clicking sound when light braking or coasting -- not during hard braking or accel??..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i need your help.. i have searched, but minimal success..

i just started hearing a "clacking" / "clicking" sound on the A4 (in sig)..
    - at 1st i only heard it when light braking..
    - now i can also hear it when coasting (at any speed)..
    - noise goes away when med-hard braking and when accelerating..
    - sounds like it is coming from the front..
    - varies with speed..

originally i thought it was the front brakes - salt or crud or something not seated right..
i lightly pulled on the e-brake (while lightly braking), and it did not change -- rules out the rear brakes..

    brakes??.. axle??.. bearing??.. CV??.. _______??..

for reference it has 62k on the clock..

    any ideas / suggestions??..

Sounds very much like cv joints or front swaybar attachment hardware failure to me.

If you don't want to go up on jacks, you can turn your wheels full tilt both ways and look at the outer joints one at a time. Usually they go first since they're the most stressed.

P.S. you didn't happen to run over any branches or anything recently did you?

i thought a CV was mainly or initially heard and full turn??.. but actually i am thinking either CV or bearing..

anyone know how much a CV or wheel bearing job is??..

    thanks!

Lol. On an iPhone, the C and the L look like a D in the title of the thread. It looks like "dicking sound".

it even looks like a "dicking" on my 22" monitor!

i guess its not really a "clicking", more of a "clacking" or even just a cyclical rubbing sound..

"click" & "clack" are the Tappet Brothers on "Car Talk".

As far as the issue, I let my cv join on my old beater civic go so far that it made that sever clacking noise regardless of whether I turned the wheels or not. It even did it during acceleration.

BTW, did you turn your wheels full tilt either way and visually check near the insides of the wheels yet? Obviously you'd have to do this one wheel at a time and MUST get out of the car to look!!!

Re: clicking sound when light braking or coasting -- not during hard braking or accel

didnt get a chance to pull a wheel over the wknd, but did some driving around with my dad.. we're thinking rotor now.. no noise at full turn doing circles in a parking lot (L or R).. so CV seems unlikely..
though i dont feel anything in the pedal (yet), but light braking is the biggest noise contributor..
rotors are pretty new, but i did beat them a bit for 2 months in the fall.. oddly warping is only happening now.. perhaps i caused a bit of a thermal stress in the fall and this cold weather is amplifying it..

Is it your brake pads rattling in the caliper?

    hey Chris..

yeah, i really need to pull the wheel and check out the brakes, but its been really cold here.. what causes a pad to start rattling after its been fine for months??..

i just picked up a AZ calendar mostly since my twin was in there.. great photography (of the entire return trip)..

i've been keeping a list of the Red USP Avant with a 1.8T/6spd.. please keep me posted on yours.. i've only been able to locate 7 in North America.. 2 of them are now in Canada..

My vote is for the bearings. I had the click, click, click... had the left one changed (got the bearing kit from mjmautohaus) and it was gone. The car seemed to run smoother too.

I will be doing the right one soon

i finally got a chance to pull both front wheels.. poked around and everything looked fine, but the top of the heat shield was a bit close to the rotor.. so i bent it back and the noise is gone.. or could have been some crud that freed up..

Re: clicking sound when light braking or coasting -- not during hard braking or accel

Is it a single click on the left and single click on the right or continuous clicking during light braking? I'm getting a single pop on each side during light braking at lower speeds.

    mine was a continuous clicking..

single click could be lose sub-frame bolts..

I'm having this same issue that just started today. I'm hoping its just my rotor shields as well.

the answer for me was heat shields.. or it could have been some crud somewhere that was freed after pulling the wheel..
so anyway i pulled both front wheels and the top of the heat shield was a bit close to the rotor, so i bent it back a bit.. i poked around and everything else looked fine..
    but the noise is gone..

it was also the 1st time i used my wheel hanger from Winston that i got for xmas -- handy little piece..

bump... apologies for it, but I have been having this problem for a few weeks now. However, the interesting thing is that is doesn't happen until the car is warmed up and I've stopped and started a handful of times. What gives there? It is also in the passenger rear wheel area. I get a click what seems like every rotation under light to moderate braking. although when I am almost to a stop it seems more like a creaking noise. I haven't had a chance to take a look at my wheel, but I also haven't seen anyone with a situation exactly the same as mine.

It is also important to mention my brakes were replaced about three thousand miles ago a few days before I purchased the car.

I'm guessing it's the (inner?) pads moving. They lightly touch the rotors. When you accelerate.brake the rotor pushes the pads forward in the caliper and 'cling'.

I figured that the pad is just loose, the only thing that hangs me up is why it only does it once they're warm?
