Alright, here is my official build thread. I'm hoping to have the motor built and in the car by spring 2010. I'll be documenting the whole thing here for you guys to follow. Wish me luck Big thanks to DCdubs, Ryan @Cutrubus Audi, Integrated Engineering, Dthaus, and anyone/everyone else who is going to/has help with this.
If it weren't for all the issues with ECU, wiring, and other PITA swap stuff, I would consider this swap too. Instead, I think I'll pick up your 3.0, build it, and see how much whp we can make on moderate boost. Please take lots of pics and do a good writeup Tyler. This should be an awesome thread, and motor swaps are always entertaining. Good luck!

cool project. I would have gotten Doug's motor to save a bunch of headaches but learning by doing it is always cool
I provided the OP with a very generous offer that would have covered the motor and all the electronics (wiring/ecu, etc.) but he decided to go down a different path. I respect his decision and can only say "Enjoy. I wish you the best in your endeavors and hope this project comes out successful."
Doug made me an awesome deal, and I would be lucky to have his motor. If I was still going the GT3071R route I would pick it up in a heartbeat. His motor belongs in a car that will push big power and I would not use it's potential. Doug has really gone out of his way to put together a great deal for me, and I'm sure he will have no problems selling it.
Motor build plans are still in the air but the tear down has begun. Thanks to Nico (Styleprojekt) I have the motor.
Pulled the head, TB, cams, AC, oil pan, clutch/flywheel, etc... mostly tonight.... oh and 1 piston/rod for a paper weight.
My new paper weight
NO WAY! i was there the day you pulled that motor. I was pulling up in Nico's driveway as you drove away in your truck. small world man... Good Luck. I now understand why you dont ever go to the audi meets.

I know you were... I recognize your car, I've seen it around a few times. What do you mean by you understand why I don't ever go to any of the Audi meets?

No... you're the man! You should bring your car out to Dubs and Coffee again, I can't make Dubs and sugar, I work late Thursdays.

i am guess i am just assuming, but i would figure you car is on stands or without a motor at this point. just assumed no car to drive.
Alright block is completely torn down. Its ready to get cleaned and honed then I can start the rebuild of the crank, rods, and cylinders. Should I do the calico coating on the bearings?
VW/Audi does not use any of that shit and their motors last well over 100K miles. Not to put anybody down, but most of the builds that use all of these "snake oil" treatments barely last 15K miles.
Thanks Greg. Sounds good, I want a super strong reliable motor... thats the point of a complete build I guess. Anyone have any tricks on cleaning the block all shiny?
Well, you do not really need to do it yourself. Take everything to the machine shop that is going to hone the cylinders for you and have them hot tank it.
I really would not try to go overboard with the build.
Stick with the basics. Drop in rods, new OEM bearings, Ferrea exhaust valves and Ferrea springs.
I'm 100% the DIY type, and completely an overdoer lol. I degreased and power washed the crap out of the block today, it is super clean. Its going in to get honed tomorrow then I'm going to paint it and reinstall the crankshaft. Then its up to SLC to pick up my pistons/rods/bearings and I can reassemble the shortblock. After that I can start the headwork.

Make sure you have the entire rotating assembly at the machine shop when the block gets machined. You want everything done in one location so all the measurements can be done and things machined accordingly. If that is not done, do not expect longevity out of your motor.
Alright... good day today, some parts came in. JE pistons, Integrated Engineering rods, ARP bolts, bearings, and the block is honed. I have to say the rods from Integrated Engineering are just beautiful, these guys are really dedicated to their product and it really shows. The finish and quality is so impressive it almost feels wrong to seal them up in a block. Pete and Dave are great guys, they showed me around the shop and answered a lot of questions... major thumbs up!

Stay away from anything Supertech.
why stay away from supertech???
ferrea valves are heavier than the supertechs??
I also had a bad experience with the ferrea springs
I know a couple of vw using complete supertech valvetrains making tons of power
what's bad about the supertechs??
