I can't read HEX for the life of me either! Been playing with both WinOLS and Tunerpro trying to see what fits me. Thus far Tunerpro seems easier, but you need the XDF. If you could find it that would rock! I would have something to play with at work :)

ive done quite a bit of trolling on google and have not come across much in terms of that stuff, I have tracked down some stuff but most of it is for M box

The bins are available for just about anything and everything, just none of the definition files. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will chime in with some more info........
We used to use INCA to calibrate and tune our ECU's back when I worked for Siemens. I can tell you that it's a super tool.
Here's more info: For INCA to be able to communicate with the ECU, you will need an empty PCMCIA slot where you'll insert a VEKTOR CANcardXL PCMCIA card. VEKTOR has cables, drivers and everything you need to connect your ECU to INCA using your laptop. You'll also need a power supply.
Read out my OTS tune. After reading lots of threads about people not being able to get them to download, I was a bit worried, it took 3 or 4 tries via KWP2000, and it actually worked better in fast mode. Step 2 is going to be to download my stock H box (via bench mode after I make my cable) and compare the files and see what the tuner did.
You might look over on Nefmoto's site to see if someone has already uploaded an H box bin. If you feel like sharing the tuned bin I'd love to see what was modified in it as well.

I haven't seen any H's posted yet... anyway, want to build a bench cable anyway as I don't plan on flashing in car. Once I get under way, I wouldn't mind swapping some tunes to compare notes.

p.s. the first page has a list of all the maps changed by an OTS tune, it doesnt say most of the values, but it shows which maps.
also tunerpro has some nice compare features for crossing bin's to look for changes, that would really help what you are doing. GOOD LUCK! and be sure to post your results!

Yep, noted, going to look for those maps in particular. Another member shared his winols mappings for the h-box, so going to use that as a reference. I feel good about editing the maps, gonna take baby steps, but I feel ok with that. The checksums are giving me a little angst, I haven't really done too much research into that , there seems to be a lot of grey area in that dept unless you want to pay for ecufix. My end goals are to get a better tune on my car and post up a step by step for flashing and editing. The more people we have doing their own custom tunes, the faster we are going to get.

im with you there, i miss the opensource community of the subaru world. As far as checksums are concerned, i might just fork out the $$ for ecufix. I already have my new maps setup for raising boost, and i tweaked the timing down a bit to make sure i dont get high correction factors. Now i just need to be able to flash... currently laptop is on the firtz and not recognizing the kwp2000 cable.

So while on the subject of checksums, assuming I get them close enough (for the point of arguement). What exactly are the safeguards on the ME7.1 to prevent me from putting bad code in? Are the checksums run at:
-pre-flash - flashing tool?
-after loading - ecu fails to boot because of crap code?
-somewhere furth down the line?
Sometimes, one of my favorite words when it comes to computers. So the image you feed into KWP2000 (and btw, which one the KWP2k+ or the chiptuners app?) and load into your ECU, then read it back and the image is actually different?
Yes I have read the same, but it has yet to mess up for me yet, my main issue with KWP has been going over voltage and having it crash out

There are three different types of checksums in the ME7 ECU. Two of the types cover all of the flash data and are checked when the ECU receives power, and will prevent the car from starting. The last one only covers the map data in the flash and is checked every few engine starts, and it will also prevent the car from starting.
If there is a bad checksum, an error code will be set. Some of the error codes cannot be cleared, and will prevent the car from starting even after you have corrected the checksums.

Thanks NefMoto, that is what I was after, so indeed you can load a bad map in the ecu. I'm assuming a bench flash (back to a good flash) can take care of the bad flash though, right?

The error codes are stored in the separate 4K eeprom. When you flash the ECU you only overwrite the 1meg flash chip. I ran into problems a few years back where an invalid checksum error code was set, and clearing the error codes would not remove it. I had to reprogram the 4k eeprom manually to remove it. The car would not start with the error code stored.

I'd love to try it out but I'm on XP and don't anticipate switching, especially the car laptop as just about everything else Audi specific runs on XP.
I am considering doing some refactoring to support XP in the future. But I will not do that until all of the immediate issues are worked out with the current releases.

vag -vom data logging will work on vista and windows seven. as well as most map editing programs. what else do you need?
Read quite a few posts about a lot of apps not playing nice, and since everything else is known to work in XP (vagcom, ECUx, galetto, kwp2000, etc), and last but not least, I don't want to send Redmond anymore money for no gain. Last thing I'm going to do is switch OS's to use a flash tool when I already have two others. Now if we were talking about a good mapping suite, I'd start thinking about it.

Thanks man, it would be cool, but I totally understand, you have much bigger fish to fry right now.
