Well to update the progress, I finished cleaning out the other cat, so now I just need to polish the inside of both so they are nice and clean. They look good now, but just want to make sure and get every last piece of particle so nothing is floating around freely in there. I tried a wire brush, but it just isnt working, I need to get some brush on a long drill bit or something so I can reach up in there.

Also I updated the DIY. I made a mistake on one of the tools. You need 5mm and 6mm allen sockets, not torx that was my bad.

Also MHolme, you are a genius. I went to advanced auto, looked in the help section and got those exact sparkplug defoulers you got, bought 4 so I will use 2 per side. I guess you did this to make sure it doesnt throw a code, and makes sense to me too. Anyway total cost $8.38 Not $29.95 a piece like vast sells for. for total of 60 bucks plus shipping I would imagine!!! Talk about highway robbery!!!

Just finished putting the last axel guard back on...big thanks for the write-up man, have been planing on doing it for a while but couldnt muster up the balls to dive in to it. But after looking at this thread I decided to give it a try. Had 4 days off so figured I wouldnt be rushed, hit some snags but went by pretty smooth thanks to the DIY and all pics. Spoooool!

I would have to agree, nice write-up. Just a question, i was wondering since you are still on stock catback exhaust have you heard a change in exhaust note? and is the power more noticeable? I know these are dumb questions but someone has to ask them.

I'll let Scott do the honor of telling you but from what he told me, theres IS a more noticeable gurgle to the exhaust note...as for the noticeable power...he can tell you

Yes I can hear a difference in the exhaust tone. It gives it a little more of a rumble. Nothing huge by any means, but you can tell the difference.

As to the power, I wouldnt exactly say its a night and day difference, but it does pull a little stronger and doesnt feel as restrictive. If I were smart I would of did some runs before and then after and timed them that way I could see get some numbers. But I didnt think of it at the time.

I think its well worth it though.

I need to change my front driver side o2 sensor and I was just looking in my engine bay. Do I need to remove the heat shield to get to it or am I just not seeing it?

Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev

I just put new front 02's in last night. The drivers side is a little harder to get to but you do not need to remove heat shield, or do anythign with it for that matter. You do need to move the plastic radiator overfill tank (3 screws) and swing it out of the way.

What I did is moved the tank out of the way, then you can get down by the drivers side 02 with the socket from there and put it over the 02 with your fingers.

Then take some long extensions and reach it from behind the Y pipe. I did both in about 45 minutes so you shouldnt have much of a problem.

It is hard to see, but there are 3 black hoses down behind the engine look behind/under them and you should see it. It plugs to a connection on the firewall on the drivers side. If you cant find it follow the wire down and it will lead you to it.

I am just going to throw this out there. If anyone plans to do this themselves, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.

That "stuff" your drilling out of the pre-cats is considered a HIGHLY VALUABLE, PRECIOUS METAL.

I know people who will pay you top dollar for your "stuff".

A friend of mine designs and analyzes emission catalysts and their precious metal properties, manily for industrial applications, but for automotive platforms as well.

    http://www.environex.com/catalyst_development.htm

If your looking to sell your scrap, I may be able to help you get some cash.

    PM ME for more details

He offered to buy my "scrap" Let me see if hes interested in yours

What is the difference between both of the non-foulers. Is one set longer than the other set?

the shorter defouler goes into cat, then longer defouler into the shorter defouler (hope that doesnt confuse you)
Reason for this is you need to screw the O2 into the longer defouler. because the other one is too short and wont reach the threads of the 02.
    hope this helps...

You plan on doing this yourself, Stone?

Re: The Ultimate DIY for removing dp's to make Piggies for 6spd manual-with pics (Rev

    This is what I did:
    1. remove the accordian hose for intake for passenger side.
    2. Then move the coolant overfill tank out of the way on the drivers side.
    3. I would then go down on drivers side under the master cylinder with the 02 socket and place it on the 02 with your fingers - Be sure and leave the part where the extension plugs into towards the front of the car so you can put your extension in the slot.
    4. now move to passenger side with your extensions and fish the extensions down at an angle towards the 02 socket. (What I did is squeezed the extensions between the two thick hoses that run behind the motor) and then fit the extensions in the slot for the 02.
    5. Put your ratchet on the extensions, then find a big pipe to fit over the ratchet.
    6. now use those muscles of yours and it should break free then after its loose you can screw them off with your fingers. Just make sure you have the socket on there correct so you dont round the edges.

    Done.

Just a little tip, much sure you don't put to much torque on the driver side 02s when your tightening them. Don't ask me how, but i stripped the drivers side and had a heck of time tapping it and getting another in.

So your way worked brilliantly. I did however break a plastic T-piece that connects the coolant overflow to the other coolant lines and had to goto audi to get it. All in all i wasnt as bad as I made it out to be.

    Thanks again.

Yeah somone a week ago or so said a shop told them they had to take the DP's off to change the front 02's? or was going to charge them an arm a leg and a left nut.

I coudlnt believe it. Its really not that hard of a job. Glad you were able to get them changed
