So, back in the day, I had a B5 A4 which I loved very dearly. It was a great car that I have a lot of fond memories of (think high school and early college and use your imagination to think of what a 16-20 year old does in a car). I had a moment of weakness and sold it after my freshman year. In tribute, here she is below and more pictures can be found here: http://picasaweb.google.com/knecht.alex/OldAudi#

the plate for most of its life was "KNAUDI" as a combination of my last name and "audi"

her in her winter/blacked out mode:

Now, four years after selling the A4 (and after driving two Infinitis, an FX35 and a G35 coupe, you can see the coupe here: http://picasaweb.google.com/knecht.alex/G35#), I bought my dream car, a stage three B5 S4

My ongoing album will be kept here: http://picasaweb.google.com/knecht.alex/S4#).

an update. car is in the shop for CV boots, aux coolant pump, control arms, and tranny rebuild. Yes, the bill is incredibly high.

    Here are some pictures:

coolant had leaked from the failed aux coolant pump

    torn CV boot

Ready to rip CV boot (wasn't vital to replace but figured I might as well do it before I drive 10,000 miles through the winter)

Control arm bushing just gone and this was the case all around:

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

update for early November: transmission has been back in for 2 weeks and is perfect. This past weekend did the following work:
-oil and filter change (Mobil 1 0w-40 Euro Blend and OEM oil filter)
-scrapped the K&N filter the previous owner had on for a clean OEM filter (K&N was plain disgusting)
    -new wipers
-10mm spacers in the front courtesy of ECS (this may be changing to 12.5mm in front and the 10mms moving to the rear because the rears look too tucked for my taste <** Nah, didn't want to pony up another $85 for spacers from ECS)
    -RS4 reps with Blizzaks
-finally got the radio removed and installed a Dice iPod adapter which I ran to the glove box

    obligatory porn:

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

Dec 2nd: Changed both gear oil and rear differential fluids.

I used 2 quarts of Redline MT-90 and 1 quart of Redline MTL and mixed them to create a nice cocktail for the gear oil for the transmission. The rear diff got 2 quarts of MT-90. The rear diff fluid definitely looked original (~100k miles old) complete with little metal slivers and all. The oil from the tranny only had ~1000 miles on it after my rebuild but wanted to switch it out after the break in and wanted a higher performance oil in there as well.

Here's a pic of us doing it purely for entertainment value:

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

December 8th 2009: The clutch master cylinder was headed down the path of no return. The symptoms were frequent locking out of reverse and 1st gear, having to pump the clutch pedal to get car into gear, and have very little clutch pedal travel (this I actually liked a whole lot and wish I could replicate as a feature, basically the clutch travel was scaled down to 1/4 of the normal movement, it was REALLY nice for awhile as it got rid of the notorious Audi high clutch engagement, now I have to get used to driving it with normal clutch pedal travel again). So despite my love for the new clutch character, having to push the car backwards out of parking spots in public got old really quick.

So my shop (Ferris Automotive of Warrenton, VA, whom I could not speak more highly of, they did my tranny rebuild, CV boots, control arms, and aux water pump all perfectly) got the work done in a day. I threw a new fuel filter (I had it sitting around for a weekend when I could do it myself) in the car and told them to knock that out for me as well. So a new clutch master cylinder and a fuel filter later, the car is ready for my road trip next week from DC-->Northern IL-->Pittsburgh-->DC.

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

December 28th 2009: The ~2,000 mile trip went relatively well. Had to deal with a massive DC snowstorm, more snow in Pittsburgh, more snow in IL, and then an ice storm in IL as I was leaving. Quattro and my blizzaks made the drive almost effortless even on the unplowed PA turnpike at 4am.

The only problem that cropped up was on my last day (yesterday). I parked outside overnight after all day rain. The temperature dropped from 45 to 20 overnight which resulted in a frozen parking brake. Had to get heat into the brake to get it to let go. It's always a character building experience with a B5 S4.

I also managed to wash/polish/wax the car when I had access to my parent's garage in IL. Well when I say I washed the car, I mean I paid 5 latin fellows to hand wash the car for me (it was waaayyy too cold to do it myself) then I polished and waxed it myself.

Well here are the "Best Of" pictures from my trip.

January 7th, 2010: Rear brake pads were changed out. I managed to break a brake caliper retractor tool while doing this and had to order a new one. This was the first time I'd done the rear pads and was more involved than the front pads with stoptechs. Those little springs make it interesting.

I will definitely need to throw in new rotors after these pads as the they have started developing a nice lip. I'm thinking cross drilled rotors next time around since I'm a sucker for the looks.

