yeah. super simple. and this way i can always go back and do more. not the other way around.. plus i like the chrome a little because of the wheels and i think it works well with the rest of the car.

Re: Blacked out headlights on C5 A6

Hey guys, I read through the thread but I didn't really see anyone ask the following question...

I love the way the original guide looks, as well as the other variations... My question regards the efficiency of the lights. I hate having non HID lights right now, and I would love to get them somehow at some point. Does the blacking out affect the quality of light produced by the headlamps?

    Thanks!

I want to paint mine pretty much the same way the original guide was written. I like the way it looks, and I just wanted to make sure my lighting wouldn't suffer since I don't have HID's. I'm also considering doing silver instead of black, cus my car is silver, but we'll see what I pick when I buy it...

    Thanks for the help

With the halogens, I don't think it should make much of a difference. If you're going to paint them silver, they'll have a much higher reflective effect than the black so I think you'll be fine! Let us know how it goes and post pictures when you're done! GOOD LUCK BRO!

no matter what color you paint them it will have no effect. almost all cars from 2009 and on will have black headlights. i've done this to two of my friends f150's 2 tacoma's my audi and my buddys b5 a4. if you look at the harly davidson edition f150 and the new 2009 tacoma's they will all come with black headlights. beamers have dine it for over a decade now.

awesome guys, thanks for the assistance. I went with high-gloss black, so we'll see how it turns out.

Pictures will probably come up tomorrow. I took my time sanding and I'll be spraying and sealing them back up tonight.

    thanks again!

you'd definitely do the ferrari-look. I think the headlights matching the car body color is extremely sexy. I just have a thing for black headlights though. =D

It'd definitely be unique and I honestly think it'd look really good!

Re: Blacked out headlights on C5 A6

Asix I saw your post here quite a while ago and decided almost instantly I wanted to do that. It took me a while, but I got it all done!

I ended up doing three projects in one - I sanded and polished my lights to freshen up the front lenses, I did the clear corners, and I painted the lights. I've got a full "write up" on audiworld (http://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/789262.phtml) but needless to say, I really love the way it turned out. I've only got one picture so far:

I just finished detailing my car and I'm going to go out at sunset to take some good photos, which I'll post up here right away.

Thanks for the great how-to you wrote up, it was a great guide to have at my side! and those damn "third" torx bolts for the lights are a PITA!

My "write up" on audiworld will load much faster now - I moved my image gallery hosting over to a real web host, rather than my linux machine in my basement

To be honest, I didn't think this was too terrible of a job. the hardest part for me was figuring out how to reinstall the lights! (Remove the air duct for easy access to the "third" torx bolt on the pass side, and you can reach it with some bendy elbows on the driver side.

I had to be pretty patient while masking off the lights, and I still messed that up and got some black paint on my chrome bits. I tried to fix that with silver metallic paint, but the paint dried grey :(

I could make my own little write up if you like, as I did a few things differently than Asix (but his guide was great!)

Here's a couple more images that I uploaded last night. I've got some more, but I'm working late and don't have access to them right now

I Think on a dark colored car it would look great! or maybe even color matching (if you have dark blue / green) ...

The thought of putting my lights in an oven scared me too - I can't afford to get new lights if I broke these ...

so since I just moved back home from college, I stole my mom's hair dryer and used that as my "heatgun" to slowly heat the silicon on the light housings. I just ran it back and forth over an area of the light (I started on the bottom of the light housing) and then pried a little bit open with a screwdriver ... heated that area more ... pulled with my fingers, heated a bit more, etc etc ... all the way until I could pull the lens off (pulled from the high-beam side towards the turn signal)

The silicon goop was so sticky that while I was pulling the lens cover off, sometimes the silicon would make cracking and popping noises as it was being pulled apart, and I thought I broke my lens ... but it was just the silicon!

As for the pics, I moved my image gallery over to some web hosting the other day (rather than hosting from my home on a crap cable connection!) so the images may not show up properly for everyone yet. Give it a day or two.

here's a few more I took down at the beach at sunset two days ago. Of course, I washed and waxed my car, and it rained the next day :(

Thanks again Asix, your guide gave me the confidence to try this out! If anyone else wants to try it out, don't be afraid to PM me on here and I'll try to help

Hey guys I'm getting ready to do my haedlights this weekend, and after seeing this thread I'm going to do mine like the original version. But for some of you guys I noticed that you used tape for taping your lights off, and from experience, a better solution that is less "sticky" is GLAD PRESS and SEAL WRAP, it works really well and you only have to press down a small area to seal it and you can trim with a razor accordingly...Here is how I did my jetta when I had it...(I used the GLAD)

Glad Wapped Up and first coat

    Finished

I'll post pics of the Audi when i'm done...

hey cerfus! try my DIY and you won't need to remove the bumper. It does get a LITTLE tricky trying to snake the headlight out of the hole, but once you figure out how to get it, it's REALLY easy to take out and put back in.

    Good luck!!!

well.. unlike the tint it doesn't get all hard and nasty after a while. the spray smooth things out and looks more slick... but to each their own.. some of us might have a OEM pair of head lights laying around...
