St. Patty's Day Smack Down
So the girlfriend and I are on the way home from dinner tonight and what pulls up next to us but a first generation Camaro and it sounds super mean. There are two meat head looking dudes in the car and they look over at us and nail it. The car is really fast and I don't even try but I'm in the mood for some fun so I wait until we get to the next red light. Conditions are perfect, no one around us, the light turns green and we go. His car sounds like a freakin Pro Stocker, but right away I get the jump on him and pull at least 2 car lengths and stay there, until I shut it down as we begin to run out of road. I believe these things came from the factory with either a 327cid, 350cid, 396cid or a 427cid, and which ever of those he had, it was not stock. So after we humiliated these guys, they wanted to go again from a roll. Being that it is St. Patty's Day and the cops are out, no way was I going for it again. No point really since I already made it clear they should not be messing with S4's.

Maybe so, but this thing was clean and it looked like it had lots of work done to it. No way it was stock. Regardless, it was still fun to smack him!!

No way it was stock if it sounded "like a pro-stocker". could have been anything from a 302 to a 540 in that baby. But probably not geared for the motor. I just sold a 69 that would be a pretty even match for an S4 up to 60, then from there it would run away. That was a mild EFI 350 making ~375hp, and the car was a good 600lbs lighter than an S4 too. Way back when I had a '63 Impala that weighed about the same as a S4. But would wax it soundly from any speed up to it's top speed which was ~120. It hit 118mph in the 1/4 mi, compared to the S4 at maybe 104 just to give you an idea. Ran 11's. 4.56 gears and a 4000rpm stall converter so it pulled HARD off the line - yanked one tire up on slicks and ran 1.7x 60 foots which is hauling for a small block in that heavy of a car. 383 motor making 535hp. Solid roller cam, but not too big for the street - worked from 3500-7500rpm. That car was a monster. At 60 on the freeway in high gear it was pulling ~3500rpm. Punch it from there and it would get to 100 before you could even think. too much fun!!
Still - my S4 is a lot more pleasant to drive around in every day!!

no doubt...its always a good feeling.
i waxed a z28 in my A4...he was a low 12s guy. sounded like a monster beast. i was trying to video tape it....or my brother was. anyway...he had 335's out back....my a4 ran high 13s....his problem was still no traction...out of the hole....i nailed him by 3 cars....i see him run up to my door....and then he had to shift...and i didn't he drops back....lil more spin in 2nd gear from him...which just put him behind me.
now in reality....i would have lost at the drag strip....but on the street...that guys car was not setup right. he looked like a camaro ss and i asked him...he was just a modded Z28 with some serious tires...which is why i wanted to try to see what he can do. his car was just not setup for the street. what good is all that power if you can't put it down.

Yeah that's what I love about Quattro, it hooks up so nice (rain or shine) that you can usually get the hole shot even carrying the extra weight and win light to light. From a roll though, my encounter may have had a different outcome.

There are a lot of great looking Camaro's out there.
Some of you sound just as bad as the BMW guys who put Audi's down.

Re: St. Patty's Day Smack Down
Yup - 69 Camaro has to be one of the best looking cars ever made. Here is the one I just sold to a buddy of mine.
The S4 is way nicer to drive, however!! And doesn't look half bad either, IMHO.

That's a beautiful car and pretty much looks like the one I raced last night but that one had much wider rear tires. My favorite classic muscle car still has to be the 1970 SS Chevelle with the 396 (actually a 402).