    Re: KNaudiA4 **> S4

A thread in the A6 forum got me thinking about people's screen names here on the 'zine, where they come from and what they mean. I promise that pretty much no one here knows what mine means and what better place to explain it than my own bio page.

So my screen name has two parts: KN and audi. The KN comes from my last name (Knecht, go ahead, facebook stalk me, that's fine) and, when coupled with Audi, its KNAUDI. The idea was originally my father's when he had an Audi back when I was born and he had a vanity plate made to that effect (see below). The plate has been with our family ever since, it was on my A4 and, when I sold that, it went to my dad's S6 where it is currently. So those who don't understand the story behind the name, they often think it means "naughty", which isn't the intended meaning but totally fine by me.

The original plate from the Audi 200 (I still have this plate hanging on my wall):

The updated plate on my old A4:

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

January 10th: Got around to installing my Pro Clip iPod cradle I got for Christmas. This is a very well thought out solution for the goals I aimed for. I wanted my iPod touch in my line of sight so I could control from the iPod if I wanted and I also wanted the mount to twist and swivel so my *uhm* passenger could watch movies in the car (I do plenty of 5+ hour drives). And I did NOT want to drill into any interior bits (the Pro Clip cradle wedges between the head unit and the actual dash and you drill into itself).

For anyone thinking about getting something from Pro Clip (which I highly suggest), you have to order the actual mount for where you want to mount the iPod (A/C vent or right next to the head unit) and then order the cradle specific to your iPod. Its not a cheap solution but it is worth it.

I snapped some pictures of the set up (forgive the dirty interior):

Went on a spending spree this week.

Things to do in the near future:
    -Euro plate "SLEEPER"
    -Piano black interior trim
-OEM shift knob (from Mark P, theschoolbus), you can see in above pictures that mine's toast
    -Slightly used rear OEM rotors
-Thinking about doing the home depot splitter DIY (here)

New knob and plate in already.

As you can see, my old knob was treated pretty terribly by a previous owner (how they messed up the actual face of the knob up is beyond me):

the new knob was courtesy of Mark P (theschoolbus) who recently sold his IMMACULATE Imola wagon...... errr..... I mean Avant, sorry.

    old knob:

    new knob:

and now for the new Euro plate. I took off my filler plate and used 6 pieces of velcro to attache the Euro plate in its spot. This way I can take it off whenever:

    Re: KNaudiA4 ****> S4

Update: I bought a suede covered trim set in addition to the piano set. After seeing both in the car, I chose the suede.

I started the actual install last night and its more involved than the write up would have you think. I got the 2 front doors, the hazard surround, and the long dash piece done before calling it quits for the night.

I plan on doing a write up myself but before I do that, let me point out a few things:
-Once you do one door, the rest are SUPER easy
-For the front doors, there are 5 clips that hold the trim in. The middle most clip is hard to see because of the foam lining. Once you remove it, don't bother replacing it for the new trim.
-The long dash piece is a pain in the f*cking ass. Why did Audi use a different style clip for that piece that requires you to hack away at it while not being able to see it? I ended up getting pissed off enough to rip my wood long dash piece out, yea its bent now.
-When you put the new long dash piece in, DO NOT USE ALL THE CLIPS if you ever want to get it out again without breaking/bending it. I only used the 3 on the far right and used 2x sided tape on the left side.
-Leave the hazard surround off while you deal with the long trim piece.

So tonight I have the 2 rear doors to do and the small dash piece on the L side of the steering column. The shift surround and the ash tray cover are still out getting wrapped in alcantara (thanks Aaron).

I will post pictures (it already looks 10x better than the wood trim and my dash still isn't back together) and do a thorough write up because the one that people use isn't nearly detailed enough.

I was lucky to get the car out at all. Had to rock climb around ice chunks to make it out of the garage.

trim removal and install DIY and guide

Alright. Trim install. As I said before, I went with silver alcantara over the piano trim. I used this write up (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...hortcut-Method) for my inspiration and will be adding my own commentary here (thanks S4Tranquility).

    Tools I used:
    - small phillips head screwdriver
    - socket wrench with 10 and 8mm sockets with extension
    - Long, thin flathead screwdriver
    - Butter knife to be used as a pry tool

    1. Start with the doors. They are the easier bits.
    -Put all your windows down
    - Remove three screws, two on either side by the window molding and one under the handle in the middle of the door, see pic below

-Now pull down the plastic door handle molding that was held on by that last screw to reveal 2 more brass screws (only 1 in rear doors) that hold the door card in place. Be gentle with this piece, start with the side closest to the front of the car. Don't pull it out completely, just enough to access the 2 screws. see another picture below.

