I removed the bolt as described in the writeup. I didnt think it was hard at all. Just use a wrench from the top side. Dont try getting to it from under the car.

yeah the bolts arent that hard to get to just a pain. i will say though when gutting the pre cats if you can weld i would cut them and reweld cause using a drill and a screwdriver was a PITMFASSSS
Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev
It took me a week to do the piggies job basically in my spare time after work and on weekend when I had time.
It is definetly a job that takes time. After doing it, I still think it wasnt that hard to do, but like anything if you run into a problem - stripped bolt, dont have right tools - it could make it much more difficult.
I saw someone posted they had a hard time getting to the top bolt on drivers side turbo. I guess I dont remember it being too difficult. I got it from the top side, and once the coolant tank was out of the way I didnt think it was hard to get to, but I dont remember exactly either.
Good to see people are using the writeup still wish they would put it in the tech section.

this may have been covered but why are you guys leaving in the rear cats? i was planning on leaving in the precats and just hammering out the rear cats.
and if vast is just breaking the precats up, and leaving the main cats in, are they that restrictive that removing a precat gains you 30hp at the crank? thats crazy. are the gains equal removing the rear cats only? hell having no cats and using ssac's straight pipes should produce some serious power
Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev
The precats are right after the turbos and cause alot of heat and backpressure. People then leave the main cats so to pass smog. Dyno results show the gains.

I guess to me gutting the precats helps lessen the heat buildup directly behind the turbos by the precats because of the restriction. That is the main reason why I gutted them. This technically helps in prolonging turbo life.
You obviously wont see as much gain as if you gut both precats and main cats, if you are going through hassle of gutting both, then you might as well just do SSAC DP's much less hassle.
I kept the main cats in to help with the smell and to be somewhat "green" but still help a little with performance and longer turbo life.

i didnt think they were that restrictive. as audi explains it the precats are for cold start, hence why the secondary air injection pumps and the car runs richer to get them hot quick and reduce emmissions at cold start and warm up. subaru uses a really high flow cat for this i guess audi uses a full cat.
would gutting the rear cat be worth any gains? i was just going to unhook the clamps and bang out the cores without removing them from the car. i figure a restriction is a restriction. but yes i should probably jsut do the catless downpipes.
Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev
it wouldnt be hard, ive done it to a bunch of cars. granted i dont go all out and use a wire wheel to clean eveyrthing but once you start breaking it up it all just kinda falls apart quickly. then you just fire up the car with the pipes hanging off and blow out the mess.

This car isn't like most cars..It aint gonna be easy to do withe them on the car, I'm willing to bet next to impossible. It'll be easier in the long run to just take them off the car. And you don't want lose catalytic material rattling around in your turbo's exhaust stream.
Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev
i scoped it out its not an issue. the right cat has a longer pipe which does make it hard to get the usual pry bar up in there. the left one wont take too long. ive already got a long pipe ready to go for the right side.
i work on these things every day its not like im going to jack it up and crawl under and find out what i can do. just gonna put it on a lift and go at it.

Well good luck, but for my time, I would just take them off and have at it. And you could do the pre-cats at the same time. These sit DIRECTLY behind the turbos and are the main restriction.

for anyone that does piggies, be sure to order new dp gaskets. most people don't need them but mine were shot and i i had the the horror of having a huge exhaust leak. i finished replacing them this weekend and it only took me 6 hours vs ~ a week for the first time i did them. for anyone that has trouble getting the top dp bolt off, do yourself a favor and run by Lowes and get a 17mm swivel ratchet wrench. it was only 15 bucks and it made life so much easier
