Audi B6 S4 DIY Serpentine Belt

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Here it is guys, a DIY to do the Serpentine belt yourself. I would recommend getting a friend to help you out with the job. It will make it go a lot faster and its easier to take off and remove the front bumper. This was complied by myself and littleredwagen

    Tools Required:

    Jack
    2 Floor Jack Stands
    1/4 Ratchet
    3/8 Ratchet
    3/8 6' Extension
    TORX20 Socket
    TORX25 Socket
    TORX30 Socket
    TORX45 Socket
    6mm Hex Socket
    Philips Screw Driver
Flat Head Screw Driver (Stubby is preferable)
    10mm ratchet wrench
    10mm socket
    13mm socket (shallow)
    17mm socket
    18mm socket (shallow)
    Long Torque Wrench
    Breaker Bar

    Parts: Serpentine Belt
    Audi Part Number = 079-903-137-A
NOTE: Order belt according to VIN number. There is a split date.

    Torque Specs:
    Tensioner Assembly- 22nm (If Replaced)
    Idler Roller- 20nm (If Replaced)

Step 1: Jack the front end up

First and foremost, jack the front end of the car up. This will make it easier to take off the bumper. It is not necessary, but you will see why we did it this way in a bit. Place 2 jack stands on the front pinch welds.

Step 2: Remove Drivers side wheel

Remove the drivers side wheel for now. Breaker bar and 17mm socket to remove lugs. We will come back to it in a bit.

    Step 3: Remove belly pan

Crawl under the front of the car and remove the belly pan. There are several bolts holding it in. Grab your flat head and twist them out.

    Step 4: Remove Intake Snorkle

Lets start with the passenger side and remove the intake snorkel. Grab your philips screw driver and remove the two screws holding the snorkel in place.

Once the screws are out, disconnect it from the car.

    Step 5: Remoe Airbox adapter

Now take the adapter out that is shown above. To do so simply pull upward away from the air box.

    Step 6: Remove Headlights

Next step is to remove the headlight. There are four TORX30 bolts holding the headlight in. The top two need to be completely removed. The rear ones only need to be loosened in order to remove the headlight.

To reach the rear two TORX30 bolts, grab your 3/8 rachet with a 6" extension.

Once the top bolts are removed and the rear two are loose, pull the headlight assembly forward. Time to disconnect the headlight harness. It can be a pain, please follow the link below for a video on how to do it.

    Video to remove harness

Once the harness is disconnected, remove the head light from the car. Follow the same procedure for the drivers side. Below is a picture where the hidden TORX30 bolt is.

Once both headlights are removed you can pull the weather seal off the engine bay.

Step 7: Remove Fender Liner Bolt

Okay, move to the passenger side wheel well. To make things easier, cut the wheel to the left to make room. Grab your stubby flat head and remove this fender liner bolt.

Once that is removed, pull the fender liner back to reveal this TORX25 bolt. Grab your 1/4 ratchet and TORX25 socket and remove it.

Step 8: Free Lower Bumper from Fender

Once that is removed, its time to pull the lower half of the bumper away from the fender. Review the image below. Slightly pull the lower portion of the bumper toward you. It will give away from the tabs.

Step 9: Follow the same procedure for the drivers side.

Step 10: Remove Inner Fender Bolts

Okay your done on the bottom half for now. Back to the passenger side. Take a peak on the inner fender where the headlight was. You will see three 10mm nuts down the side of the fender. Grab a 10mm ratchet wrench and remove these three bolts as shown below.

Okay lets go back to the driver side now. You can either follow our way or do it the other way. The problem with the drivers side is that the three 10mm bolts connecting the fender and bumper are difficult to get to. Its clearly not as easy as the passenger side. You can either work in the tight space to remove the bolts or follow the next instructions. If you remove the bolts here skip down to Step 12.

Step 11: Remove the fender liner

There are a bunch of TORX20 bolts holding the fender liner in. Once its loose, remove it from the car. You will now see something like this.

Get a bucket handy as you will want have something to drain the washer fluid back into. Slide the left side reservoir out and disconnect it from the quick connect nozzle as shown below.

You now have easy access to the three 10mm bolts. Its much easier this way. It is also much helpful doing it this way when reinstalling the bumper.

Step 12: Remove Fog Light Surrounds

Once your done, its time to remove the fog light surrounds. Grab a flat head screw driver. You will notice the screw is vertical. Twist the screw to the horizontal position as shown below and it will pop free. Remove it from the car.

    Step 13: Remove Bumper bolts

The bumper is almost ready to come out. There are two HEX bolts holding the bumper on located where the fog light surrounds were. Grab your 3/8 ratchet and HEX6 socket. Loosen them but do not remove them. A picture is shown below where they are located.

    Step 14: Remove Bumper

The bumper can now be removed from the front end of the car. There are two connectors on the drivers side that need to be disconnected in order to move the bumper away from the car.