-Put your hands on the bottom part of the door card and push up. You may have to wiggle it back and forth to get it to move.
-Make sure the locking indicator is not stuck in its slot, you can bend this too far. Make sure you take it out.
-Lean the door card up against your body. There are wires still attached so don't let it lean more than the pic below

-There is a black foam coating over where the clips holding the trim in are. Be gentle pulling this back, start from the top.
-Here is what you are looking to remove to get the trim out. There are 5 of these on the front doors and 4 on the rears. Yes, this is accurate. It is easy to miss the middle most clips as they are hard to see without really sticking your head down there, but, trust me, they are there.

-The best way to remove these suckers is to push down with your finger on the 2 pronged section while you push it out from over the metal stud. Make sure you save these, you will need them for the re-installation of your new trim. If you lose one or even two per door, you still should be alright.

-With ALL clips removed, push outward on the far left and right metal studs to loosen the trim up, it won't come out with you just yanking on it. Be patient and keep pressing on the metal studs, it'll come out eventually.
-Now you are going to do exactly the reverse of what you just did with your new trim. If you only use 3 or 4 of the clips to put the trim back in, that's no big deal, just leave the center most clips off. On the front doors, I only used 4 because the center most metal stud was a PITA to get to.
-Make sure to put the foam lining back in place!!!!
-The only trick to getting the door card seated property is to be gentle and patient. Wiggle, wiggle, and wiggle some more. It will go on eventually. But seriously, be patient with it. And make sure the door lock indicator thingy goes back in properly.

Take a break after 4 doors. Provided you have never done this before, it probably took you over an hour.

Follow my order here, trust me

    Step 2. Hazard surround
-Remove hazard surround, do NOT put in the new piece, its easier to get the long dash piece out without the hazard surround in place. To do this, use your butter knife and insert it in top of the piece and pry it forward slowly, the top should pop right out. Do the same for the bottom. There are 6 clips that you need to pop the piece out of. See below for examples of the clips

pry from the top like this first, then go from the bottom:

Step 3 Removing the dash under the steering column
-Take off the fuse panel cover. Be careful but use your butter knife. There are 2 clips that will pop out.
-There are 2 very obvious bolts inside the fuse panel area that you have to remove with your socket wrench. see this pic:

-There are 2 more bolts holding up the dash and the are under lil soft plastic pieces around the knee bolster. Get on the floor of the driver's area and look for these plastic panels. There should be obvious. You can remove them with your butter knife where the arrows point and each should reveal deep holes with bolts in them (red dots), this is where you use your socket extension. Pics below

Step 4: The small dash piece to the left of the steering column

-This will be your warm up for the long dash piece so be ready to learn. There are different clips for these pieces than the doors had (why? I have no idea but I do know these clips SUCK)
-Here is what you are looking for as you look through the fuse panel area:

-You need to take your flat head and jam in under these clips and then twist hard to get these lil bastards off. These are extremely frustrating and you will have to take your time here. Don't worry about breaking these clips, they are damn near indestructible. Try not to lose them to the abyss behind the dash, you will need them again. See pic below:

-Once you have the clips off, push on the metal studs to be the trim out.
-Reverse the process to put the new trim back in BUT DO NOT BUTTON THE DASH BACK UP!!!
-You have to push on both sides of those clips to get them back on.

Step 4: The long dash piece. Seriously, have your patience ready for this one.
-You didn't put the dash back together did you? No? Good.
-See the picture below of where all the clips holding this bad boy in are:

-The left most clip can only accessed by not putting the left side dash back together. Find that left most clip and get the bastard off with the ole insert screw driver and twist method. Try to recover that clip.
-Now you have to take the passenger side dash apart too.
-There is a similar cap to the fuse box cap on the passenger side. Open the passenger door and be careful taking this off
-There are 2 bolts (just like the fuse panel box) that need to be removed
-Open your glove box and take everything out.
-You are going to need to get the glove box to sort of fall down off its perch. To do this you have to pull both sidewalls in at the same time. Pinch where marked in the picture below:

-Alright, one more step before clip removal, there are 2 bolts that have to be removed. One is very obvious with the glove box gone. The other you'll need your extension for. See picture below, the picture is taken sideways:

-With those bolts out, the dash should drop down just enough to give your hand access to the clips for the trim. Take the same approach getting these out as you did before. Try hard to not lose the clips to the dash board monster.
-There are 4 clips you can get at right there, remember this picture? You are going for the 4 right most points.

