannot start your car by hand (unless you have a model T).

It sounds like you should be doing a leak down test using compressed air in the cylinder to see how fast the air escapes or holds.

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

i thought hand-turning gives some reading.
i'll try to get the leak down test.
if not leak down test, how would you test the compression when engine's completely out?
put flywheel and starter motor back on and override the starter?

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

If the cam marks and crank mark are lined up then your car should be timed. Turn it over by hand a few times and see if your pistons are tapping valves. If they're not then you're safe to crank your motor.

edit: just saw motor is out. What is stopping you from putting it back in?

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

def. cylinders are not tapping valves.
so put starter motor on and crank it?
or could i use impact gun to crank it?
i haven't put valve covers back on yet and has no oil in it.
is it safe to do so or should put the cover back on and put some oil in it first?

you'd need a powerfull impact gun. the starter on our cars are rated for 1.4KW.

Put the stock starter back on for compression test. I would put oil in it too.

Or perhaps you can use on of those mythical 'hand held' starters that someone mentioned above. Only if you are talking about an RC car or a Model T. Maybe even an ultralight ?

that's the cheap one btw. If you build motors or do crankshaft dynos often it's nice to have.. otherwise try to rent one instead.

That is not a 'hand held' starter. It is designed to be bolted in.

You could probably hold it up to the fly wheel and give it juice, only too see it fly across the room or rip your arm off.

Prehaps you were thinking of a hand held solenoid? If so, starters and solenoids are two completely different things.

no, that's what I was thinking when I mentioned it, but after looking at it again it looks like I got confused at some point from something I saw on youtube or similar.

I'd say no reading at all. Starter turns the engine at a few hundred rpms if not more. You're going to get about 3 with a ratchet. As long as you have the timing marks lined up, or a cam lock bar in place and your crank marks are lined up you're fine. Turn it over by hand a few times and put it back in. If your that worried about your work get the trans and starter bolted up and give it a spin.

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

thanks for all the help, but which one should i more trust...lol

    no reading or some reading?
and when i looked at the pistons while heads were out, i just don't understand how it can be off by 180 degrees off as someone said.
it's has to be 360 degrees off if it is cause crank locking pin has to go into that little knob on the crank and everything would be back to where they were before.

so put tranny back, put some oil, and crank it...?

Re: help with timing. no compression in all cylinders.

im having a hard time understanding 1) why is the engine out in the first place 2) why are you trying to get a compression reading by cranking the engine by hand. if everything is at tdc (you know this for sure) and your cams are lined up properly (iirc the cam tool will only go in one way) then you should be good, and you're wasting time trying to get a legit reading as far as compression when turning engine by hand.. its like installing a super aggressive hotrod cam and then wanting the engine to idle smoothly.. not going to happen..

put flywheel and starter motor, then overrode the starter motor.
    i finally got compression...
now i know hand turning won't give any compression reading.
and since i got 120+psi in all 6, now i also know normal valves does leak, and you can hear it leaking air through intake valves when turn crank with a wrench...
    thanks for help guys.