Step 15: Remove AUX Radiator Shrouds

Once the bumper is placed to the side we can start working on the RAD support. There are two radiator shrouds that must come out on each side of the front end in front of the AUX radiators. Grab your 10mm socket and remove these bolts. Repeat on Drivers side.

Step 16: Remove Upper Rad Support Bolts

Okay now the upper rad support bolts can come out. Grab your TORX30 socket and remove both bolts. Repeat on the drivers side.

Dont put your TORX30 down, there is another bolt down by where the AUX rad shrouds were. Remove it. Repeat on drivers side.

Step 17: Remove Main Rad Support Bolts

Grab your Torx45. Its time to take out the RAD support bolts. There are three on each side. You might need a breaker bar to get them loose. Repeat on drivers side.

    Step 18: Slide Radiator Forward

Once the six RAD bolts are out, you can now slide the Radiator forward. You should make a gap around 3 or 4 inches as shown below. If needed, place a bucket under the RAD to support it.

    Step 19: Removing the Belt

Okay. Here is where you will need two people. Grab your torque wrench and put a 18 mm socket on it. Also grab your 3/8 ratchet and put a 13mm socket on it. First, loosen the 13mm bolt on the bottom as shown, but do not remove it.

Once it is loose, grab your torque wrench and put your socket on the adjustment bolt head shown below.

IMPORTANT: In order to loosen the belt you need to go CLOCKWISE (Tighten) on this bolt head. Once you do that the belt will pop loose.

    Step 20: Install new belt.

Pay attention to how the belt is run before you pull it off. Once its off, install the new belt in the same fashion. Audi rings should be facing the drivers side. He is a picture if you forget how it went.

    Step 21: Tighten New Belt

Once the belt is run, have a friend get the 18mm socket back on the adjustment bolt head and go COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to 70nm. Once its tightened, take your 13mm socket and tighten the 13mm bolt to 20nm (hand tight).

That's it, the belt is now installed! You now can follow this DIY in the reverse and reassemble the car. While your here this would be a good time to put an aftermarket snub mount on.

I hope this helps everyone. Good luck! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

How many miles were on the car? My belt @ 55 looks very similar to his old one.

Thanks for taking the time to document all that! Bums me out I just didn't do it when I did my snub a few weeks ago.

do you have a front shot or diagram of how the belt is run? Mine snapped yesterday and I'm thinking about doing this myself. Unless it can be covered by CPO. Car has 55k on the clock. I know the 75K service is to just check the belt, replace if needed, but..

perfect timing. I just had a belt come off my wife's Mazda, so I finished dealing with that. I realized I forgot to tighten one bolt. Damn - I really prefer the spring loaded tensioner instead of manual tensioner. So glad to see the S4 has a spring loaded tensioner - they work so much better. Anyway - I was thinking I need to do that for the S4 now that I am over 70K mies, so I took a look at it just now and was thinking - wow - can't even see the belt, I bet a bunch of sh!t has to come off. I was right. And it is great to have this write up, I am sure it will save me some time in the R&R of all that crap just to get to the damn belt. I need to do the oil within the next few weeks anyway, so I will schedule some extra time to do the belt while I am at it.

So what is the snub mount, and why should I change it?

Snub is your forward most engine mount. An aftermarket one reduces the "jolts or jarred" motions you feel when shifting. Stock ones are rubber. Aftermarket is a thicker material which reduces the "play" and will not wear as easy as the OEM one. Its easy to do while your there and they only cost 30 bucks.

Any harsh vibrations with aftermarket snubs?

Re: Audi B6 S4 DIY Serpentine Belt

OK this is kind of ridiculous but I can't get the bumper off. Granted this is the first time on B6 but it's not that complicated. Anyway, all bolts/torx and headlights have been taken out but the center of the bumper, right above the where the license plate goes will not budge. There is something back there holding it and I mean it's really holding it. I though maybe there were snaps but I've pulled on it to the point of it breaking and will not move at all.
    Any ideas?

    BTW this is on 2004.

    Check Step 13...

Did you remember to loosen the 2 hex bolts that are accessed through the fog grills? You have to loosen them significantly in order for the bumper to give. Im guessing they are not loose enough.

Try that and let me know if it works.

This is a great DIY. Very well done. This should be the same for a B7 except maybe for getting the bumper off, right?

They are completely removed. When I pull on the bumper both sides and the bottom of it are loose and move freely. Top part of it won't budge.
At this point I went over everything at least 3 times and I got everything

Hmm, very weird. By chance are there any screw holding the bumper on from the bottom where the belly pan is?

Nope, the bottom of it is loose. I can pull on it and it moves freely so there is nothing there holding it back. Like I said, the only place that I feel any tension is the top but I can't see anything back there that holds it. There were these plastic tabs that kind of looked like this O===) which I removed but they didn't release it.

I think I just might take it to the dealer since I know the snub is cracked and let them take it off. It's still under warranty. Thanks anyway

This pisses me off, I've never taken the car for anything to someone else

Can you confirm which bolt to remove first and which one to turn? I have a better pic:

Might want to replace the valve cover gaskets.
