SS lines won't help. Try some good pads or upgrade to a BBK.

you can't beat the S4's for value. the difference is amazing between puny stocks and just the S4 fronts.

I've had oem brakes with SS lines, and bbks with and without ss lines... They make a huge difference in brake feel.

i drove a B7 A4 w/ stock brakes and they are so much better with feel and stopping power its ridiculous. I also drove a B7 A4 w/ S4 front and rears and what a difference that was. I hate the slop in the stock b6 brakes. My next big purchase is gonna definitely be s4 brakes.

Re: So sick of brake pedal feel

I think your problem is that your fluid is cooked.

bleed the brakes and you'll feel a substantial difference. For sure.

Did you make sure to open up the brake fluid reservoir when you were replacing the brakes? if not, air might have gotten into the system and you'll have brake fluid all over the floor.

Be careful with brake fluid, that stuff eats up paint like chicken and waffles

flush your fluid, get some ss lines, and throw on some hps pads, can't really beat that for stock rotors/calipers.

Re: So sick of brake pedal feel

i did B5 S4 up front PBR metal masters/Zimmerman, B7 A4 rears with Zimmerman/TRW pads and car stops great but pedal feels like a sponge. I bleed the brakes 5 TIMES and there is no more air in there as far as i know. It is better than it was but still feels too soft. SS lines for my car are hard to find do to the odd brake setup.

I've read that the SS lines don't help that much. I do wish my brakes actually felt like I was braking. Everytime I drive another car I look like it's my first time because I'm used to the stock pedal.

you could try ss lines, but unless your oem lines are toast you won't see much improvment.

you say you did a flush today. Did you completely flush the system or actually just rebleed it slightly? Also what fluid are you running?

not knowing what pads you are running you may be just running a fairly compressible pad. For example when i ran the Axxis Ultimate they felt soft compared to the Ferrodo Ds2500 in the same calipers. The ferrodo was a less compressible brake pad compound.

had audi do the flush..im going to bleed them myself when i move to my house in two weeks...running stock pad...so maybe ill have to get some new pads..its funny, today they felt fine..we'll see how long that last...like i said the stopping is fine..it just seems like theres too much pedal travel before they come on

Re: So sick of brake pedal feel

hmm, I have the same deal as the OP. I dont like how soft the brake pedal is. I have to press 30 or 40% in to start feeling the braking, and then another 30% for it to brake really hard. In downtown driving, its annoying having to press the brake pedal pretty deep each time I need to brake.

    - Changed rotors (to Zimmerman) and pads (to Hawk HPS)
    - Bled the entire system
    - Changing all brake fluid to brand new stuff

So Q is, how can I make my brake pedal more responsive??

again, we're running 5+ year old cars...your lines are most likely worn out. spend the 90 bucks on SS lines and bleed...then come back and report

The initial response of the brakes to peddle movement that is vague and sluggish, can be caused by one or several failed check valves in the engine vacuum system, including the suction jet pump. There is also a revised version of the suction jet pump that has superseded the original part fitted. After replacing these parts on my '03, the brakes are much more responsive than before.

    Thanks for the replies, however:

    - I dont want to spend $90 unless am sure its the lines..
    - B5S4 brakes will make a huge difference, so u wont tell if it was coz of the SS lines or not
    - I dont think its the pads coz when the pedal goes deep enough, stopping power is excellent.

solid question. my car has 3.0L rotors, Hawk HPS pads all around, Superblue fluid, ect. the car stops perfectly fine, but that 1-2in of mushy brake pedal before they grab is annoying.

will SS lines truely firm it up? (I'm hearing '100% yes' and then 'not really')

Besides the vacuum system checks and suction jet pump, when I installed my caliper stiffening kit, (eliminated the rubber guide pin bushings) the initial grab was improved considerably. I really don't have any complaint with my stock size rotors/calipers now.

I hated the feel of the stock brakes. I got SS Lines, a better fluid, and some new pads. I kept the stock calipers. Cured the problem and braking performance is not bad either.

Some S4 fronts would be a good cost effective upgrade as well. It all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Re: So sick of brake pedal feel

My [stock] brakes are very responsive and sensitive. A contributing factor may be due to the Pentosin racing brake fluid that I am currently using. The current pads are OEM (they were on vehicle when it was purchased from the dealer). For daily driving, I feel they are more than adequate, but their performance deteriorates rapidly when taken on the track or autocross.

I too have b5s4 calipers with zimmermans and pbc ceramics with stainless lines and motuol 5.1 and im a little disappointed with the "spongy feel." for me its spongy about 30-40% then firms up, but it does stop well enough that i rarely have to break more that 30% pressure.

I have B6 S4 front brakes and they're spongier than my OEM's were. That being said, when you really get on them they stop the car like you just tossed an anchor out the back...

I would re-bleed the brakes first; if that doesn't help, try SS lines; if that doesn't help, call Stasis/Alcon or StopTech :-)
