Re: For those with bad instrument cluster displays....
Does anybody else think it's a real stretch trying to make a case for this being a recall due to "safety concerns?" The only possible potential "safety concern" is the safety of your engine, not your well being! And even saying it's a safety concern for your engine is still a stretch since any serious warnings displayed on the cluster are also accompanied by a loud audible alert. So in other words, even if your LCD screen was so faded that you couldn't see the visual alert, you would still hear the loud beeps and know to turn the car off right away.
Re: For those with bad instrument cluster displays....
Doesn't the display also warn you when the temp gets low enough for freezing or something?...it almost doesn't matter - they say it's safety information themselves...no?

Sure it does, but is an outside temperature reading something that will affect your well being during driving or in a crash? A lot of cars are built without such a reading, so I don't think you'd have much of a case there either when trying to convince the NHTSA of "safety concerns."
Somebody said this was made a RECALL (not TSB) in Europe or the UK? Anyone have a link to that?

Did you search for this or what? About one year ago this was created.

Wow this is an old thread! Has any progress been made? And as far as safety goes doesn't the instrument cluster display things such as if your brake pads need to be replaced? Sure it gives a beep but if your cluster isn't working you can't see what the beep is for, could be brake pads, could be windsheild washer fluid is low haha
Re: For those with bad instrument cluster displays....
Hey i have the same problem. I dont think audi is going to recall this due to safety issues if anything maybe becuase they get annoyed of all the complaints. Until then is there an easier fix to this?
Re: For those with bad instrument cluster displays....
I think DXC on Audiworld, hes on here too is selling replacements for 100 dollars, you have to crack open your cluster and solder it in. He offers to solder it in but you have to send the cluster to him...

how about when it says your brake light isn't working or if your headlights aren't working or even when your brake pads are worn...this is safety to you and others on the road as well....think before you speak...just call and get yourself a new cluster for free

Um...when your brakes don't work, you DON'T need the cluster to tell you that. Even before this point, you can generally tell/hear when you need new brakes. If your headlights aren't working and you can't tell they're on, you shouldn't be driving behind a vehicle in the first place. Same with oil levels, and gas levels, no need for an LED screen to tell you "BEEEP! You need....", there are guages already in place for that. All the preventative maintenance stuff you should be already doing on a weekly/bi-weekly basis (ie, oil check, brake fluid check, coolant check, etc.)
Honestly, a "bad" instrument cluster does not have enough "sufficient" proof that its a "safety" concern, I think its more of a distraction.

your whole statement is completely bias and false..you talk as though everyone driving an s4 or audi or any car for that matter has any car common sense or car knowledge, the sad reality is A LOT of people dont even come close to having an idea about whats going on with their car..trust me from expierience, working in a garage for 2 years, ive dealt with people that were just f*in oblivious..ESPECIALLY wen it comes to girls, they use park reverse drive and radio thats it..ive had people come in telling me their car makes a squeak noise, meanwhile the pads were so worn the rotors got destroyed..one girl came in and said "my dad keeps bugging me to change my oil" i asked how long has it been since her last oil change, she didnt know, checked the sticker..8700 miles over on non synthetic oil! and i have a whole world of horror stories just ask ANYONE who works in a garage..
so dont dumb down the fact that there are gauges for our cars and we should generally be able to tell if something is wrong cuz like i sed the sad part is there are way more people that would just ignore the beeps and flashing lights then those who would do sumthing about it, especially if there pixels are broke and they cant read what the actual warning is...and last..if my pixels were broke..and a brake light was out..i dont have sum1 stand behind my car everytime i start it and let me know the brake lights are working, and neither do you..and last i checked my friend got 110 dollar ticket for it..so if a free recall for my pixels takes a phone call..and raises the value of my car...and gives me the luxury i paid for, im gunna do everything i can to keep it that way..

Decided to bump this thread again :-p
My clustter on my 2001.5 S4 has been going for a while now and I wasn't able to read a damn thing on it. I found a guy that could get the new LCD in bulk for about 95$ apeice and he would do the repair and send it back to you for another 80$. Not sure how this price relates to other repair options out there tho but its an option if ur like me and the center display doesn't do a god damn thing.

"Hello Everyone,
Its been a while since I sent an update about the status of the Audi/VW MID Instrument Cluster LCD fix that I have been working on so I thought I'd send out an email.
Progress has been made and the installs I have completed so far have been very successful. Currently I am accepting repair requests from anyone, not just limited to the original waiting list.
The repair cost is $175 which includes the new LCD screen and all related parts and labor involved with installing it. Shipping is extra and any courier you choose is fine with me.
Also, I am planning on sending in a new order of parts to the manufacturer this month and am trying to get an idea of how many I should order. Please only tell me if you are serious about getting the repair done or buying a panel.
This repair applies to all A4 B5 1998-2001, S4 B5 2000-2002, A6 C5 2000-2002(?),a few TTs and VW B5 Passat.
Cost of buying a LCD panel alone will be $97.50 with shipping included to the USA. International orders extra. (Price may change after next order based on manufacturer's production costs)

Mine is in the mail coming back to me and should be here any day. I'll let you know when I get it back. I didn't use one of his displays, I bought my own thinking my dad (an electrical engineer) could put it in but he said he would need some specialized equipment to do it. He suggested letting someone with experience for this particular application and the correct equipment to do it. So I just paid Greg to do it. I got my display from www.tachopix.de a german company. It was twice as expensive as the ones he has, I found out after the fact, but from what I read they are the closest to the factory displays (without the losing lines issue) you can get.
