Change out the Cabin Air Filter. Its under the hood next to the battery and its very easy to change.
If its not that, it could be excess moisture in the system..Not sure the best way to tackle that but someone could chime in..

Re: A/C smells like vinegar (occasionally)...

Yes, caused by fungus in the A/C evaporator housing due to the moisture that accumulates there. To kill the fungus, remove the intake air filter, and loosly cover the dash vents with paper towels taped to the dash. With the A/C fan running in manual mode cold/fast, spray Lysol into the fan intake, use the entire can, then shut off the fan and allow the Lysol to soak in the A/C evaporator core for awhile. Finally, remove the paper towels from the dash and replace the intake air filter. This procedure may need to be repeated several times during the summer months as needed.

Hmm...just changed the air filter 1 or 2 weeks ago. Could it be since it's new it's giving off some weird smell?

That product requires a similar if not identical application process to the procedure I described for the Lysol application, and Lysol is cheaper. Please follow up with your results whatever you decide to try.

I did the Lysol once and it helped, but did not go away permanently. The only difference was that I turned the heater on.

Had this problem before. I was told by the Audi tech that it is due to the way the A/C system works. He flushed the system clean at no cost for this one time, and told me to turn off the A/C a block or 2 before arriving at your destination. It has been working for me... I turn it off a few seconds before I arrive at my destination...
My wife does not care, so after she uses my car, the smell comes back... then I have to do the process for a few times and it goes away....

Yeah, putting the system in "ECON" mode for awhile before reaching your destination, helps dry out the evaporator core and inhibits mold growth in the evaporator housing.

I used this product about 2 weeks ago. It didn't work. I followed the instructions on the label perfectly. Also, I've learned that to keep condensation from staying in the system, I have been turning off the AC and blasting the defrosters at 72* for the last few miles of driving. Nothing has helped. Every time I start the car I get punched in the face with this smell. It only lasts until I either get the windows down or turn the AC back on for a few minutes and get the air circulating, but it's still very annoying....

    ...good thing I'm single.

Several applications may be needed initially, and repeat applications during the cooling season too.

very interesting. i used it on my dads envoy and it worked perfectly. i guess its just the way our systems work that it doesn't allow this stuff to do its job

The smell varies regionally, along with the different fungus types in different regions.

That is funny but true. In undergrad, one of my micro-bio professors claimed that she could identify what spore family she was looking at just by smelling it.

so if no method works, the only way to get this clean is to disassemble your evap and clean it out?

i'm going to try the lysol technique. my vents some times smell like i just wore my shoes all day and took my shoes off, not smelly, but of worn socks. was like this from the previous owner.
