Are you throwing a CEL P0441? I have the fix!!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So here is the story. A year ago I did the vacuum hose/check valve removal as per the DIY. As soon as I did it I my check engine light came on. I scanned it with Vagcom but since it was a evap code I really didn't care. My gas mileage was fine and the car performed flawlessly. Well after a year of staring at a check engine light I decided to fix it. I know in the DIY it says to vent the N80 valve directly into the engine bay and you won't throw a code but on my car that was false. I went to NAPA today and bought a check valve (part # 2-939 distributor check valve) and installed it . I ran a vacuum hose from the N80 valve to the back of the intake manifold port. It wasn't being used any more since the vacuum delete. I put the check valve inline on the hose, started up my car and no more CEL. I can't believe I waited a year to do this.

Just for the record, driving with a CEL on makes the ECU stay in open loop therefore your gas mileage will be affected as the ECU isn't utilizing feedback from sensors.

This is true for most vehicle ECUs so it is most likely true for ours.

To clarify, the N80 is the purge valve for the gas tank. I will try to get a picture up later.

I am already getting 380-400 miles to the tank. If what you say is true, I'll get even better than that. Sounds like a win for me!

update. It didn't work. The next day I threw the code again. Only this time it said it detected reverse flow. So I moved the hose to the TIP just like BOPAH did. I figured that would always provide the suction the valve needs to see. Lo and behold I threw another check engine light. Haven't hade a chance to see what code but 100% it id P0441. will solve this but I can only work on this on the weekends

i dont know what exactly is going on, but i erased that code last night and still haven't got it back. I think it depends on how you driving, i remember it came up when i was on WOT, but during regular driving its not coming on, so im keeping that set up for now.

Re: Are you throwing a CEL P0441? I have the fix!!!

I am getting this CEL code on my 3.0 too. It started because I decided to fill up the gas tank with the engine on.

I have reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for about 20 minutes, and the CEL will go off for about 3 days, and then it is back on again. I am tired of looking at it, so this thread was a huge tease!

Any Audi techs out there willing to let us know how to cure this code?

wait, so that's the code that ECU trows at you when you gas cap is broken? so why did it come back 3 days later, did you fill it while it was running again?

Typically you get this code when there is a vacuum leak somewhere in the Evap system. Your issue may be as simple as the gas cap failing to seal properly.

Just a thought: Are you sure you installed the check valve with the flow going in the right direction?

Re: Are you throwing a CEL P0441? I have the fix!!!

n80 pushes it out right or is it sucking in? i figure that is vapors from gas tank so they need to be sucked out, that why i connected it to TIP the way so check valve lets turbo to suck vapors. i was just reading your post N80 link

reading it again made me think, you know how we closed few ports/nipples(suction?) on intake manifold, what if you connect N80 straight to one of those ports/nipples that way i'll be like it was designed(or atleast somewhat close to original design), what do you think?

Re: Are you throwing a CEL P0441? I have the fix!!!

The N80 is an on/off valve that the ECU controls by cycling it rapidly on/off (duty cycle). The check valve prevents the manifold boost from pressurizing the gas tank. You may be able to hook the line to the TIP and get enough vacuum. Depending upon the model year of your car the N80 has been hooked up several different ways. Mine has a connection to the TIP and another from the "Y" just after the N80 that ultimately attaches to the intake manifold. both lines are protected with a check valve.

Mine is just the opposite. It usually comes on after coming to a stop at a red light.

Yes, I put it back on the same way it came off. Almost impossible for me to have a vacuum leak. Already did the check valve removal, and all hose that remained was replaced with brand new hose. Hell I might try it backwards just for sh.ts and giggles.

That is exactly what I did at first, threw code 2 days later saying reverse flow detected. I will figure this out if it kills me. I am so tired of looking at the check engine light.

I only filled the tank once with the engine running, and never have again. But for some reason the CEL keeps coming back with this code. Maybe I need a new gas cap.

Why does everybody feel the need to remove the evap system. Does nobody care about the world anymore? You will not gain anything from doing this, besides a cleaner engine bay which nobody cares about in the world except you.

Wow, talk about bringing a thread back. I ended up buying all the hoses off a wrecked car and put everything back on. I wish I had never taken it off. The crazy thing is looking at it all, I still don't understand how everything works. The way things are hooked up stock make absolutely no sense to me, but if it keeps my check engine light off, so be it. One thing I did do though is tuck and re-route all the hoses so they are not visible. The engine bay looks super clean now. I just went down to orielly's and bought 10 feet of 3 different diameters of vacuum hose and now you can't see it any more. I wish I really understood the system though. It is frustrating to look at it and still not get it.
