    Autospeed GT2860R (Garrett pn 707160-5) build on my '00 widebody S4. It's been 8 mo's

I bought this car last year with full intentions of doing something more than K04's on it. WMS's laser S4 project with ASP GT's is why I decided to go with the ASP kit. I took pics of everything so far and figured I'd post on here for you guys to see. After seeing all the build threads, it seems like GTs are the new K04s.:)

Due to tons of pics, please don't quote this entire post in your reply.

    Here's the turbo data:
    http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...R_707160_5.htm

Here's a pic of the car in Long Island, NY the day I bought it (Nov, 08). Here's the former owner sitting in it one last time.:( It had a 6k mile AWE stage 3 kit.

May 3, 2009; Started pulling the engine.

May 7, 2009; AWE stage 3 kit I sold to help finance new kit.

May 24, 2009; Very new AWE flywheel and clutch, replaced with clutchmaster twin FX850.

May 30, 2009; cleaning up the engine.

June 4, 2009; removed stock heads. Took them up to ASP for install of inconel exh valves, valve seat grind, slight porting, Ti retainers and stiffer springs. Also new valve guides and stem seals. I'm using new 2.8 intake cams.

July 14, 2009; Received new pistons from WMS.

August 13, 2009; Received pistons back from Calico coatings.

November 14, 2009; Tore block down getting it ready for the machine shop.

December 3, 2009; Received ASP downpipes back from Calico Coatings.

December 16, 2009; Brought block home from machine shop. They bored 0.060" over, balanced/installed crank, forged rods and new JE pistons.

December 17, 2009; Started to reassembled the block.

December 22, 2009; continued engine assembly.

December 24, 2009. Continued engine work. Installed newer style valley cover, does better job of keeping oil out of pvc system.

December 31, 2009; Received bunch of new parts.

January 1, 2010; Worked on installing heads and other parts.

January 2, 2010; Timing belt install.

    January 3, 2010; Clutchmaster FX850 install.

    January 4, 2010; Turbo install.

January 9, 2010; test fit inlet pipes. Yes, the pink STI coils will be replaced.:)

That's where I am right now..

They are coated. ASP has them done with a silver thermal coating.

Calico coatings in NC offers black and silver.

    Edit: I'm in Norfolk.

    Damn americans lol.

Anyway, I'd also like to know if those sti coils work - are they exactly the same? If so, why bother changing them? I'm guessing previous owner replaced them cos he had to?

Also, what exhaust manifold is that? Looks nice; but that merging piece looks abit questionable in the flow design... probably good though (anyway, would most likely be better than stock).

don't really need them.. stock coils that don't die because they have 100+K have yet to see a limit to their design that I'm aware of.

    lol SHAWEET..

btw if you need coils, I've got some lying around you could have.. just minus postage.

i really dig your bad-ass (and throroughly protected) project. one question so far ... why did you opt to use only the intake cams?

you know something, you got me on that one ...

i think you just gave me an "A-Ha"-moment though because i've been gathering information on cams lately and i've only seen one set of specs on the exhaust cams. so i'd say you're probably right.

How far are you from Richmond? I'll let you know when I go up to dinwiddie dragstrip sometime in the spring. I plan on driving up on a Saturday test-n-tune and make a pass early.. before someone dumps oil on the asphalt.

2 hours from Richmond, 4 from you, so I would definitely ride out there and watch it run... heck, maybe even do a pass myself.

Nice Dave! Glad to see it coming together finally!

Will be cool to see the differences between a 2.8 GT2860RS car and a 2.8 GT2871R car!

You won't.. because I don't have either one. I have GT2860R, but not with the "S" at the end. The "S" is for expanded flow capacity over the non-S but the main physical difference is the turbine housing of the R is allegedly easier to fit in smaller spaces.

By the way, I googled and realized the exact same part number of my 707160-5 turbos were installed oem on nissan skyline R34's with N-1 engines. The main difference being the skylines used internal wastegates. Autospeed weld plugs the holes in the turbine housings for using external wastegates.

Here's the compressor map of a GT2860RS "disco potato" The strange thing is Garrett apparently didn't feel the need to map it at higher pressures. I know the WMS laser car ran much more than 2.5 PR on them without blowing up.:)

    Here's the map of my GT2860R "p/n 707160-5"
