    B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Need some help with recoding. My attempts have failed to recode my spare engine ecu from automatic to manual transmission. I have a full version of VCDS and genuine vagcom cable. I have tried to recode it from 06251 to 06001 and it just reverts back after each attempt. I have tried this with the car running and off with just the key turned to ACC. People tell me there is a login code I need from the dealer. If this is true can anyone help me with this process. Thanks

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    The spare one isn't chipped, is it? I know some are unable to recode an ecu after a chip has been soldered in.

    I was able to recode my APR chipped and non chipped ECU's without issue. But I have an '01 (ME7). I hope you can figure it out.

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    I bought it on Ebay and it was not chipped when I first tried to recode. It is for a 97 A4 1.8T AT. My car is a MT with APR stage 3. I tried to recode before I sent it to APR to get a chip soldered in with no luck. They tried to recode for me and had the same problem. So now I am stuck with another stage 3 ECU coded for an AT instead of MT. My present one is failing.

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    01 - Engine

    Coding - 07

    ECU coding is pretty straight forward and not too many options for this. The only real thing to change is whether the engine is mated to an automatic transmission or a manual transmission or if equipped with ABS or ESP. Coding is as follows.

    00XXX - The first two digits apply to the country.
    *16 is the only available option for those in the USA

    XX0XX - The third digit codes the ECU for what drive and options you have
    *0 states FWD with ABS
    *2 states Quattro with ABS
    *5 states FWD with Anti-Slip Regulation/Electronic Stability Program (ASR/ESP)
    *7 states Quattro with ESP

    XXX0X - The fourth digit states which transmission you are equipped with
    *0 is for 5 speed manual transmission
    *5 is for 01V automatic transmission

    XXXX0 - The last digit will state which vehicle the ECU is installed in.
    *1 states installed in Audi A4

    EX: A manual, Quattro A4 in the US should be 16201 or 06201

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    Fellas, thanks for all the quick replies. I have front wheel drive. 06001 is the code on my installed ecu. The one I am trying to recode is for auto tranny. I tried all the procedures in soft coding and it still won't save the changes. Does anyone know where I can get the login code or sku code that the dealer usually uses to unlock the ECU. I have only heard about these codes and have never used them except for the one that is on the ROSS tech page.

    The dealer wants to charge me 125 bones to recode my ECU. I know there is someone that is a VAGCOM ninja out there that can help me out. I don't think the workshop code will unlock the ECU. This is an old ECU from 97 without an immobilizer. It is low tech ME3.8

    NUNYA you are the heat. I just used that workshop code and it worked. Now I have a new problem. Our friends at APR neglected to solder in the new resistor on the ECU board that makes the ECU work with the stage 3 tune and injectors. They did the same thing when I sent my first ECU in when I bought the kit originally. So unfortunately this event has happened before. Thanks again for all the help. This is a great forum.

    wait what exactly did you do? That rosstech link doesnt seem to say anything about reprogramming from auto to manual? unless i am missing something

    I tried reprogramming a manual 2000 atw ECU for use as an Auto 2000 atw ECU 2 weeks ago and couldnt do it, the coding kept reverting back to the original, so i would love to hear the procedure and steps you used to pull it off. Thanks!

    With car off and key in on position:
    Plug in vag-com
    Go to engine
    Coding/recode
    enter 06251 for quattro auto or 06051 for FWD auto
    shop code 65535
    do it.

    I have only done it the other way, auto ecu to manual. But i assume it works the same.

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    for some reason those codes wouldnt take /\/\

    my ecu starts with 07 instead of 06 (i am assuming its something to do with it being a 2000 atw ecu)

    the only thing i can change is the 3rd digit. (from quattro to fwd) nothing else will stick, even with the shop code provided above... hmmm... odd

    i tried switching my auto to a manual just to see if it was a one way kind of thing, but still it wouldnt work... maybe i am doing something wrong

    Re: B5 A4 ECU Recoding

    pretty certain you cant recode a 512kb ecu from auto to manual or vice versa. the maps just arent in the ecu. the ecu has to be reflashed with the correct bin. so if you have an auto you need to convert to a manual ecu, it needs to be flashed with a manual gearbox bin.

    if you need your auto ecu flashed to a manual, contact me via pm.

