Im looking for a new career and have no Idea what I want to do so I thought maybe I may get some ideas here. I have sold real estate for the past 8yrs but have been gradualing loosing interest/passion.
Im also looking to move to San Diego so if any of you have any leads they would be much appreciated.
p.s. Yes, I had the military thread and still considering.
I work in San diego as a power lineman, for sdg&e utility. Makes $120,000 to $200,000 depending on how much overtime you put in. It's a great job and i never get tired of it, but not exactly the safest or easiest, also you have to go through an apprenticeship before becoming a lineman. Look up power lines on you tube and you can see what I have to do on a day today. Good luck
you can visit http://www.sdge.com/careers/ to apply but there site seems to be down or something. they have a ton of other positions also that you can browse.
Graphic designer and web developer. I freelanced while I was in school and did it for a few years once I graduated (with Honors ).
Started my own multimedia firm last year with my partner. So far it's not bad. I'm trying to slowly get some american clients but with the canadian dollar being almost par to american it's hard to entice them since i'm offsite. Otherwise all is not bad.
Well I still kinda do my old job....But now I am a full time private investigator. An International company came to me with an offer I couldn't believe in this economy. So now, I travel all over, make great money, and get to do whatever I want. I was in Athens/Milan last week following some dude cheating on his wife...So I guess it does have its perks. I don't know how long I'll stick with this though. I'm getting kinda bored of ruining peoples lives all the time.
I'm an antique dealer, doing it for the last 20 odd yrs. It's a losing business because we need collectors to perpetuate the hobby and there less and less of them out there. Most are people (over 50) and the younger ones have no interest at all, so we need more collectors. The best part of my job is the hunt and finding the diamond in the ruff. It's challenging and can be quite profitable. Sure I'd like something different.

I've actually thought about that. I know national grid is hiring alot here in New England, and they also have their own training/educational program for people to attend. What's the deal with apprenticeship? How long do you do that for and is it paid or unpaid?

Architect. I would advise against it, as you'd need a degree in Architecture, and the pay isn't all that great. And long hours.
Thats the case with everything it seams. Need experiance/education = overworked/underpaid, and EVERY field seems saturated. Im not just talking bad economy Im talking pure US greed/consumerism saturation.
Oh and only the top 10% in anything make money. Like your chosen career. It used to be if you were an Architect or Lawyer then you would be alright. Not the case.
My girl is a project manager for an architecht firm, and it's been hit and miss. The building in Vegas has almost come to a stop. Even a couple of multi-million dollar resorts, and one $4 billion project were put on hold when their funding got pulled. I on the other hand drive taxis and even our ride volume has dropped a good 45% and since I work off comission my income has taken a hit as well.
So good luck my friend. It's kinda tough everywhere right now.

Since I chimed in twice without answering the original question, I'm a Personal and Athletic Trainer. It's a very unpredictable industry in general, and very much a revolving door industry in terms of here-today, gone-tomorrow trainers, but I've been doing it now for 7 years and have increased my income each and every year, including this year in the recession! So, I consider myself very lucky, but also very good at what I do...

My first job is working at my mom's office. I design the newsletter that they send out and I also do whatever grunt work needs to be done.
My second job (no-pay) is that I'm a writer for loot-ninja (www.loot-ninja.com). Since I'm still in school I figured it would be a good idea to keep writing over the summer.

Before that I owned a pet care business (dog walking, cat sitting, house sitting, etc..) 100k to 150k yearly depending on how much I wanted to work.
Before that I was a brewer. I worked for Pyramid Brewery, Lost Coast Brewery, and a few brew pubs. I also was the production manager for a lab where we grew up brewers yeast for wineries, breweries and distilleries and shipped it world wide.
Before that I was a wine steward.
Before that, a multitude of restaurant jobs including waiter, bus boy, dishwasher, prep cook, cook, etc....

Dave - Moderator Issue? send me an email One of my favorite philosophical tenets is that people will agree with you only if they already agree with you. You do not change people's minds.

Illegal? (or did whatever state your from pass the medical bill / growing bill)
I live in San Francisco. Totally legal from a prop. 215 view. Also totally overlooked by all here (neighbors, cops, etc.). There is at least 3-4 grow houses on every block in SF. The city/county actually grows weed for people here at the city/ county hospital.

I work for a large bank/Broker Dealer, in the Investment banking division, manage Ops teams and work on various projects. Extremely stressful, fast paced, long hours, lots of responsibilites... pays ok.
Wow, I bet you see some crazy stuff driving taxi's in Vegas!!!
You have no idea...I deal with everything from CEOs of major corporations (J. Mays of Ford Motor Co.), to celebrities (Woody from the Rolling Stones, Green Day Drummer, UFC's Tim Silvia and Sawn Tompkins), all the way down to the strippers and hookers. The drunk Collage girls are especially fun on the weekends.. LOL

I just finished a summer internship at an investment bank. Like Gigi said, this industry is fast-paced and stressful. My hours were typically 9am-10pm and I worked every Sunday (in a slow economy). It's not fun, it's not glamorous, and you don't get paid that much for how much you work, but it's how you get a lot of exit opportunities after two years of being a little slave.
I worked at Circuit City for the past 5 years. Went from Customer Service lead to Operations Manager, and have done that for about 3 years, pay was anywhere from 45-65k a year. But as I'm sure everyone has heard Circuit City went out of business and now I've been unemployed for almost 5 months collecting unemployment. It was great, except during the holiday season.
i was taking summer classes and just finished, Got a call for a really Nice internship (PAID :D) the interview is next week, So i m hoping I score. need to get some projects started for my baby :-) oh btw, I am Doing electrical & computer engineering, and the internship is hopefully get some money into the pocket.
I have lived in Vegas for 2 years and I am a host at Tryst and Xs Nightclubs at the Wynn, as well as Drais Afterhours. I do sales (bottle service and promotions) as well as marketing and advertising. Let me know when anyone comes out for a visit.
I work in the film industry. Specifically visual effects, more specifically 3d visual effects. Needs training, but the film industry in general can be rewarding if you don't want a family, enjoy insanely long hours, and love having everything you do critiqued and revised.
:D
And then when it airs people go "Wow, you did that?"

For a real cool guy.
Dave's once of the nicest guys alive. He gave me a full guided tour of SF in the allroad back in Feb.
Thanks again Dave. Hopefully I'll get another chance to head out that way soon.
