Anyone out here try/have the 402 Mod ?

I want to lower the stance, my wife is short legged and has trouble getting it at the regular height.

What are the pros and cons to this modification ?

How low did you go and what is the average reduction. Roads here in Montreal are much like NYC, pretty bad.

    Re: 402 MOD .......

    i did 23mm front, and 20mm rear.

if the roads are that bad just do 15-18mm all around.

nope, not that low. im about to do mine 20mm or around there. 17's are nothing for the allroad. u can go real low on those.

So by going down to 20, I can use the level 2 during the daily driving, right!

you can still run on level one for daily driving. your still a good 6-7 inches off the ground even down 20mm.

    402'd the 1st week I got it:

Pro's = just the simple fact that it looks bad arse alone is enough & if it is too rough for the wifey she can just drive around on level 2

Cons = it rides rougher, but again if you are gonna be driving where you know it's bad roads simply go to level 2

but I also have 255/40/19's that doesnt help

it does make me want sway bars more
when I hit a bump the rear almost feels like a pick up truck (shifts around) in setting 1

Did it. Love it. But I wish I went lower. I went down 12mm in the front and 10mm in the rear, I plan to go another 5mm down on all 4 corners(so a total of 17mm front, 15mm rear)

Haha yeah, good catch. This is the 1st time they went back on this summer & I am gonna be getting them refinished so the tires are gonna be coming off this way we can flip them/rotate them & the show that I went to over the weekend was a really far drive & since the tires haven't been rotated for a year I figured I would just put them on the opposite side just for the trip.

As far as how far down I am I lost track, after a couple mm's here & there & trying to get each corner to match who knows, but if I had to guess I am probably close to 22mm front & 19 rear

^I heard 25mm was the maximum height that does NOT cause any problem/damage to the suspension(and bags) but 20mm is the lowest I'd go just to be safe.

Reminds me that time I saw a subaru outback in front me of me with brand new tires on (labels still slapped onto the thread) and put backwards. I actually jumped out of he car on red light and told the guy they are backwards and to go back to the idiots who put them on that way for a swap. He was genuinely shocked. He would hydroplane like crazy on these.

Sorry for bringing this thread back up from the dead, but I have a few questions..

    1) - Hows the alignment & tire wear on your cars, for those of you that have lowered it? And many have mentioned that their ride is rougher. Stiffer and better handling, or just rougher?

    2) What's the maximum that you can raise the car without throwing a code? And for those that have raised your car, how's your alignment?

Looking at buying an AR this weekend, and we have snow up here 6-8 months of the year. I wouldn't mind raising it in the winter and most of the time still probably drive on setting 1, except for those handful of days when it dumps a ft of snow have it on 4+, and then when the snow melts, i'll lower it ~20mm lower than stock, to a 1-.

I've lowered mine 20mm, have 4 Hankook icepike and if you know Montreal, we too get brutal winters too.
I see no need to worry about raising it, my Allroad will still plow thru the snow 6" deep on level two.

sorry but I think this mod is a huge SKIP. Yes it looks better but it increases the stress on what is already a stressed suspension. If you go too low, you WILL bend your frame and honestly, the car rides like crap because you are essentially rendering the springs useless at the lowered heights. You will also eat thru tires more quickly.

To each his own though. If you do lower the car, drive it in level 2, park in level 1.

It is a skip if you do it on stock components, I agree. Stock shocks seems to not work at factory level 1 ok anymore and the car becomes bouncy. Maybe they run out of travel range and hit bump stops or something. Then there is a problem of camber.

Few months back I swapped the shocks to Bilsteins from Arnott and riding on any height is no problem anymore. Car at level 1 or 10mm below rides just fine, no more bounciness anymore.

When I was installing the shocks, I was amazed at the amount of travel the air bag actually has. If you ever had your bag gone bad, you can see how much the suspension can travel until the shocks hit bump stops.... it as quite a lot and the bag could easily go further if not for the shock limiting it.

Great feedback on the Bilstiens, thank you ** we recently put them in a friends allroad along with the GEN II bags, he only has about 1K miles on them so far, so verdict was still out. And yes, I agree with you, my comments are intended for those on stock components. I have the GEN II air springs up front with the OEM shocks and the car handles level 1 better, but I still would not 402 mod the car lower.

You will also eat thru tires more quickly.

To each his own though. If you do lower the car, drive it in level 2, park in level 1.

Here's where the legend about "bending the frame" came about. someone bought a USED allroad that had been 402'd and the frame was bent, allegedly because the suspension was so low it would bottom out and hit the bumpstops, which transferred the force to the frame. there was never any proof that the 402 mod caused the bent frame, only fact is that the frame was bent when purchased.

I was active on AW at the time and there is alot more to the story than just that thread, and if you think about it logically, bottoming out the shocks repeatedly if bound to have adverse effects on the frame. This is a purely cosmetic mod, so I really just can't comprehend risking that much damage to the suspension, tires, frame to have the car look better. But like I said to each his own. Lastly the OP asked about the pros/cons. Pros ** looks nice, Cons ** it places strain on the entire undercarriage.