    512kb. dbc cars have less maps to start with though than dbw cars. maybe auto/manual cars dont have different maps for auto or manual so it doesnt matter how its coded. im not really sure.

    did you try logging into the ecu first before recoding?

    press login and type 01283 or 11463

    then try to recode the ecu.. just a thought not positive if it will allow u to make the change

    Question BOSCH ABS ECU 5.3 - 8E0 614 111 A & 8E0 614 111 AP - How do you determine the login c

    Hi,

    I'm trying to figure out how to determine the login code I should use for the replacement ABS ECU Module which I acquired from the breaker yard.
    The unit I have is 8E0 614 111 A and the replacement unit is 8E0 614 111 AP. I've been promised that the two modules are in fact interchangeable even though they aren't identical.

    Previously with the broken module in place I could not talk to any of the controller modules in the car such as engine or transmission. The broken module had the issue with the internal wiring having vibrated loose and causing fault code 01203 to be recorded (Electrical connection between ABS and Instrument Cluster 03-10 - No Signal - Intermittent).
    I ended up breaking the unit open and applying a liquid silver epoxy solution to "solder" the loose silver connections back onto the gold plates and this did fix the module but unfortunately I forgot to apply the superglue to the fix to set it in place and it has now worked loose again with the vibrations.
    Hereís the link to how to repair the loose wiring connections:
    http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=1757414

    I tried to make a more permanent fix by performing a low-temp soldering job which worked but I think I bumped some of the tiny gold wiring connections adjacent to the problem area and I think these are now shorting which causes the module to not respond at all anymore Ė eish she is broken!

    Anyhow, moving on - I've installed the new module I got from the breaker yard into the vehicle and it definately works because I can talk to it through the VAG-COM 409.1 software and KKL 409.1 serial cable and the (!) warning light is no longer on and only the ABS warning light is on. The brakes have pressure and I can talk to all the other modules in the car again.

    However, I think the ABS warning light is on because there are existing fault codes from the previous vehicle still stored in the replacement ABS ECU's memory and I cannot clear them. Well that is to say, I can clear them out of the VAG-COM fault listing box but when I re-enter into the control module and query the faults they re-appear. Also, when I clear the faults the ABS warning light stay on regardless.

    The faults listed in the replacement module's memory are as follows:
    00285 - ABS Wheel speed sensor: Front right (G45)
    30-00 - Open or short to B+
    18034 - Powertrain data bus: Missing message from TCU
    P1626 - 35-00 - -
    18258 - Powertrain data bus: Missing message from ECU
    P1850 - 35-00 - -

    I'm lead to believe that the problem is in fact that the software coding might be incorrect and I need to first change the software coding before I can clear the fault codes.
    Specifically, the Powertrain data bus related faults appear to be related to incorrect transmission errors which would make sense because my vehicle is an automatic and the vehicle from which the replacement module was taken was a manual.

    My old module's software coding looks like this:
    Controller: 8E0 614 111 A
    Component: ABS/EDS 5.3 QUATTRO
    Coding: 0273004284
    Shop #: BB 24334

    The replacement module from the breaker yard coding looks like this:
    Controller: 8E0 614 111 AP
    Component: ABS/ASR 5.3 FRONT
    Coding: 00033
    Shop #: WSC 00000

    The first difference that I guess should concern me is that the Component specification reads ASR 5.3 FRONT instead of EDS 5.3 QUATTRO which I guess would mean that the ECU is designed for front wheel drive vehicles and not a Quattro.
    My hope is that when I change the software coding of the module this will change as well?

    So, forging ahead with the software coding...
    - I'm not sure how to change the software coding from: 00033 to the long coding of the old module: 0273004284?

    - I've tried changing the software coding of the replacement ECU module to a short software coding that would suit my vehicle: 00031 but the coding simply remains 00033.

    - I've thought that maybe I need to login to the replacement ECU module before I try to recode but I cannot login - I keep getting the login error. Perhaps I'm generating the wrong login code?
    This is the vehicle tag for the vehicle from which the replacement ABS module was extracted:

    Iíve used the ELSAWIN content to find out that for this vehicle the AWT engine is a 1.8 litre petrol (gasonline) 5 cylinder and the transmission is manual.

