Yes, HTA wheel in a 28rs frame. Stock garrett compressor housing, very slightly machined.

I was running a plain-jane 28rs before but it dun blow'd up (see the compressor wheel pic above).

I think its a 30 wheel. Look at the difference in the plate under the wheel in the first pic and in the 28 wheel pic. The plate is about 1/2" narrower in the 1st pic.

Good call Chris. Also look how much taller it is. Look at all the threads sticking out of the nut from the stock wheel and there are none even sticking out of the nut with the HTA wheel.

I honestly don't know. I was told that this was the first 28 series done "for a 1.8t" but that this wheel has been used in porsche applications previously.

Here are some more pics for you to peruse:

    old

    new

    old

    new

top down (note the angle of the shot makes judging size deceiving. The compressor housing cover sizes are identical)

    edit:
I measured the pixels each impeller takes up, compared to the pixels taken up by the whole plate.
    28rs: 119/260 = 0.45
    HTA: 153/299 = 0.51

This is visually obvious as well... the hta wheel is definitely wider at the base.

    You're right. I'm being cruel.

You know, You can put the thin strainer mesh filter right on the compressor housing so even if foreign objects do get through, it will be stopped right before it enters. YOu'll hear rattling if you got a rock or something, then you'll know to pull the TIP and remove the FOD.

Also, people have used Nylon stockings over their maf housing outlet, or on the snorkel before it enters the airbox with a lot of success. If you have a open air cone filter, even better. Nylon fits over that. You don't even have to wash that baby. Just remove the sock, and put another brand new one on there.

^just a thought, if you have nightmares about this kind of thing. It is preventable.

Those pictures are really getting my heart rate going though.

    Nice job

This looks very interesting :) Did they say anything about power limits for this compressor wheel? How much did it cost you? Do you have a before dyno and will you do an after dyno? Sorry, bunch of questions there, hehe..

All the information I post regarding this wheel is basically hearsay. Have some salt.

The standard 28rs flows 35lb/min. This wheel can flow 42? 45? I can't remember exactly what I was told, but it was about 25% more edit: 48lb/min; 37% more flow potential. I was also told that this wheel will retain typical 28rs spool time (which I have confirmed empirically).

It will supposedly retail around $1500.

I have a few dynos to compare to but there are other changes to my car, including Test Pipe and Tuning that will affect my numbers. I am (like everyone else) currently waiting on tuning.

I bought this turbo from Johnny Bravo, who works with TiAL. Just spoke with him a few seconds ago, he said the wheel is capable of 48lb/min and he's calling the turbo a 2868. johnnycorp@gmail.com

This is sweet. I wonder if I can get mine rebuilt to these specs. Would be so much better for the psi I'm running. Keep us updated on how this runs compared to your old standard 28rs.

Will do. I'm going "another direction" in regards to my tune, so I'm starting from scratch again in that regard . As soon as I have something resembling a tune I'll be sure to post my results.

As far as rebuilding with the machined wheel, I am not sure. Shoot Jonathan an email... he's been good to work with so far!

But the thing you have to figure out is at what boost level and pressure ratio is needed to get it to produce 48 lb/min. This is when the compressor map comes in handy.

I don't intend to max this thing out for daily driving, but it's nice to know that I can push nearly 35% more air than my old turbo without falling completely outside the map! I doubt they have even have a map, so we'll have to search for the sweet spots empirically during the tuning process. ... if that ever happens

So the compressor housing has a 3 inch inlet and a 2 inch outlet? Do you happen to know the compressor wheel inducer diameter? Is the turbine a standard gt2860rs with a 53.8mm 76 trim, and what is the turbine a/r? Very interested.

Forced Performance does not do anything with a 28 series GT turbo.

TiAL did this for Chris. TiAL's website has info. Well, just a picture and a placeholder. Looks like they are currently getting things together.

For the cost, not sure if I would go this route (modified 28 series) if I were anywhere but in altitude. Air is dense at sea level and a 3071 will more than make up for the shortcomings of a 28 series GT turbo. However, that is only my opinion yet I've done some crazy stuff (you should see the 30 series that is on my car) like this so I'm actually curious to see Chris' results.

Jonathan machined my compressor cover to fit the ASP inlet hose. It's slightly smaller than 3" inlet. Different compressor covers options are available. The hot side is a standard 28rs, I believe .64.

Jonathan can answer your questions with certainty, see above for his email address.

When my turbo died, I was looking for a bolt-on replacement. I first-and-foremost wanted something that spooled quickly, for good daily driving response. The opportunity to try this turbo came up, and I believe it will retain the quick-ish spool of the 28rs, yet allow for significantly higher power levels. I'll post up some 3rd gear boost logs later.

I would say that is over spinning caused by over boost, not FOD

    Nice job
    That's not FOD

Well I got some more info on this. I contacted Jake at Tial and he told me that they machine the compressor housing for Forced Performance. They can provide these FP turbos, but they are by no means TiAL turbos.

Did you speak with Aniel at FP? If so that is why they do not know anything about them. He has not been informed of that particular turbo.

Jake @ Tial has been told by Forced Performance that they will have a 71mm version out in a few weeks that will fit on my hub (will flow more than the 68).

Check their website often because that upgrade should be on there soon...
