Which GT turbo in my situ: GT2554, GT2845, or GT2560?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If you we me which turbo would you get considering my situation: My car will be my daily driver, and minimal lag is definitely an important factor for me. My engine will not be built. I plan on doing a decent amount of road racing, as well as a little drag racing.

Also, hypothetical situation #2, if I were to put rods in, would you definitely go with 2560 (remember that it's a DD and road racing)?

GT2854 may be a good choice...genjdm has a few hybrid options available too. I plan on running a gt2560 or the gt2860 but with the small compressor cover...310hp per turbo

GT2860-7 310chp rating which is under rated a tad should of been 330chp Percision turbo and my self thinks they made an error on this between the gt2560-9 and the gt2860-7 they should of been gt2560-9 310chp and gt2860-7 330chp..... You can't go wrong with the gt2554 or gt2854 if you wish for more go with the GT2860-7, don't confuse this turbo with the other gt2860ss that r rated at 360chp because there not the same....

^Yup, if you're looking for good power and fast spool don't be scared or fooled by some of the GT28's...when I did my homework I was scared of the words GT28 and wanted to stick with GT25's...but it turns out some GT28's are smaller

If its your daily driver go with the smallest turbo so it's not a lag monster.

Haha whats wrong with lag? Imho lag=good for dding. When I drove my bt a4 I got nearly 30mpg because I never had to get into boost. I don't know why all you s4 guys are so afraid of lag(unless you're an autoxer or roadracer...) Just my 2 cents.
    OP: I'd go 2560.

Re: Which GT turbo in my situ: GT2554, GT2845, or GT2560?

There will be no log/monster with any of the turbos mentioned above, some will be the exact opposite. The GT2554ss will make more power from the low3kss on then the smaller rs4 turbo and will out shine the regular rs6 turbos everywhere from what has been posted... You should always look at what a turbo makes at a certain rpm verse spool, if you had a fully spooled turbo and it made 300whp at 25psi at 3k and you had another turbo that wasn't all the way spooled but made 330whp at 18psi at 3k rpms wouldn't this be what you should look for, I know what turbo I would be using?

So you guys suggested just about all of the GT turbos that would be options ha. Doesn't really help narrow it down;) Also, the kit I may go with may not fit GT28's, so that might be out.

I dont understand why most ppl have such a problem with a little lag even on a 2860 with a good tune and a good set of cams lag should be minimal .. but once those 28s kick in - game ovaa

I agree with everyone complaining about lag on here like a bunch of babies.. But, there is no cam on the market for the s4's that im aware of that will help the lag situation unless you get a custom grind, any cams around should worsen the low end.

So why is everyone slacking on getting custom cams to match their GT setups ?

    So in order of ascending power/lag it goes: GT2554r, GT2854r, GT2860-7, GT2560, GT2860-5, correct?

Say I were to get like the 2860-7 on a budget, and upgrade stuff later on. Which of the these mods NEEDS to have the motor pulled to install (and therefore should be done at the turbo replacement time): Rods, heads, cams, intake, TB, and whatever else I may later upgrade.

where are you driving in your city, a race track? you're driving a 2.7 liter motor. even without turbo's you should be able to get around fine(how do you think the 2.8 A4 guys do it?). imo, for any of my future turbo'd cars, i don't want the lag to be any shorter than ~3krpms(hopefully full boost by ~4krpms). it is how my car is pretty much setup now, and it's soooooo nice for daily driving and fuel economy. a lot better than the stock k03 setup's are

These fears of lag are almost like myths.. Who is referencing any real S4 with Gt28's?

The few cars with that turbo setup, from the data Ive seen, didnt seem to have any problem at all with lag...

so whats all this fear about lag? Where are you getting this from? Wheres the data that shows a problem with lag? Maybe I just havent seen it

I have driven RS4 with a GT2860RS turbos, and that was quite awful. It started to pull from 4500 rpm. Before that nobody was home.

I think that it could have perform better downpipes (those suck real bad), and the software could also be better.