    As I understand it from various blog postings I need to know the following information in order to determine the login code and software coding:

    LOGIN: 07575 based on the following calculation...

    0?xxx: Chassis
    0x?xx: Brakes
    0xx?x: Engine
    0xxx?: Transmission

    0?xxx: Chassis
    5 = Audi A8 (4D)
    7 = Audi A6 (4B)
    9 = Audi A4 (8D) / VW Passat (3B)
    0x?xx: Brakes
    3 = FNRG-60 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LA/1LG]
    4 = FN2/HP2 (Dual-Piston) [PR-1LX]
    5 = FN3 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LB]
    6 = C54 (Lucas) [PR-1LZ]
    0xx?x: Engine
    5 = 4/6/8 Cyl. Diesel
    7 = 4/5 Cyl. Gasoline
    9 = 6/8/12 Cyl. Gasoline
    0xxx?: Transmission
    3 = Manual with Low Range (only Audi A6 Allroad)
    5 = Manual
    7 = Automatic (01N/01V)
    9 = Multitronic (01J)
    The Software coding is also confusing me a bit as Iím seeing conflicting information from various sources:
    Iíve collated multiple different posts including those from the Ross-tech wiki to try and create a single reference for myself:

    This seems to be most relevant to the current replacement ECU moduleís coding but Iím not sure itís correct because the coding should be 00022 but itís actually set to 00033 which seems incorrect?
    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...lroad_%284B%29
    000?x: Engine
    0 = Gasoline Engine 2.4l-2.8l (without CAN-Databus)
    1 = Diesel Engine
    2 = Gasoline Engine 1.8T
    3 = Gasoline Engine 2.4l-2.8l (with CAN-Databus)
    000x?: Transmission
    0 = Manual Transmission (012) (without CAN-Databus)
    1 = Automatic Transmission (01V) (with CAN-Databus)
    2 = Manual Transmission (01E) (with CAN-Databus)
    3 = Multitronic (01J) (with CAN-Databus)
    3 = Automatic Transmission (01V) (without CAN-Databus)
    Then thereís this coding which I think is for vehicles with ESP?
    http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...BS/EDS/ASR/ESP)
    0?xxx: Chassis
    4 = Audi A4 (8D) / VW Passat (3B)
    6 = Audi A6 (4B)
    7 = Audi A6 Light Armored
    8 = Audi A8 (4D)
    0x?xx: Brakes
    1 = C54 (Lucas) [PR-1LZ]
    2 = FN3 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LB]
    3 = FN2/HP2 (Dual-Piston) [PR-1LX]
    4 = FNRG-60 (Teves/ATE) [PR-1LA/1LG]
    5 = 2FNR 42 AL 17" (PR-1LL)
    6 = 2FNR 42 AL 18" (PR-1LJ/1LP)
    0xx?x: Engine
    5 = 4/6/8 Cyl. Diesel
    7 = 4/5 Cyl. Gasoline
    9 = 6/8/12 Cyl. Gasoline
    0xxx?: Transmission
    3 = Manual with Low Range (only Audi A6 Allroad)
    5 = Manual
    7 = Automatic (01N/01V)
    9 = Multitronic (01J)
    Is there anywhere one can find a definitive LOGIN and SOFTWARE CODING tables as I think Iím trying to use the login tables for the vehicle with ESP and the software coding for a non-ESP vehicle?

    As an aside Ė one can actually buy an official repair kit for the Bosch ABS ECU module:

    One further question - VAG-COM 409.1 only allows software coding of 00000 to 65535 so how does one enter the software coding of 0273004284 to recode the replacement ABS ECU module?

    hey, i wana bring this thread back to life with some questions regarding ABS/EDL/ASR Pumps.

    Making an upgrade like using an ABS/EDL pump on a ABS only A4 B5 the EDL will work wonderfully without any modifications, it just needs an extra (optional) wire to the climate control for the brake pad heat wear protection system from extra skipping in the snow or whatever, not doing this will only give an error in vag-com, but not a problem.

