Approximate Time: 1 Hour
If your attempting this I hope you know where the TB is located, in case you dont, here it is
Step #1: Remove the electric sensor plug from the TB. It is a normal plug as one would find on the headlight. Insert a bladed screwdriver in the center of the clip, twist slightly until you here in click, then pull the plug off
Step #2: Remove the throttle body hose from the TB. You may need a bladed screwdriver or a socket if you have T-Bolt clamps. Remove clamp and pull TB hose out of the way
Step #3: Remove (4) 5mm Allen bolts from TB, there is one on each corner. After all 4 bolts are out, the TB should come out. Remove the old gasket from the TB (it should be stuck to the back of the TB) Be sure not to damage the gasket, keep it flat and remember its orientation on the TB if you plan to reuse it. If not you can replace it with a new one, Part # 028 129 748 (from your local VW or Audi dealer)
Heres what mine looked like prior to cleaning, 2 years of meth build up!
For cleaner you can use either Carb cleaner or I used CRC Brake Cleaner. Pretty much any quick drying solvent will work. I had the Brake Cleaner already so put it to use
Optional Step #1, Throttle Plate Removal for added cleaning: Using a T20 Torx screwdriver, you can remove the two screw shown here. (TP=Throttle Plate)
Remove the two T20 screws. You will then need to rotate the throttle plate so it is parallel with how the air would flow. It rotates only one direction so make sure you dont muscle it to move. Slight effort and it should rotate. Once you get it rotated, the throttle plate pushes out (only one direction, you can see the small bubble tabs on the bottom side of the throttle plate in the pic above) Once you slide the the TP out, the TB will rotate back to its "home" position.
BE SURE TO REFERENCE THE POSITION, SIDE, AND WHICH WAY THE THROTTLE PLATE COMES OUT!!!
To put the TP back in, I used a quarter to return the TB back to the position where the TP will slide back in. Put the quarter in the slot where the TP goes, itll give you leverage to push on to turn the TB. Hold the TB in the parallel to air flow position, slide the TP back in slightly. Once you get the TP in enough to hold the TB open, remove the quarter and push the TP all the way back.
I made sure that the TP was perfectly centered in the TB when putting it back in, it didnt appear to be when I took it out, figured it would possibly benefit from being centered.
After the TP is back in and centered, put the (2) T20 screws back in and tighten them down
After Cleaning
Step #4: After the throttle body cleaning is complete, reinstall in the car as it came out.
Optional Step #2, Intake Air Temperature Sensor Cleaning:
The IAT sensor is located just behind the the TB on the intake manifold
It has an electric plug just like that on the TB, remove it first. Then remove the 5mm Allen bolt holding it in. After the bolt is removed, carefully pull it out. Should look like this
After Cleaning
The IAT sensor seals with an O-Ring. Be sure it is not damaged before reinstalling. (I replaced it and used silicone grease on the oring for the heck of it)
Step #5: Throttle Body Alignment using Vagcom
Key in ignition in accessory position
Open Vagcom, and follow these tabs
Select Control Module -> Engine -> Basic Settings
There should be three blocks where you can enter a channel. In the first block enter 060 and click "Go"
Should display some information in the white blocks to the right.
Up at the top there should be a button which says "On/Off/Next"
Click on it once, should say "On" now. You should also now hear the throttle body making a slight whining noise, it is rotating the throttle plate and recentering itself. Should take about 30seconds
After it is complete, click the "On/Off/Next" tab again once, should say "Off"
Exit Vagcom
Start car, make sure idle is normal
Congrats, YOUR DONE!!