Stop, get a drink or something, here comes the hardest part of the job.......The center most clip for the long dash piece.

-You are going to use your butter knife or flat head here, insert under between the trim piece and the actual dash and pry gently. Try all angles. The clip will eventually give. Either that or you will break the long trim piece. (I hope you haven't put the hazard surround back in yet)
-See this picture below. The arrows show where you will insert the butter knife and the red dot is where the actual stud is:

-If you are too rough, you'll end up with this:

-Get it out? Great! Break it? Damn.

-Now put the new piece in and put the clips back on. All but the one above the hazard/radio area. If you ever take the trim out again, you don't want to have to deal with that again.

-Alright, time to reverse the whole shabang. Put the passenger side dash back together. Be careful with that one bolt that needs the extension, but a piece of paper towel in between the bolt and the socket head to hold it in place. Put the glove box back up in there, put the 2 bolts back in the side, put the cover back on. Go back over to the driver side, put the lower dash back together, put the knee bolster soft plastic covers back on, 2 more bolts back in the fuse box area, put the cover back on.

Last step: Hazard surround, ash tray cover and shift surround
-Just snap the new hazard surround in, done
-For a 6MT, take off the shift knob and pull the shift surround up as so:

-There are 4 clips underneath that you need to press in to get the leather shift boot out, there are 2 on each side. 2 are shown below:

-Clip the boot into the new surround and install and put the knob back on, done.
-Open the ash tray. There is a black switch that removes the silver metal ash tray, move the switch right and remove the actual ash tray.

-Look at where the ash tray used to be, there are 2 metal black clips that you push to remove the cover, push em down and remove the cover. See the picture below. One clip is broken in my picture:

Install the old one in reverse.

    Admire your new interior!

I would like to thank S4tranquility for the write up. I am in no way saying his write up wasn't great, I just think for us less gifted folk, there needed to be some more explanation so I added it. Thanks again and good luck to those who attempt this undertaking. PM me with questions if you like.

I will be adding my own pictures below shortly, so keep reading.

loving the texture. you can't really get an impression from pictures of the warmth it adds to the interior but this shot helps:

Front seat, trim, and carpet removal DIY, Write Up. How to dry your carpet.

Alright, confession time. I accidentally spilled 1/2 gallon of water in the car (I carry gallon jugs of warm water with me to wash my car with, one opened and I didn't notice). I managed to catch 90% of the water in the insert floor mat so I took that out to dry it. Some of the water did make it into the actual carpet. I was paranoid about mold growth even though I dried out the carpet with vacuuming and hair dryers. So I decided to take up the carpet (and take out the front seat) to make sure the foam underneath was dry. It was mostly dry but a few spots of dampness to dry out.

I couldn't really find a write up for anything like this so I thought I'd throw one together.

    Things you need:
    -6mm hex wrench
    -Phillips head screw driver
    -Tupperware containers
    -Fan and/or hairdryer
    -VAG-COM (optional)
-DampRid (can be found at Home Depot)
-Antimicrobial sprays (Lysol, Febreeze, rubbing alcohol, etc, not blue moon obviously)

    Step 1: Back Bench Seat
-Stick you hands under the front of the seat. Pull up on the passenger side, the center, and the driver side.
    -Pull forward
    -That's it

    Step 2: Front Seat Removal
    -Make sure ignition is off
    -Take off headrest
-Move seat all the way up and back
-Remove the covers at the front of the rails. You push down on these HARD as you pull them off the front of the rails
-There should be a single 6mm headed bolt on each rail looking like this:

-Take your 6mm hex and get these suckers out. They are probably in there real tight. Use some strength to break 'em loose.
-This is what they look like when out, what the nicks in the bolts are, I have no idea:

-Move the seat all the way up
-There are plastic caps on the rear rails too. Each one is held in by a single phillips head screw, remove the screws and pull the caps towards the rear of the car:

-Okay, big step here. DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY! you are about to mess with the airbags, just to be safe take the power away. NOTE: if you turn the ignition on while the front seat is out, you will get an airbag light that can only be cleared with a VAG-COM.
-Lean the seat back and stick your head under the front of the seat. You should see 3 hookups for the airbag. One yellow, one green, one red.
-The yellow one is ultra easy to disconnect
-The other two require some finagling. There are black clips on the back that you need to squeeze HARD to get these harnesses off. Squeeze and pull. DO NOT PULL ON THE WIRES! Have patience, these are in there good.
-Once the harnesses are disconnected, the front of the seat should already be out the rails. Time to get the rear out of the rails too.
-Push the seat back towards the rear of the car HARD. This may have the rear pop up and out of the rails. If not, you will have to play around to get the rears out. Be patient
-The seat should be free. Lean it forward to take it out the front door. Be careful, its not light.
-Your car should now look like this:

