If you have a V1, it will alert to this every time (really annoying and de-sensitises you to a real alert). On the Bel/Escorts they always do not alert to this system - its hit or miss due to the technology and filtering in the detector. I had this happen the other day with a new Audi next to me - Sti would alert for 5 secs then go silent - another minute it would do it again, and again.
As for other detectors - well, most are not worth discussing especially the items most of the audi dealers sell as an add-on.
V1's philosophy has always been alert to radar and let the user decide if it is a threat and they do it very well.
Bel/Escorts model is different. They know the number one reason people return detectors is due to the falses from door openers and they filter K band quite extensively. As a result the tolerances for the Bel/Escorts to alert - Signal Strength and duration is more than the V1 needs to alert.
Escort is working on the problem and they might have a solution, but this would hurt detection ability for real radar threats.
For those of you who drive in Cali on the thruway and have a detector you must be familiar with the K band traffic monitoring. The signal is brief but annoying. Escort has a software update that fixes this for a few detectors (including the Bel Rx-65). Those with a V1 will have to put up with this issue (or increase their K band mute time). It is called a TSR update. All it generally does is raise the floor for the duration of the alert so that the detector will not alert to this brief K band, which of course could hurt an I/O K band encounter on the same frequency (it may not alet to a signal that is less than a few secs).
If their fix is something along those lines than I would rather get the Kband alert from the new Audis.
Audi has been taking a lot of heat on this and hopefully will do something, but several have already been sold. I do not believe K band is used in Germany (and detectors might be illegal there anyhow)
With that said the radar detector makers have sent a letter to AOA and had a meeting with them to explain the problem. So far AOA has ignored the issue and several people with Detectors have disabled the radar system on their audis. AOA can put it on a frequency that the detectors will not sweep (above 24.200 and less than Ka band) and keep everyone happy but then the cost would be more as those transmitters are more expense, as less of them are made.
Saki - Why do you ask? The OPP will take any non-stealth detector very quickly with their Spectre VI - Which includes the V1 - Mine got taken on the 401 on the way to Toronto and another by the QPP near Montreal. Unless you have an Sti, Sti-R, 9500ci or Redline (all made by Bel/Escort) they can find them quite easily in the banned provinces and my fines were about $500 each - and that was many moons ago.
