The mayhem begins: My airride build thread.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well, I was going to wait until I had the car torn apart to start this, but since I let the cat out of the bag and inadvertantly jacked sixty40band's thread, I guess I'll just start it now.

The plan: have the first airbagged B6 on this side of the pond. There's a few of them in Europe, but I've never seen or heard of one in the US so I'm stepping up to the plate.

I know a lot of people don't agree with my styling concepts or ideas, but that's the beauty of living in America: I can tell you all to shut your big dumb face because it's MY damn car! As a lot of you know, I'm originally from the Volkswagen scene and I love the "Euro" look, especially what's going on in the mkIV Golf/Jetta scene right now. I'm also heavily influenced by the minitruck scene, so I'm sure you'll see a little bit of that as the car progresses as well.

"But why do this to an A4!?!" you ask? As I've said from the beginning, the B6 is a fat bloated (but luxuriously comfortable, well-optioned and fairly reliable ) pig so I have no intention of making my car fast. Personally, I think people are wasting their time making these things fast. If I wanted a fast car, I'd get another Mitsubishi Eclipse, and put 400hp at the wheels and run 11's all day for half of what some of you have into your cars in order to barely scrape 12's in the quarter. I also drive my car everywhere (20k+ miles a year) and I live in Seattle which has some of the worst traffic in the country so it'd be kinda pointless to have a 350hp car when the fastest I ever get to go in it is 20mph. With that said, I'm sure you can at least understand where I'm coming from even if you don't agree with me.

Now, on to the handling issue: This car will handle as well as--IF NOT BETTER THAN--75% of the cars on this forum once I have everything dialed in and set up properly. With that said, handling isn't really my goal either, but if I want to do a little "spirited" driving, I won't feel like I'm driving a 30 year old Cadillac.

And before we get into the actual nitty gritty of this, a look back at my car's various stages thus far:

My favorite stage so far (99% of this is because of the stance with the HRE's that I foolishly sold):

    In between:

    The most recent look:

Currently, the car is on stock (non-sport) suspension with some super sweet stock 16" wheels and looks like a friggin' Allroad.

And for those of you wondering what the car will look when I'm done or what the hell I'm talking about, here are a few cars that have been a major source of inspiration for me:

Over the next coming weeks (months? ), I'll be updating this with my progress as I do everything from wire and install the air management systems, mount everything in the trunk, run the airlines, fabricate the bag mounts, install the bags, and bash my head against the wall as I work out all the kinks.

At this point, I have all the parts I need to get started either a) sitting in my garage or b) en route in the capable hands of the US Postal Service. Currently the only thing I'm missing to get started tearing everything apart is FREE TIME.

I'll be updating this thread regularly, so stay tuned for updates!

Haha, no tweed, I like my leather interior. Maybe a little more Burberry, but we'll see.

As for wheels, I'm not sure yet, I'm still working on that aspect. All I know is that I'm definitely going back to 18's.

You have some Burberry in there now? Lol I guess I can see that looking good if you had the "tan" interior. 18" Porsche Turbo wheels are always hot... J-line or HRE's again would be goregous....

If I ever pull up behind you at a stop light and you're cars leaning sideways cause you jacked up one side I promise to mock you endlessly! (Sorry, saw a blazer like that on the freeway a couple weeks ago and my girl almost pee'd she was laughing so hard!)

hey, that loooks sik... You know I'm a minitrucker and have a huge project s10 on full airride.... If you want to that its rather easy... The air cylinders are gonna run you about 1,800, then you just need about 400 in other parts. a company caled AVS can make them for you to any length for that price. I think there site is airbagparts.com

If you have any other questions let me know, this is my 4th airride setup I'm building now.

Yes, I have some ideas for the new wheels, but I'm waiting a few weeks before I pull the trigger.

I'm up for a promotion/hefty raise at work and if I get it, it will open the doors to a whole new world of rediculous wheels for me.

Cylinders are still used on a lot of Honda's and stuff where fitment is tight. They just don't have nearly the quality of ride that bags do, so most people avoid them whenever possible.

Makes sense. Good luck, I'll definitely be watching this.

This is awesome since I have joined I have seen all my ideas actually come to action. This has been one of them for 6 months now Im glad I dont have to wait 2 years for me to actually do it myself. Can you just go head and paint your car white with a black roof so I can see what it would look like on mine???? lol

    serious captain.
im pretty sure our minds our on the same wave length.
born to the car scene on minis, super into euro mkIVs, and open to the fact that b6's are slow as dirt and making them fast is a waste.

move to the east coast, lets hang. hahahhaha

no but seriously, id really like to see (if you're willing to disclose) some pics of how you end up doing the bag mounts. i know this is going to be no walk in the park after we looked into bagging an A6. you planning on doing a macpherson style strut/bag in the front and bags in the rear?

best of luck, and go team amulet B6!!!!!!!!!!
    meh.

Not my cup of tea because I am a sheep with RS4 reps and USP front (it's not so Ba..aa..AAA..aaad)....
But nonetheless I appreciate the work put in to it, and think I'd love it on your car. But I wouldn't want it for mine.
Rock on though; it is nice to see someone be different.

hate to say it, but i don't think you're the first one Darrick.

there's a pink b6 with a chopped/ragged top with chrome wheels floating around. i remember watching that monstrosity on a clip on speedtv or something.

i will, however, admit, that you're the first one to have it on the boards, and in this community, that's all that matters