-You will probably find all sorts of change and crap. Apparently a previous owner liked to ball up gum wrappers and throw them down there. Vacuum the hell out the spot under the seat

    Step 3: Floor trim removal
-Go up into the passenger side front footwell. There are 2 screws holding a plastic cover in place there. One is obvious and is at the bottom of the glove box. The other is covered by a little square plastic piece. This should be fairly obvious and can be taken off with a key or flat head screw driver. There's another phillips screw under there, get rid of it. The plastic cover should come away now:

-There is one screw holding the rear of long trim piece in. Its under where the rear bench seat was. I don't have a picture of this but its by where the door and rear bench seat come together. Here's the general area:

-Now you can just pull the trim straight up. The clips should pop right out. The only trick is the bit around the seat belt area. You need to pull this area towards the inside of the car, not straight up.

    -The clips look like this:

    Step 4: The carpet
-This is where your tupperware comes in. Stick your hands under the carpet from where the trim was holding it down and lift it up. You stick your tupperware under there to hold the heavy carpet up off the floor:

-Spray your anti fungal/bacterial/microbial stuff in there. Be liberal.
-Jam a fan and/or hairdryer under there and run them:

-Put the damp rid around the car in strategic places where they won't fall over and spill. I used 2 containers:

-Leave the windows open and leave the fan on

-I left the fan for 2 days to make sure everything was dry. Car looked like this for a few days:

Enjoy your new furniture for a few days:

March 10th: 60+ degrees in DC means time for the summer wheels (Enkei RPM2s) to go on.

also got my hands on a wrecked Nogaro sedan so I shopped around a bit. Got a new hood latch as the little rubber grabber on mine had broken:

    new rubber grabber

also got a new hazard surround b/c the clips on my old one had all broken:

    April 11th, 2010

I got a set of slightly used rear 02 sensors from ebay for the "CEL Delete" (aka I replaced the BS generic 02 sensors from the previous owner with working OEM 02s). The codes I was getting was for failed heating circuits for both rear 02s so I wanted to replace both units entirely, from engine bay back to the exhaust sensor itself. The way to do this, I found, was to get an old clothes hanger and straighten it out and then have a buddy thread it down thru the engine bay to you while you are under the car. You grab it and direct it to the bungs. After that, attach the sensor unit to the hanger with a liberal amount of electrical tape and gently pull it through the engine bay.

The only issue I ran into is that I have the APR SRT exhaust which has the 02 bungs considerably further back than the stock exhaust does. So, guess what? The Audi sensors aren't long enough. I don't particularly need the sensors in the exhaust stream as I have the rears soft coded out (just means that there need to be working sensors hooked up somewhere). So wtf could I do? I couldn't just let them dangle there so I had to zip tie them up out of the way (you can't zip tie the actual metal sensor b/c of the heater unit in the sensors, they would melt the plastic). Anyway, I zip tied the wires to the heat shielding around the exhaust for now. I don't know how I'm going to handle this. I may get another set of sensor and wire them in there to extend them. Or I may just find a better place to tie these ones out of the way. I don't really care as long as I don't have a CEL and its safe.

I also flushed out the power steering fluid with my newest tool, a turkey baster I bought at the local grocery store. The PS fluid that was in there currently was a nasty brown color. I refilled the reservoir with the OEM Pentosin fluid. Hopefully this will make my steering pump a little quieter.

April 13th, 2010: A set of gunmetal VMR v710s came up in the classifieds and were very local so I jumped on them! They are dead sexy, especially in the gunmetal color (fitting as I didn't really want black wheels but was getting really tired of 2 sets of silver wheels). The concavity makes them just THAT much better. I was kind of worried about them not fitting over my StopTechs but there is tons of clearance, which I assume VMR designed for. I was also worried about rubbing with 8.5 width wheels on 235 width tire but after driving for an hour, there hasn't been an issue even with 5 wheels in the back.

    Details:
    VMR v710s
    Gunmetal finish
    18x8.5 et 35
    P Zero Nero M&S tires
    235/40R18 (z rated)

and I, of course, had some fun with the pics:

A small mod here but I love the smallest mods the most sometimes. Got an allroad engine cover for $15. They have silver lettering that is raised quite a bit more than the S4 cover.
