Thanks
sorry, I don't know. they never told me what the exact codes were. all I was told was "g28 engine speed sensor" if that helps.

Haha, well not necessarily, it's probably a similar sensor....I don't know. But the code IIRC shows up as engine speed sensor. I don't remember the fault code though.

Re: Intermittent starting issues
hahahah! i tried the dealer for the speed sensor too and they gave me the same one as audiv8s. i told them it was the wrong one and gave them the correct part number. they had to special order the part. how hard was it to change out the sensor? my car is just dead now, it wont even start up anymore. lucky it was out side my house and not anywhere else. can you give me the step by step or more pics to help me?

Re: Intermittent starting issues
not hard to do. the hardest part was finding were it goes. just undo the coolant reservoir, find the grey plug on the fire wall, and follow the wire to the back of the engine/top of the transmission. That is it in the pictures above. it's a little tight back there, make sure you have a magnet on a stick and some long extensions. there's only one 10mm bolt to undo.

Re: Intermittent starting issues
man... i'm in the middle of replacing that dam sensor. you must have a 6-speed because i have alot of more crap in the way. I still have the heat shield there too, so i can't even see the sensor from up top. i broke the dang coolent tee off the reservoir tank too. the dang wire from the sensor runs under a vacuum reservoir or something, and i need to r&r the y-intake pipe to r&r the part to fish out the sensor wire. i might need to try and get it from the bottom. i can at least see the sensor down there.

Re: Intermittent starting issues
that sucks. I didn't think about it, but I don't have my heat shields in. If it make you feel any better I broke my coolant T too when I did my sensor. to get the old sensor out, I ended up cutting the wire because I couldn't get the plug out from the piping. I just re-routed the new wire along the same path, but plugged it in from the back side of the piping. Hope that makes sense, and helps you out.

Re: Intermittent starting issues
hahaha, i had to cut my plug too. yeah i noticed that on tiptronics, they have this vacuum pump on the back side of the motor with 2 tubes running from side to side. i had to r&r the vac pump and plastic hoses. i had to take my heat shield off too to install the new sensor. it wasm't the funniest jobs to do. wont want to replace one for a while.

Re: Intermittent starting issues
Just an FYI,
I replaced the other sensor and the car has been running great ever since.
Thanks for all the help.

Old post, I know, but I'm going to keep this one going with some more info ;-)
After I start the car from totally cooled and drive it for just a couple miles, the engine sometimes won't start (keeps cranking). If I drive it a longer distance and the car has a chance to totally warm up, it doesn't have a problem starting again. Or, if the car sits until it's totally cool, it will start again. I haven't stalled out yet and I don't have a check engine light. However, I pulled this code...
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal
P0322 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Along with 17521 / P1113 and 16826 / P0442 (perhaps unrelated).
Either way, I just ordered the sensor and will replace it this weekend. I'll keep you posted on how it works out.

So what happened...?

I replaced the sensor and the car starts right up every time - it was definitely the engine speed sensor (crank position sensor).

What's the size and length of this bolt?
