Calling former Honda owners
So my girls commuter car sounds like a locomotive when it accelerates, I'm assuming this is an exhaust leak, any advice to quick fix exhaust leaks, minimum cost need to be incurred because we are just quick fixing this till she gets her new car in Feb. Any advice on wraps or products used to seal holes would be appreciated. Ofcourse if this sound isn't an exhaust leak i'd like to know what your thoughts would be as well? But it definetely has a chug, chug, noise, locomotive like under acceleration.
P.S. yes i know its Audizine, but i'm sure around 50% of you came from honda's at some point.

Another Honda thread... I thought these cars were supposed to run solid until ~200k?

Re: Calling former Honda owners
What year is the car? And is it losing power? If its an exhaust leak you can either get the pipe fixed at a muffler shop, or patch it with a patch kit from schucks or something, but those suck to do. Getting a used exhaust from a junk yard is your best bet. If its losing power, check your plug wires, in one of my si's I burned through one of the spark plug wires, and ended up running down on 1 cylinder, and since I only had 4, it made a huge difference.

would check the plugs and see if it is miss firing... that has happened, or somehow timing is off?

Re: Calling former Honda owners
Alright, well i'm going to do the ghetto lift this weekend two wheels up on the curb and look underneath, but i'll also check out the plugs, as for getting it serviced, i don't want to waste the money on it, we are getting a new ride in a month or so, just want to quick fix the problem, i think we are going to donate the car or maybe give it to her uncle to regift to a cousin. Any other advice, Plugs and some exhaust schucks or whatever?

Ghetto lift?!?!?! LOLOL. Never heard of that before. Sounds like exhaust leak but could be anything from your description.

Re: Calling former Honda owners
this doesnt sound like a "honda" problem... there are no details other than its a honda and makes a "chug chug chug" sound.
which honda is this? more specifically, which engine?
like the others have suggested, check the sparkplugs and exhaust piping/muffler.

hmm...if you say so.
without seeing anything, it sounds like there a hole in the exhaust. that can make any car sound like a tugboat.

Re: Calling former Honda owners
Alright the beast stats are:
1998 Honda Civic LX Sedan
Bone Stock, busted tape deck
whatever that base engine is 1.6L or 1.8L (no turbo)
Automatic
Do civics have issues with the seals up where the headers are or more likely rust holes or from corrosion forming?
You've never seen a ghetto lift performed, drive one side of the car up on the curb so its angled, gives a little clearance to crawl underneath and still manuever.

Re: Calling former Honda owners
is it just loud on accel? or all the time? check the O2 sensor too, my bung popped off and had to be rewelded back in 89!

stock 1.6L D16 engine. crap. but awesome gas mileage. LOL
anyway, the occurrences of the exhaust leaking from where the header meets the head is RARE... rare as in i personally have never heard of it happening in person or even online, but i cant really say its 100% impossible. maybe theres a hole somewhere in the exhaust piping? maybe the exhaust is a little bit loose from where it connects to the cat? or maybe its a bad sparkplug/spark? have u got a chance to check the plugs yet? thats the easiest thing to check. does the car make the sound even when its parked and u just rev the engine?

I have this same problem on acceleration only. Engine runs like a charm. I just have this chugging train sound noticeable after 30 MPH or so. Stops immediately when I take foot off gas pedal. Very distinct low chug that doesn't feel like it's engine related. It's under me and towards the left front. Most people cannot hear it but I sure do and for three months w/o change. May be slightly louder. I'm thinking tranny bearings or axle? But would the noise stop on coasting with those? Thanks y'all
