Anyone ever have this CEL code go off and NOT need a new TC?

I know my input and output seals leak a little...could I just be low on fluid?
Also where is the selniod located? Is it under the hood near the center of the firewall?

Just trying to figure out if I need to give up on Audi :( as I also need control arms, a CV boot replaced, the input and output shaft seals replaced and the secondary water pump replaced. All in all if I truly need a new TC then I am looking at about $4500.

P.s. the only symptoms I have besides the CEL are that when I accellerate the car seems to vibrate very mildly.

P.p.s My wife is going to kill me as she was against this purchase to begin with :)

Re: P0741 Torque Converter (I searched already)

I got the same error right after buying mine. Didn't fix it right away and never really noticed any problems with it. I had to get it fixed eventually just to pass Massachusetts state inspection otherwise I think I would have let it go a bit longer. From what I've been told and understand it's not really hurting anything driving it like this.

$4500 is that a dealer price? I was able to get mine fixed with an Audi TC for $1600. I'd shop around for some prices on it. Not that it's like a $300 fix but then again what is on these cars?

The CV boot you should just do yourself. I'm terrible at working on cars for most things but I was bale to replace my axle and also do a boot repair.

Best of luck to you though.

Re: P0741 Torque Converter (I searched already)

No $4500 would be the ball park for the TC, CV boot, Control Arms, Secondary H2O and Input/output seals. (I have been quoted $2200 for all but the TC and am guessing another $2000 for the TC)

I am probably going to do the CV boot, Control arms and Secondary H20 pump myself. Unless I need a new TC then the whole thing may have to go. That is why I am hoping that it is something like the selnoid or just low on fluid due to the leak mentioned above. I have eaven read that a K&N can throw this code by fouling the MAF.

Any thoughts on that? Seems unlikely to me...but I did just throw a K&N in about 1000 miles ago.

Re: P0741 Torque Converter (I searched already)

torque converter seal or else the TC solenoid.

those have been the only found problems to the code.

ALSO. a solenoid has only been documented once on the the forum.

Most of the time it's the TC seal.

What is the location of the selnoid?
I ask becasue the CEL came on whule I was camping 60mi into the wilderness. So try and clear the light I disconected the baqttery and when I plugged it back in there was a nasty buzzing sound coming from a cylinder shaped....well I dont know what. It was near the firewall more on the drivers side, right up top. Buzzed for about 2 minutes then quieted down.

It is. Behind the filter, maybe? Saw a picture of it once, but can't for the life of me remember where it is...

Re: P0741 Torque Converter (I searched already)

I got the code last year... The only thing the seal does is lock the TC to give better MPG on cruising. You hardly notice/miss is.

I tried to refill the tranny = waste of time and money since it made no difference.

So then I pulled the motor+tranny and let "ACE Converter" rebuild the tranny for $400. Then while the motor is out, might as well do piggies and put k04's in there, right.

Why not learn to do the work yourself? With the transmission out of the vehicle, most shops wouldn't charge much for labor since its on the bench and doesnt need to be removed. Everything else you mentioned can be done pretty easily at home. Not like 15 minutes, but even a few days work is worth paying $4500!!!

Yeah my plan is to do most of it myself. But I can not do the TC myself. So 2000-2500 for that and another 750-1000 for the parts for the other jobs I need to do on my own will be a tough sell. Hopefully it will all work out though.

wecome to the TC seal club, my stg 3 car works well with a 517 trans shop tc and rebuild/upgraded trans. What realy sucks is my new stock avant i bought this may has the tc seal code pop up two weeks ago, so back to get 517 tc for that car. I have plans in the next year to year and a half to do a 6 speed convertion to it so I am keeping it stock engine untill them,

But I don't want to join this club!

OK so I found the little print out that I got from the scan. Curious if this changes anyones minds about the TC...I doubt it but here goes anyway

    Definition:
Torque Converter Clutch Circuit performance or stuck on
    Open or short Circuit condition

    Probable cause:
    1-Poor Electrical Connection
2- Failed torque converter clutch solenoid
    3- blocked oil passage

    Well son of a beeznatch....
Just got the call. The mechanic is not positive but suspects that it is the torque converter as it has known problems.

I told him go ahead and repair the tranny/differential leaks and clear the codes. A gamble I know but it is still possible that will take care of it (very very very small chance).

Maybe an extended warranty is a good idea.

    Aw frick!
So I had the transmission and differential leaks repaired and the light went off.

Stayed off past 30 miles......40 miles....50 miles....then boom around 60 it popped back on!

Drives me crazy. No performance issues, no limp, no surging, no fluctuating rpms....just some damned code telling me to spend money. :)
Like my cat meowing for food/attention in the morning.

Just wanted to give the update. I think I will be taking it to a tranny shop to see what they think......I still think that anyone who has had problems should start a class action lawsuit. For how rare it is supposed to be to have TC failures it sure seems common.

So...I made the mechanic give me my old TC. I was thinking of beating it with a ball-peen hammer or throwing it into the Puget Sound to help create an artificial reef :)
Is it worth anything? Do places like 517 buy these to rebuild and sell? Just curious.
    Thanks!