Okkim, in all fairness, that GT set up was absolute crap. The downpipes were awful and the manifolds were stock with adapter plates that look like they were made with a chisel. I've seen a speedo video of the RS4 you're talking about and there are K04 cars that are way faster. With good tubular headers and downpipes, you will see a about 10 psi at 3500 RPMs and 1 bar at 4000 rpms with GT2860's. Once above 4000, boost ramp up is very fast. It's important to take into consideration that a GT2860 @ 1 bar makes more power than a K04 @ 1 bar.

...I'm uploading a video of lag check test of VAST's GT2860 S4, you can see RPM and PSI. Give it about a half hour or so and it'll be on youtube.

Re: Which GT turbo in my situ: GT2554, GT2845, or GT2560?

Do you guys realize theres almost 15 different GT28s with mulitply combinations on the turbine side and comp side? For example The gt2854 is the same as a gt2554 with a .8 larger exhaust wheel... To say I've been in a gt28 car is a pretty Vag statement seeings theres dozens of ways to go... For instances a gt2560 is actually a larger turbo then a gt2860-7. tuning can play a large roll in lower end performance also... i have a graph somewhere of a GT car plotted over a k04 car and the GT car made more power from 3000rpms on so lag wasn't a big issue

I can´t thank Okkim enough for setting my car up with a new pair of OEM K04s.
The car runs perfect with proper software and Okkim DPs etc..
Now that i saw that Lil is 300´s video, i start to think what would it be like, IF the GT set up was done p r o p e r l y in the first place. And again, it really wasn´t done by anyone i know!

K04's are just getting into full boost by 3400-3500 rpm... Like GenJDM mentioned, there are plenty of GT options out there. The GT2554R's will make more power than RS6 turbos and spool up sooner as well.

That video is GT2860's which are quite large. If you run those, you might as well build the heads and run a higher redline. But there are many choices with which GT's to go with.

Id love to go with a set of GT2554r's. Seems like they make great power down low, and don't have to rev that high to get the power. If i had the cash, id build a motor and rev to 8k and put on some biggers gts.

I'm a person that is totally against turbo lag. I like a linear powerband. I like cars with plenty of pull around town @ lower than 3000 rpm. That being said I agree with Jdm about it not being about at what point the turbo make full boost but how much power the turbo is providing at any given Rpm (i.e. psi). If a K04 is putting out say 8 psi @ 2500 rpm, and a GT is putting out 6 psi @ 2500 rpm, but the GT is still putting out MORE POWER at that point.... Well then I would definitley go with a set of GTs.

I think the words everyone is looking for are "boost threshhold" not lag. Lag is how long it takes to spool the turbo, Boost threshold is when BOOST hits, Im pretty sure that is what you guys have been saying, not being a wise-ass either :)

all the GT turbos have little to no lag, thats what you pay for, the ball bearings.

I just wish to say OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who butchered that setup in Alex's pics? The one side dp has a bend so tight it almost touches it self, no wonder why it didn't perform I can see a dozen reasons why and could image 3 dozen more reasons why without seeing the rest of the setup.haha

The world is my race track. I'm not looking to get around fine, I'm looking to get around fast. Screw a 2.8 A4 that's why I bought a S4. I'm not blowing all this money on this car to drive like my mom. The best part of the K03's is the instant power. If I wanted lag I would have kept my WRX.

Say I were to get like the 2860-7 on a budget, and upgrade stuff later on. Which of the these mods NEEDS to have the motor pulled to install (and therefore should be done at the turbo replacement time): Rods, heads, cams, intake, TB, and whatever else I may later upgrade.
bro, you're driving the wrong car, and trying for the WRONG set-up if you're worried mostly about the cost, doning a GT seried set-up on an S4 isn't anything close to economical. I know you want a smoking deal, but that just doesn't work with GT series. When you're all said and done with clutch, intercoolers you're going to be at $10,000. And from speaking with you, thats not what you want to spend. Might just want to look at a used rs4 set-up. You have to pull the motor to replace ANY turbos.