    But what would it involve using an ABS/EDL/ASR Pump?

    Cars that had ABS/EDL compatible pomps for my car for example are:

    AUdi A4 FWD B5 '95-'01 with ABS/EDL
    Passat FWD '97-'05 with pumps 8e0614111b or new code 8e0614111F
    Audi a6 C5 FWD cars
    Skoda superb 2002 with the new pump code 8e0614111F

    Ofcourse i`ll have to look for a car in that range with ASR also, preferably an Audi :p with FWD .

    Would ASR require any extra wiring? I think it will surelly require re-coding of the ECU to use ABS/ASR...but i bet that`s easy with VAG to find out.

    Does anyone have a schematic or something related to this?
    Would it be possible?

    Bumping this old thread. For some reason, my 01 ECU will not recode to manual.
    The code in there is 07500 and it needs to be 06201. When I try to change the workshop code, it still reverts to 07500 after I check it again.
    Any ideas? CTAPP tuned ECU

    Chris, for a 2001 the first 2 digits will be 16, not 06. The coding won't take if it isn't a valid coding for that ECU part number. Try 16201 (AWM, quattro, 5MT, without ESP).

    Just tried it out using 16201, no luck. Tried changing the workshop code to 65535, no luck either. Im thinking this is why my RPM's still flare up when disengaging the clutch. Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Hmm. If the current coding is 07500, maybe try 07201, or 07200, or 07000. The 07 prefix is a puzzler, so maybe you should try and leave that part alone and just change the other ones.

    Also, have you already recoded the cluster and the ABS? I can't remember the specifics, but when I was recoding stuff I was having problems because I did it out of order. One or more of the modules wouldn't recode for me until I did the others. Mine has ESP, so that may have something to do with it.

    Yeah, I think so. That 07500 coding is weird so I googled it. It appears to Jetta coding (the horror!). You're probably getting some mad wheel spin with that coding, so this should be corrected at once!

    Anyway, my guess is that it has to do with CTAPP doing shared ME7 development with the transverse 1.8T ECU's (ie: 2 birds with one stone). So you may need to use Jetta coding rituals (AWP engine code, perhaps) to make it happen. This is all just guesswork on my part, though. I'm not familiar with CTAPP stuff by any means.

    I ran across this thread. It seems like 07500 should be the right coding for a manual Jetta anyway:
    http://forums.fourtitude.com/showthr...recode-mk4-ecu

    Just curious, what ECU part number shows up in vag-com?

    I wonder if the Jetta coding affects my car/performance

    Im starting to think this is why I have the code: Powertrain missing from....ABS controller (I didn't have this code with the previous PES ecu, and I got this code once I put in the TAPP ecu)

    So it looks like 07500 is for a manual jetta, and 07550 is for an auto jetta. So it seems like its the right code for manual.

    Looks like this guy had the exact same issue, also had the ABS code:

    Unfortunately his issue wasn't solved either.

    A Turbo Jetta is going to have ASR, which your ABS module does not have (we don't need it because we have actual traction). The ASR is basically going to have the same higher level ABS>ECU communication that you would have if you had ESP in your A4. Without ASR/ESP you have "dumb" ABS module (the less communication variant). Your ECU is coded for the "more communication variant", hence the DTC that you have.

    *Again, I'm not an expert on these aftermarket tunes and such, but this is my best speculation as to what is causing your issue.

    I would talk to CTapp about it.

    It seems like mostly everyone with a eurodyne ecu (TT, A4, etc) has this issue.
    So since it is coded for manual, I wonder why my CC mod isnt working/cutting throttle.
    Does it placement of how far/sensitive the clutch sensor make a big difference?

    So I just installed a CH AWM ECU into my ATW 5spd with no ESC after adding the VVT and WB02 sensor. I changed the coding on the ECU to a 16201 from it's original Automatic coding. I was wondering if I need to change my WSC too and what the WSC does in relation to the software coding. My current value is 06435.

    Also I am getting P1650 code right now. Is there a CANBUS wiring change between 00 and 01 for the instrument cluster that is causing this?
