Smell Coolant? No Leak? I have your answer

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know this has probably already been discussed but it has been bothering me for 2 months. Everytime my car was HOT i noticed when i got out of my car that it had a sweet coolant smell. Could never find a leak. Always had this white/pinkish trail down the side of my block near the thermostat housing, thought is was the runoff from when i blew off my shitty plastic vent cap on the top hose (another story). But no i finally found it. Its that stupid block plug right next to the thermostat held in with 1 bolt. Changed it and that was the end of that. Hope this helps somebody.

Re: Smell Coolant? No Leak? I have your answer

Its basically under the intake manifold, behind the alternator, next to the thermostat housing. Yea it was kind of a bitch to get to, only held in with a 13mm bolt. But getting to it sucked. I took out the throttle body and thermostat housing cuz mine actually cracked off in the block, what a bitch. Just take your time. Afterwards noticed car has better heat, and no smell now . Audi actually has a TSB too, thats how i found it, cuz i have access to ELSA web. Heres some pics:

Yea it takes some time, To make it easy start buy removing the throttle body and hose, remove the intake man. support. Remove wires in your way. Then remove all hoses to thermostat housing. Remove thermostat housing from block. Then you can get to it, you can also remove the alternator, i didnt but its alot more room. Oh and remove the dipstick, just dont crack it!! Good luck, any questions, just ask.

I have no temp change or smell. Just a slow PITA leak.

Re: Smell Coolant? No Leak? I have your answer

If you look where the oil stick is follow it to the close to block you should be able to see the thermostat & that plug, also sign of coolant leak. If you have the small hand & quick you could sneak it out & replace new one. I think its better than draining the whole coolant because if you do it way i did you won't be loosing that much coolant.

I just had my coolant flange repaired and I still have a coolant smell, all the spills were cleaned so could it be this?

    Negatory.

It can be done with only removing the coolant reservoir and the block breather hose.

The bolt backed out on mine and the plug was moving around leaking coolant. So, I replaced both the j-plug and the bolt. J-plug was $9 from my dealer. Bolt I had in my box-o-bolts from disassembling various Audis and VWs. Plug was perfectly fine but since I was there and had a new one I replaced it (old one has 160k on it)

The 13mm stubby wrench on the bolt.

Took me about 45minutes including riding my bicycle to the grocery store and back to pick up distilled water for the coolant system.

Thanks for posting the "easy" way Doug.

I wonder if this is yet one more part I should plan on replacing next time I'm in there...160k and I'm pretty sure its never been replaced (unless it would be common practice to replace it with the thermostat housing?).

It is not common practice to replace the thermostat or this item when you do a timing belt. Its also not common practice to replace this when you do a thermostat. Its up to the end user to determine when they want to replace it.

Mine had 160k on it and it looked perfectly fine. And that was after swapping it between three different motors.

Dayam. I've been going crazy looking for the source of that smell (was never losing any coolant so it must have been losing only a few drops here and there). Think I'll wait until I've got the front of the car apart for the timing belt and do it all at once (usual TB stuff + thermostat + plug + any other incidentals).

Great to run into this thread....I could smell the coolant but no leak?! Since nothing was dripping I just put it off and topped off my coolant for the time being. I'm going to check and see how that plug is sitting on the block and hopefully that is the culprit.
