    Why is it chirping??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have recently noticed that once the car gets to full operating temp, the timing belt sounds like it is chirping. I moved the T cover away to hear where the noise is coming from and I am unable to find it, althogh I have not removed the cover yet, I was wondering if anyone has seen this before, the T belt and water pump and all rollers and tentionners were replaced 15 000 miles ago. So quiet when cold chirping when hot? Any help guys will be appreciated.

Strange. Does it vary with RPM?

    Re: Why is it chirping??

not really, only variance is wien the car is hot or cold, initial start up no chirp sound, once the temp is at the mid hot cold mark on the dash it is pretty much full chirp mode, I am worried either the idler pulley or the roller is going.... or maybe the water pump is defective and make more noise as the heat builds, or water pressure builds, not sure.

Spray a little water on the serpentine belt when it running to see if it goes away or gets worse.

    Re: Why is it chirping??

on the accessory belt, or on the timing belt, because the noise is not cominig from the accessory belt, it is coming from the timing belt / cover area.

Hey ziggi, did you ever resolve this problem? I have a similar symptom (i.e cold start= no chirp / norm operating temp= chirp). I've researched all over the damn place and tried several methods to address the issue but to no avail. I initially thought it was my serp belt tensioner, then my pcv system but I replaced those and then I also isolated the noise with a stethoscope to the T-belt housing. Any insight would be awesome.

Haha indeed. My t-belt, rollers, & WP were all done about 30k ago as well. I'm thinking it could maybe be the lower t-belt cover rubbing on something?

Ya I finally got it sorted out, the issue was a defective water pump that was leaking, even though I had just changed it. I redid the tb job new water pump and belt and Bo noose.

    I had dome indications prior:

Water level would decrease more than normal evaporation
There is a drain notch in the lower tb cover that was all crusted with coolant
Leak marks on oil pan from coolant.

Try and see if you have any signs that the timing belt is getting saturated with coolant, this is what caused my noise issues.

    Hope it helps!

Thanks a lot! Now that you mention it, I think I have noticed some coolant residue on the oil pan before - I'll take a gander at the lower tb area and see what I find. If it is the WP... so much for the 75k maintenance interval. Eh, such is life

You know, these defective water pump stories are becoming alarmingly prevalent. I'm curious if theres a pattern of manufacturer or retailer who sells these defective pumps. Sounds like theres a few defective batches of pumps floating around...

This is not a rip On anyone but the defect pump was from ecs, since then.I only use oem pumps, considering how much work is involved to replace it, it makes more sense to me.

No I was just curious. I doubt any vendors are KNOWINGLY selling defective pumps. I just think its something worth looking into as I would be beyond pissed if my WP grenaded after 30K and took my engine with it.

I'm not tryign to throw any vendors under the bus, I just want to make sure when I do my timing belt, I don't need to do it again a few years later...

So I just wanted to update that I replaced my water pump the other day and it seems to have remedied my symptoms so far. My WP didn't seem to be in bad shape at all though - seal was still intact and the impeller didn't look busted. Eh whatever, I have a new metal impeller WP in there now so hopefully it lasts awhile.
